Check in was easy and instructions on how to access rooms and the building were thorough and clear. Staff was very polite and kept areas clean. Check out was easy process. As a hostel, its amenities were enough and more as far as availability of clean linen, bathrooms and showers, and kitchen. Great location - relatively quiet.

The thing that I missed the most was the ability to control the room temperature other than opening/closing the window since it had a heater but didn't have an ac. Otherwise, everything was really good, even the shared bathroom.

I love this place. 2nd time staying here. Very clean and in a great location. Very close to many hot spots on the city. The price is great for what you get. The bathrooms are shared, but I never had to wait to use it. I will say that there is no elevators in the building, so if you are not staying on the first floor you have to use the stairs. Not a huge deal as it keeps you in shape, just like the walking in the city does! For parking we used the Madison Square garden garage, as it is just 2 blocks away.

Great Manhattan spot if you’re looking for somewhere affordable and easy access to the subway!!! Double bed room was small for 2 people but it was a comfortable bed and air/heat was effective. Never had issues waiting for shared bathroom as there were multiple bathrooms on every floor. Five floors and stairs are narrow so not very accessible but that’s the case with most older buildings. Walls are thin so expect to hear people moving about, but again, if you’re looking for a safe and affordable option for staying in Manhattan that has easy transportation, it checked all of those boxes which worked for us! Tina at the front desk was a delight and the other staff I interacted with in passing were kind and courteous.

Pros: Great location, secure building and rooms, and friendly staff. Note: This is a hostel so you get to share a bathroom with 4 other rooms per floor.

I don't generally stay in hostels and didn't expect that much, and so wasn't that disappointed. The bathrooms were fine, although having soap consistently would be nice. The bedroom was very small and kind of worn, which gets to the main issue - $280/night for this?? That's highway robbery, no matter what the market will bare. I made the reservation very late, because of a flight cancellation, and I don't know if they engage in some sort of dynamic pricing scheme, but I had just stayed in Williamsburg in a Pod hotel which was MUCH nicer for the same price.

I stayed here for four nights on a solo trip. I have stayed in hostels before, so I knew what to expect in the way of smaller, shared accommodations. Arrived late in the evening and the desk attendant was friendly and knowledgeable. I was helped upstairs with my bag(s) and shown around on the floor where I would be staying. My room was clean and had its own window unit AC that kept the room cool. Room was about the size you would expect for a hostel but did have a full-length mirror and an armoire in which to hang clothes, which was helpful. Each floor has two restrooms, both good sized with full showers; very clean and well maintained. I never had to wait to use the restroom and was never interrupted by other guests rushing me when I was showering, etc., but obviously that may not be the case during peak travel times of the year. I chose this hostel due to close proximity to Madison Square Garden, just a short walk away. Plenty of nearby restaurants and bars, walkable to Penn Station and subway. Check out was just as easy as check in, with same attendant. Everything here met or exceeded my expectations. Please make sure you research what exactly hostel accommodations are like because they truly are meant for solo travelers who don’t plan to spend much time in rooms other than sleeping and showering, and the room sizes reflect this. My only complaint was lag in WiFi when on Zoom meetings for work, but connection was fine for phone calls and general internet use.

This place is fine if you have a short trip. It's a central location the staff seemed nice. The room and shared bathroom were adequate. It's not pristine clean but not bad like you will see some dust and dirt at the corners of the room and it looked like a small stain on my sheets but no big deal to me.

I was in NY for 2 nights on my own and the Lamartine Chelsea was perfect. I was there for a concert at MSG and it was only an 8 minute walk. Times Square was also in walking distance. I felt safe and my room and all the facilities were clean.

First stay in a hostel and everything was better than expected. The room and facilities were all clean and comfortable.
The 5 stars do come with one note. If your room is on the first floor expect to hear everything the overnight desk attendant does. Everything from talking on the phone, doing what sounded like sorting screws or games on their unmuted phone, it will be heard.

I don't recommend this place anybody. The rooms are very small. The bed was very bad, I stayed 3 nights and had huge pain on my back. The room was so dirty, lot of dust, marks on the wall, horrible. You can hear everything from the hallway and neighbors and lot of noise from outside. I found tiny bugs from my bed. There are 2 bathrooms per floor and there is nothing to clean the bathroom so after taking shower, bathrooms are dirty. Area has lot of homeless, unsafe.

Great Economical Place to stay while visiting NYC

Lamartine Chelsea is in a great location, close to Times Square, Broadway, The High Line, and so on. It's a great price for the city. Nothing fancy but it's clean and comfortable. We don't spend much time in our room when we go to New York so it was just a place to sleep and clean up. Fantastic spot if that is what you are looking for. Check in was smooth and they let us leave our bags there after check out until we were ready to head home.

The room was very nicely decorated and a lot larger than we anticipated! For a hostel, we were impressed by the security codes specific to each guest for both the front door and your private room door. I will say there was a random sock when we entered our room, which made me question whether the room had been cleaned, but sheets and towels seemed clean to us! The kitchens were very nice and equipped with everything you may need. Our only qualm was that the restroom on our floor (5th) seemed to have a malfunctioning toilet. Remnants were often visible it the toilet bowl so we had to go to the fourth floor to use the restroom. Overall, for the price in NYC, a very comfortable and convenient location. There was a mix of perfumey/smoke smells, as to be expected when sharing common areas. As someone who has stayed in many hostels, I do think majority of the negative reviews were people expecting hotel like conditions. For a hostel, I would say this place is nice.

Honestly pretty good, the property was kept well cleaned and warm as I visited through winter. The room was nice, furniture was a little old and creaky but nothing bad and nothing was broken. My mattress was a little sunken but wasn’t noticeable unless I sat in the specific spot. The bathroom ammenities were useable, only had an issue with another guest who left stuff in the toilet sometimes. Only complaint was a dripping sound made usually during the night, drove me a little crazy but i survived. Overall a good stay, check in and check out were super easy! Is in a super convenient location, close to Madison Square Garden and Penn Station for transport. Had no issues with anything directly outside the property even in the middle of the night. Property security is good too, with electronic codes for front and personal doors. Pretty happy with my stay, and was good for solo travelling without having to pay too much!

Incredible! Room did smell fainltly of cigarettes.

Just amazing. The only problem was that even though smoking is not allowed, the room did smell slightly of very old cigarette smoke. I just kept the window a bit for fresh air and the smell went away. The room was a 4th floor walkup, w/ narrow steep high stairs. Real wood floors, high ceilings, very old, gorgeous, awesome. Person who worked there so helpful when I needed help with a few things, immediately came up to help. Great neighborhood. Nice kitchens+bathroom w/ hot shower. So impressed! Thank you so much!

This was our first stay here. We lucked out and had a room on the first floor next to the shared bathroom. The shared bathroom was clean and never had an issue with it being occupied when needed. There are no extra towels to put on the floor in the bathroom, so when you get out of the shower it can be slippery. Also no shelf in the shower to put shampoo or soap on. The overall experience was great. You are within walking distance to a lot of NYC attractions. There is a parking garage 2 blocks down. Close to a subway entrance. No pool or work out area. The price was good. Would stay at again.

Overall, my stay here met my expectations for what staying at a hostel and sharing space with other guests would be like. Your mileage may vary based on who else is also a guest at the time, with regards to noise levels and cleanliness of shared bathrooms, but I had a great stay. I came into town for work and knew I wouldn't be spending a ton of time in a bedroom, so the space and ease of access exactly fit my needs. I'd stay here again if I get another opportunity to visit NYC!

The person that greeted us at our arrival was very helpful and provided us with all of the required information promptly. The common areas and bathrooms were very clean contrary to our room (3E) which had spider webs hanging from the ceiling, carpet was stained, walls need a fresh cleaning and probably a new coat of paint. First i'm a former NY resident so my comfort level in the city may differ from yours. That said, this is a repurposed apartment building into individual hostel-like units great for single travelers, relatively quiet and walkable to the metro and theater area.

The Bad: The check-in, for crying out loud. I waited an hour with two other fellow travellers for someone to appear to check us in. From reviews, this seems to be common. The maddening thing is given the codes used to enter the hostel and your room, this is an easy fix.

To the Lamartine: Fix it stat. All you have to do is send the code to the room to the guest and tell them the front door code is their phone number. Instead each night I found stranded travelers scratching their head on how to check in.

This property is close to Penn Station, which was important for my trip. There are several restaurants and convenience stores in the area. The rooms are plain but functional. I was really nervous about what the state of the bathrooms would be like but I was pleasantly surprised that the amenities were actually pretty clean. On the last day of my stay the bathroom was covered in water and really dirty however so I think it’s the luck of the draw with whoever else is staying in the hostel.

The hostel is pretty safe. You need a 4 digit code to get into the building then a four digit code for your room as well. The area is relatively safe, it is still NY though.

It’s about a 7-10 minute walk to get to a strip of cafes and restaurants which is nice.

Overall this was a really good stay. Reasonably priced and relatively safe.
