Not quite ready for prime time. We had premium rooms and thus the special check in and concierge. Difficult to communicate with over email prior to arrival and no better in person. One day the gym was FILTHY! No towels, no water, no wipes, HOT. No one had checked in for hours. Concierge seemed confused about issue. Making dinner reservations with her was painful. Excellent yoga program. Food at reservation only restaurants is good. Buffet etc mediocre. Breakfast was a sh*! show—tons of staff there, many idling together and chatting and nearly a full contact sport to get coffee, water and a place setting. Buffet staff are an organizational disaster. Grounds are nice. Rooms large and nice. Maid service spotty. No one seemed to notice a drawer in my room had completely come off. So some nice things but you likely can do better for the price.

Had a wonderful time here at Akumal Bay! Beautiful view from our oceanfront room and the staff were lovely. It really did feel like a peaceful retreat compared to other AI’s. Everything was clean and the food was good.
Unfortunately, there was a lot of seaweed. Not really anything the resort can do other than clean it, but this did take away from the beauty of the beach.
Also the Latin dance classes! My husband and I had hoped for a couples class but it was more of a Zumba class. Would be nice to include a couples Latin dance class:)

Worst thing was the food. Buffet was only good for breakfast, lunch and dinner were almost uneatable. Specialty restaurants were better but the cooks would only cook what they wanted, twice we wre told that we couldn't order things on the menus and when we complained they suddenly were able to make them. Put our name on a list to get in one and watched as people who added their names after us were admited before us, this also wasn't corrected till I complained. Room was ok but needed repairs, bed was uncomfortable, service was hit and miss with some staff providing true 5 star service but most NOT. We have stayed at this resort in the past and had recommended to many people, not any more. Best they offered us with all this was a discount on a return trip, explained that this will not happen that our next trip will be at a different resort. At what we paid for this trip we could have been on a Celebrity cruise in a premium class with better food and service.

Arrived to room on first day and room door wasn’t locking on inside. They sent somebody up to fix that an hour after I called. While the maintenance man was working on the front door, I noticed the sliding door also was not locking and asked if he could look at that and he said you need to call back to the desk and left. I called back to the desk and nobody came. We went to bed that night woke up to the sound of water pouring out of the ceiling. I immediately called the front desk at 6 AM again at seven. I then had to go down to the front desk where I was told somebody would come to the room. At this point, we had used all the towels in our room to soak up the water. No one ever came. They just told me they’re working on the room above us and that it was OK just don’t use the light for 24 hours. No one came to clean it. No one replaced the towels. When we saw a maintenance man in the hallway, we asked him to come in and mop the floor, which he did and then we asked the cleaning lady who we saw in the hallway for more towels, and she gave them to us that afternoon. Fast-forward to that night, when bees were flying out of the bathroom light fixture in the ceiling. We would come to find out that this would be a frequent occurrence. I also went down to the desk and spoke about that and the water and the locks and they said they would send somebody and no one ever came up the entirety of our stay.

Room and property were nice. They advertise as a 5-star hotel but I think that's a bit of a stretch. The bathroom door was opaque glass and ìt didn't go up anywhere close to the ceiling. Point being, there was little privacy and you could hear EVERYTHING going on in there. Not overly romantic 😨.
Food was pretty good, nothing fantastic. Drinks were mostly good but tasted a bit watered down with ice. Staff was friendly but overall not as fluent in English as I would have expected. Never got to see a turtle as there is just a tiny area roped off in front of the dive center where you can see them for a price. We went during the turtle off-season, so this might not be an issue during other months. The stay was enjoyable and they have a very nice pool. Getting around to nearby areas by taxi or van seemed more complicated and expensive than other places we have been. The night we returned home to the States I came down with a HORRIBLE case of Montezuma's Revenge that completely wiped me out for 2 days. I can't prove I got it at the resort but just thought it was worth mentioning.

Yes, the resort was spotless and courteous.
Loved all the iguanas, and other wildlife. It was hard to snorkel there, but that is more a problem with the area than the resort. We were followed by a girl in a boat blowing her whistle at us because we got too close to a group snorkelling in lifejackets.
We only saw stingrays, no turtles.

The rooms were recently renovated and very nicely decorated. Housekeeping did a great job of keeping things clean and leaving towel animals daily. All rooms look out on the ocean. The grounds are absolutely beautiful as is the beach and ocean. We just ate at the buffet and food was good, nothing special, but always able to find something to eat. They have other restaurants available with other options but we didn't use them. Definitely a nice relaxing vacation in an absolutely beautiful location. Great for relaxing, but not for the folks wanting to party. The staff was wonderful and friendly.

What a lovely stay we had! From our wonderful and welcoming personalized check-in with Omar right until check out. The staff were warm and helpful and the room and amenities exceeded expectations. Loved being able to snorkel right from the beach and all of the activities available. We will definitely be back!

This is my second stay in this resort. I like it, but not sure I’d return. Custom restaurants are not great anymore, they share food with a main restaurant. Drinks are fine. The biggest issue this time were loud noisy tourists from the US one night and Italian another night. They woke me up with their yelling from the outside at 3 am from the 42/7 open bar. Management and administrators do not do any precautions before I called the reception. Even after that it took about an hour to get asleep. It was a tranquilizing experience back in 2023, but this time 2 of 7 nights of bad sleep :(

Our room was very clean and welcoming. The staff is and always has been excellent! Wilburt in the main bar is fantastic, Luis, Juan Carlos, and Aurora(the “egg” lady) in the buffet are fabulous! The beach bar has wonderful service and will fix special things if requested. We ate at the Mexican restaurant and at the Grill and the meals were amazing. The pork shank for two in the Mexican restaurant was beyond amazing. Ducelli, beach waitress, went above and beyond when serving us and remembered us from our previous visits!! They and the beauty of this resort keep us returning year after year!❤️

Good restaurants limited on capacity and don't let you make reservations. Save table to prime guys never show up and keep the table empty. On the beach has seats reserved and nobody used all day have to lay down on the sand. Shows finish early 10pm. We miss most of show. We finished eating at 9:30. Never have chance to enjoy the full show.

We went with 8 people, 4 adults and 4 late teens. Had a good time over New Years. Rooms were great. Food was ok. Rosa on the beach and the Omelette lady were excellent. Entertainment was great for the resort, just wished they had a pool table or ping pong. Beach was good. The morning chair claiming is tedious. Not sure why the hotel doesn’t have more chairs available. There is room on the beach. FYI-We have been to many beaches but we have never seen so many stingrays so close to beach. Snorkelling was awesome. We brought our own mask & snorkels and it was worth it.

The staff are wonderful, especially the bar and restaurant groups and still see many friendly members from our previous visits such as Albert (incredible manager), Adriana (buffet, the best!), Wilbert (lobby bar extraordinaire), German (beach manager, outstanding) and so many more - Thank you to all for your service. Perfect for my 40th birthday with another couple. A bit disappointed with the steak from the steakhouse but the other food options were great. The guys actually took a short excursion to fish and they prepared our caught fish with a special table and dinner for us. Highly recommend that experience! Spa experience was probably the best I've had and the water at the beach was so calm and peaceful. Would suggest bringing bug spray as little tiny flies were annoying and mosquitoes came out towards the evening. Also bring your own snorkel gear. Plenty on snorkeling water, but no equipment on property available. There just isn't a shop on premise for basic essentials. Rooms were spacious, cool and comfortable! Would go back for a long weekend experience with friends!

The property was amazing it was so relaxing and welcoming. All the staff was very helpful except one staff at the buffet was kind of short but other than that all the other staff was wonderful we wanted to take some of them home with us especially Adriana. The staff at the Peruvian restaurant gave us the best service we have ever had at any restaurant. We went there on our anniversary and had such a special intimate time. I plan to go back. We really wanted to call out the Peruvian staff by name because they were so wonderful and we lost the card that had their names on it. We stayed September 13th through the 21st so it should be pretty easy for the resort to figure out the wonderful staff that we had. I hope all of the staff gets paid very well as it was superb service.

The best thing is the ocean view and the magic of Akumal bay . It is quiet and safe . The staff working for over 10 years in this resort are very nice and helpful . The new hires kids from the block not so helpful . The food : bufet dinner and lunch not great . Too much cheap Chinese rice food , cheap paella, cheap pizza , cheap gelatin deserts. It used to be amazing Mexican fresh authentic food ten years ago .

I went to snorkel with the many turtles that were supposedly there.(Akumal- place of the turtles) Instead the whole area was totally covered in a type of seaweed. Dump trucks and bulldozers worked all day, starting at 6:30 in the morning to clear the beaches.The hotel itself was ok, kind of old and tired. The staff was very good.

Major renovation works taking place. Hard to relax by the pool with constant drilling and banging. Was
Not advised of this prior to booking. The room next door to us was also under renovation and work was carried out durning the night past 10pm on two occasions.
Balcony door very poor security and left open each day by Housekeeping. Did not work on arrival and a temporary fix was done. Hot tub did not work on arrival also the TV however this was fixed.

Hotel is generally nice. Most staff are helpful however a couple of staff give poor service.

My kids love Karla in the Kid's Club. I love how friendly everyone is and the renovated room we got in building 3. The sargassum is a problem right now, and there are some renovations causing some noise at the main pool. Also, the gym is currently closed for renovations as well, but the hotel still has the best snorkeling right off the beach that I've seen.

Resort was very average. I chose it because the rating was 9 and it was pitched as a 4-star resort. Not sure how it got either. It's a 3-star at best. I will say it has 2 things going for it: every room has an ocean view; and the staff is generally very nice (albeit incompetent).

Buildings 3 & 4, rooms are updated, but still not luxury. Very minimal in terms of amenities. (We used the provided bath salts the first night in the hot tub and they were not restocked by housekeeping, like body wash, lotion and shampoo. No one knew how to get that restocked.)

Other building's room are smelly (damp moldy smell) and run-down. The main pool's water has a strange order and is not clean.

Food was consistently bad. Very basic for the price paid – cheap and repetitive. Same thing every day on buffet. I typically eat vegan but here that was impossible. I had planned to eat vegetarian, but even that was challenging. Others on the trip had meat, but said it was poor quality, tough. One exception was the pumpkin enchiladas at Alux - those were fantastic.

The drinks were the cheapest possible brand. And still diluted. We were told there was branded alcohol like Baileys, Grey Goose, etc. – I even double-checked this before booking -- but nope.

In general, when you ask for something, you get passed off to someone else that just runs you in circles. Very frustrating. We asked for a candle once, they said they didn't have one...but every table in restaurants had them.

I like having an ocean view, being to have a private beach and walkable to town. The only negative is a staff whose name is Amparo was very rude and ignored us. She even looked at us and started talking to another staff person. She wouldn't take our order in the snack bar and if she did, she never gave it to us. I had to ask another staff for our order, and he got it, and it was cold. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who got the cold shoulder from her. The fact is we didn't even do anything to her for her to treat us that way. Please let management know about tis staff.

We absolutely love ABR! Our family has been visiting this resort for the past 15 years, and it continues to be a special place for us. Each year, we notice thoughtful updates and improvements, all while maintaining the natural beauty of the grounds, which blend seamlessly with the surroundings. Everything is always impeccably clean, and the staff is consistently kind, polite, and attentive.

We especially enjoy the 8 AM yoga sessions, daily beach volleyball, and the wide variety of delicious food and drinks. While the evening entertainment could use some improvement—most nights the bands don't quite energize the crowd—there’s always a great atmosphere in the main palapa after dinner. Sundays are a highlight, with a fantastic Salsa/Cumbia band that gets everyone on the dance floor!

During our recent stay, the sargassum issue affected the beaches, which was unfortunate but beyond anyone’s control. Akumal Bay is typically home to some of the most stunning beaches and snorkeling we’ve ever experienced.

Overall, we love this resort for its welcoming, international vibe and outstanding customer service. We look forward to returning again!

Relaxing Retreat with Incredible Service — Watch out for the Seaweed

We recently stayed at Akumal Wellness Resort in Akumal, Mexico, and overall had a wonderful and restorative experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel truly welcome — warm, attentive, and genuinely kind. The people here are what make this place so special.

One of the highlights of our trip was the spa — the services were absolutely amazing. Every treatment we experienced was expertly done, leaving us relaxed and refreshed. It’s a must-do if you're staying at the resort.

The food and drinks were another highlight. Every meal was delicious, and the drinks were always on point — fresh, flavorful, and plentiful. Whether poolside or at dinner, the culinary offerings exceeded our expectations.

The only downside of our trip was the sargassum (seaweed) on the beach. Unfortunately, it was heavy during our visit, which made the beach largely unusable. While this is a natural and seasonal issue that many Caribbean destinations face, it was disappointing not to be able to fully enjoy the otherwise beautiful beachfront.

That said, the resort made up for it in many other ways. If you're looking for a relaxing escape with great people, fantastic food, and top-tier wellness services, Akumal Wellness Resort is worth considering. Just be sure to check the seaweed conditions if the beach is a key part of your vacation plans. Would have been 5 stars if not for the seaweed.

Do not purchase extra time for massages , they will charge you and not give you the time and refuse to give your money back. Also was given the “honeymooners package” and only received part of it. The food was not good, there were maybe 3 good dishes between all 4 restaurants and don’t waste your time on the buffet. The place is quiet which we enjoyed, but their snorkeling only includes a mask not a snorkel so they will charge you for the snorkel as well. They make up their own currency exchange there that is different from anywhere else in akumal so you will pay out the butt for anything at the resort. the staff was overall very good and attentive. Honestly the only great this was the room, which didn’t have hot water for 2 days, and the staff and waiters. Stay at the resort next door as it’s nicer and seems to have happier guests.

Every thing was great: room, pools, beach, restaurant, food, live music, drinks, but special the workers, not only they work hard, but specially how nice they are, how hard they do to be sure that be are happy.
My special thanks to Manuel Novelo, he treated us like VIP guest, you are the best.

The service was beyond expectations!
The snorkeling was the best I have found off the beach at a resort.
Plenty of beach chairs and towels
Buffet, snack bar and sushi bar were very good.
The Mexican restaurant was by far the best of all others. Rooms were clean and comfortable!

Nice and clean room ,very friendly employees
Food was good, Mexican restaurant was the best.
Big disappointment was the beach, tons seagrass prevent swimming . Because of that pool was overcrowded .
