It is way too big. If you go with a group, they might just move you to any of the 6 or so properties- and they don’t care that you’ll then need to walk 2 miles to your friends area.
They didn’t give us our “a-la-cart” reservations so we had to eat the horrible buffet food all the time.
We had 6 people -a friend and I each booked ourselves and 2-18 year old girls. Then we wanted to have her and I in one room and the girls in another- in their view that was absolutely NOT POSSIBLE- no idea why??? We all paid and they allow 4 per room??? What’s the problem???
If you swap wrist bands and they find out they’ll call you everyday and threaten you!

the room was ok...the one bed had dirt on it but sheets were clean. Very damp. Our refrigerator didn't work so my medication was ruined. The resort was pleasant enough, just not a lot of \"bang' for your buck.

We had a good time at the resort overall, especially when it came to relaxing by the water. The property is very large, with plenty of space to swim in the pools or ocean and lots of room to lounge by the beach or poolside. The beach itself was excellent; the water was crystal clear and we were able to see plenty of fish very close to shore, which made swimming there a highlight of our stay. There is no shortage of activities, with options like tennis, pickleball, a bowling alley, go-karting, and a casino, and we also enjoyed the nightly live shows at the theater. On the downside, the whole property felt somewhat dated, especially the rooms. Even though the beds were advertised as queen size, our room had two twin beds, and when we requested a king, the only option offered was a ground-floor room, despite having paid for a superior category. Service around restaurant reservations was also frustrating: there was only one person handling bookings for the à la carte restaurants, which led to a very long line, and by the time it was our turn, there were no spots left for any night of our stay. The buffet food was very mediocre; over four days, not a single dish stood out or felt memorable. If your priority is simply to relax at a beautiful beach and enjoy the pools and you are not too concerned about food quality, you will likely not be disappointed here.

Issues with the smell of the washroom of the lobby smelled like throw up.
No proper first aid kit and no one to communicate with due to language barrier.

The landscape and the beach are excellent.

Stayed Dec 21–29 and had an awesome week. Room was cleaned well every day and the whole place is super tidy. The beach is gorgeous - soft sand, clear water - and we ended up walking a ton because the resort is big but easy to get around. Pools were clean and never felt packed; plenty of chairs and a fun swim-up bar. Staff were friendly everywhere (check-in, restaurants, housekeeping). Lots of food options and the bar was well-stocked - good wine and solid spirits, not just the basics. We felt safe on the property and beach the whole time. Only heads-up: it’s a large complex, so expect some walking. Overall, excellent stay and great value -would happily come back :-)

The only real negative that will stop us from ever returning in the process of booking dinner reservations.
We stayed at the Maya Tropically a year ago and this Christmas at Maya Colonial .
Unless you are premium level the reservations are non existent and very hard to get us you want 9:30pm every night. Holding back
Reservations for VIP guests is a very poor decision as many visitor like ourselves will not return. I will be writing an email to management in the Barceló corporation to discuss our dissatisfaction. Everyone just apologized but no one ever tried to help. We visit Mexico from Isla Mujieres to Tulum multiple times a year. There is other resort that we have visited that has such a short coming as Barcelo for booking dinner reservations. This is very unfortunate situation for the Barcelo chain to have these concerns.This needs immediate correction for guests

Beautiful resort with an abundance of activities that go into the late nights so you won't get bored. The beach was stunning, the pools were amazing, buffet and bar foods were suprisingly more than average. I've been at other all inclusive hotels and usually buffet is nothing special. Even the special restaurants were top notch food and didn't taste like the same stuff you'd get from the standard buffet, which sometimes they are from other hotels. So why the 2 stars dropped? Customer service and rooms. The hospitality and friendly demeanor is just not there. Not all, as I encountered some great staff, but sadly there were more lacking with that work ethic. The rooms are not well kept. Faucets, sinks and p-traps leak, the drains overflow, the vents are caught with dust, coverings on chairs and some paint peeling off, the tv is working but damaged screens. We had a major leak in our original room that was pouring out black mold and requested to move. The next room we moved into was cleaner and slightly more maintained. So it seems, this is random and we just had the unfortunate case of getting a bad room. TV still had damaged screen and the sink leaked at the edges. We were just careful not to let the water reach the overflow. So be prepared to get some hiccups and simply ask to move. We atleast did not receive any pushback from the concierge and our request was granted.

Our room was damp and moldy. We eventually got them to give us a better room for the last two nights of our stay. The sunrises were spectacular, the beach was wonderful. The food was descent. Booking anything with the hotel staff was challenging, everything took very long. I won’t go back there.

The rooms are too loud. It was around 1am and you can hear people outside our room talking loud and the room above us, we would constantly hear what sounded like a chair dragging on the floor.
We arrived early and they didn’t try to accommodate an early check in. They just said we had to wait. So we waited and at 3pm, check in time, they said the room was still not ready. You would think that since they know we are there early our room would have been one of the first taken care of. After telling them, it was our 5th time being at the resort, you would think they would be thankful and even give you some sort of upgrade. But they don’t really care.
The food at the buffets was okay, and the food at the grills was not the best. But the restaurants food was really good.

The rooms at this property have a bad odor, probably a combination of the high humidity and the resort itself is surrounded by trees, making it very damp. I think the Colonial might be the oldest in the group. The food had much to be desired, oddly the best meal I had was creating my own hamburger. The beach and pool areas where amazing. This resort is one of several on the same property, the Palace or Riviera might have been a better choice. This changed my option of an all inclusive resort, I think it might be better to choose a non-inclusive resort and have more control over what you can eat, the quality of the food, and the atmosphere. There isn't anything close to the resort so you would have to travel to get to other restaurants, bars, entertainment, etc. You do have the option to go to the other resorts on the property for some things, but we found it was more of the same. TIP: the surf is a bit rocky so either find a good spot or bring water shoes.

Got bumped from the hotel I booked \"colonial\" to another hotel inside the same resort \"beach\" without any warning ahead of time. Also, no clear policy on how rooms get assigned, we arrived very early in the morning so even in the case of overbooking which is the hotel's fault, I should have had priority. The food and entertainment at beach was clearly inferior than colonial. The room itself was ok with some issues with the shower head but the cleaning staff are excellent. The only bright spot in the check in experience is that the \"beach\" hotel reception let us check in early

Wonderful resort for a family vacation! The staff was friendly and helpful, the rooms were current and clean, and the buffet had a great selection for adults and kids.

The pools were well-maintained, and not too cold! Swimming with the turtles daily was a huge highlight.

The resort is also close to several cenotes that you can visit.

Many amenities to keep kids entertained, plus the great beach, will have us coming back.

First of all I have stayed here twice before and others Barcelo resorts. Always had a great experience. This time I arrived went to Barcelo Colonial and was informed at the desk I had been moved to Barcelo Beach. I was never even sent a email or called. I was given a ride to Barcelo Beach. There I checked in and was given my room number and key but couldn’t check in till 3. I waited two hours got rained on went to the room at 3 and couldn’t get in. The household staff was friendly and tried to help by letting me in. The room was occupied. I went down to the desk and got a manager to help me get a room. She passed me off to someone else by this time I was not at all please. The lady was nice enough and upgraded me to premium without the premium room. The trip was unsatisfactory to say the least. Won’t stay here again. Think twice before you do.

Always is a good time to stay there and enjoy all the beautiful landscapes, endless pool the bar and the excellent service, also you can visit three more Barcelo's around in the property and walk all along in the property to exercise or just to enjoy the sea.
The gym there is huge, the food is excellent.
The only thing I didn't like is the rocks in the beach you have to wear water shoes.
This is my four time that I stay there, three times in \"
Barcelo riviera Maya and one Barcelo Maya Colonial.

Staff were friendly. The gym didn’t have much to offer. Our door lock/ key reader stopped working the second day and took a while to fix. My only real complaint was the food hours. Dinning didn’t open until 7am, which also meant no coffee until 7am, which is a problem when we wake up at 5, and some days had activities picking us up by 630. The grounds and pool were nice.

The property is so big that it never feels crowded. There are plenty of chairs around the pools and the beach with sun and/or shade. We had close proximity to 2 pool bars and 2 beach restaurants/grills. The kids play area is wonderful as well. My one complaint is how loud the theater is! The shows starts at 9:00pm and run til around 10:30 or 11:00pm every night. It's so loud you cant understand the words to the music - it's so distorted. And, we went to bed early each night but couldn't fall sleep unless we used earplugs. We only attended one show and it was so loud we left after 20 minutes because we had to keep plugging our ears.

Clean room and resort overall, so many activities to do. Bowling, large interactive games, go carts, surfing, wind sailing, kayaking, mini golf are just some of the free activities this resort offers. We went diving and jet skiing also. Excellent staff very helpful with any issues. The food at the buffet was good overall except the breakfast it always seemed a little cold. We ate dinner at the steak house, Italian and Brazilian, all were excellent food and service.

The customer service is bad not welcoming and don’t do what u ask for, for an example I needed extra towels or a pack of coffee, it never came. There are two buffets, we still had to wait in a long line to get a table. They don’t explain anything and the resort is not clean and needs serious renovations! We had leakage in the room and they didn’t change our room until we complained the next day again. U pay for premium level but u get zero benefits! Not going back again! Waste of money and time!

Everything was beautiful and enjoyable. The buffets need more variety of food especially the ones by the pools! The bedroom shower tubs need to be taken off! There are alit of older people at these resorts now that can't get in those tubs! I had a handicapped person and slipped quite a few times times and are too high to get in! Resort needs more lights outside at night n better guide signs. I was got lost all the time there because of no signs in so many areas!

This property was very nice but it was clear after the first couple of days that it was an older property. The staff were very friendly and helpful as possible with the language barrier lol. One improvement that could be made was the quality of the food smh. It wasn't what I expected unfortunately and my wife and I were often left hungry at night. Other than that it was a great time, the beaches were clean (besides sargassum) please bring a pair of aqua shoes for the beach as there are rocks all over in the water.

Overall the property is well kept , we had issues with our room the first night. Issues were taken care of right away, after we made them aware of it. The food is ok, not great . Most of it looks good , but very bland . To get a dine in restaurant , you must reserve in advance .Some restaurants weren’t available during our stay . Food at the restaurants we did eat , were ok. The pool area is great, with a really cool kids area ! The beach area is great! There are 2 swim up bars . Theres very few wait staff for such a big bar area . Theres a shopping center with a sports bar . That bar has 24hr snack Buffet. The beach doesn’t have drink service either . Keep in mind there are other properties attached , but we only stayed at the Colonial. Also the property is one hour 25 minutes from the airport . Keep that in mind if you don’t like to be late .

Poor food quality in the buffet style restaurants. Always cold and poor taste. Room service took 2 plus hours and one time didn’t even show up.
We booked premium option and that allowed us to attend a la carte restaurants, but not option to choose which ones we wanted to go. The food was acceptable but again? Good and lacks taste. Italian was our best experience in service and food quality.
We stayed for 4 days and is okay for the price. Will not return.

It was a large and beautiful property. Everything is perfect about this resort. The seaweed is very bad right now. So the beach is not too enjoyable. The landscaping is very nice! The beds and pillows were comfortable. The food was just okay. It’s pretty much the same stuff everyday with no flavor. But that’s at all resorts. The only thing we had issues with is the staff. No one seemed to be happy doing their job. You ask for something and they make faces, they act like you are bothering them. And, it wasn’t just one or two. It was at every meal we went to. And, we are tippers for everything. But the way they would respond, and have attitude. Made us not want to tip. So that’s definitely something mgmt needs to work on. The employees. I asked for two clean towels. The woman smacked her teeth and basically threw them at me. But other than that. Everything was great!

What a fantastic stay we had at the Barcelo Maya Colonial! We were so impressed by the quick and prompt support we received whenever we needed assistance. When our room had a minor leak, or we needed extra towels, or even a replacement remote control for the TV, the staff responded almost instantly and resolved everything with a smile. It truly made a difference and allowed us to relax without any worries.

The premium staff went above and beyond, making our vacation truly seamless. Booking spa services and securing restaurant reservations was handled with such ease and professionalism. Their friendly and attentive nature made every interaction a pleasure.

We wholeheartedly recommend the Barcelo Maya Colonial for both families and couples. The resort offers endless activities, incredible shows, and a fantastic variety of cuisines that will satisfy every palate. We can't wait to return to this wonderful hotel!

The rooms need to be updated. From the ventilation system to the decor. Our sheets felt damp every night. We tried to change the AC temp and everything nothing worked. After we checked we were told to go guest services to schedule our dinners. But guest services never told us what other amenities were offered to us. We upgraded to premium and again no one told what extra amenities that were offered to us. Fortunately for us we met a random guest that taught what we get. They showed us some of the amenities and where the premium guest services office was at. I wish the customer service was better. Overall the resort and all the resorts were absolutely beautiful. The services at the bars and restaurants was awesome as well. Customers is not good at all.

Overall this is a fabulous place to stay. Great value and so beautiful. Only bad thing is the poor dolphin’s that they still have on their property. No shade, tiny pool for four dolphins. They are no longer allowed to hold performances, but the dolphins continue to suffer. Will not return to any Barcelo property until these beautiful animals are rescued.
