Room and bathrooms are pretty old. I saw mold in the bathroom. They try to keep it clean. Staff are very friendly. Food is ok in the tropical, but in the Caribbean, food is excellent. My kids love the pool with the slide. Overall the hotel is ok.

After a rocky start upon arrival (previously detailed), the staff stepped up and helped to provide us with the experience that we expected and more. Olivia (assistant manager at the front desk at Barcelo maya tropical) (and others incl Ishmael and Yuliana) were awesome. Olivia worked with us to get our dinners set up and really was the difference in making our stay great). One thing to know is that there are 4 properties, all together and all the rooms are pretty much the same. So if you get there and they put u in a different location (we were booked at tropical but they placed us t colonial), it doesn’t matter. It’s just next door. Everything is walking distance and if yo are further from one thing,u are closer to another.

Hotel property is beautiful. Beds are comfortable. Beach was very nice and well maintained with the seaweed. However! The restaurant situation is ridiculous. We checked in, went to make reservations and there was NOTHING available for any night we were there. Nothing. We stayed 5 nights and had zero opportunity to have a nice sit down, non buffet, meal. For what we paid to stay there? Restaurants were very small and could not accommodate many people. Very poorly planned for this large of a resort.
Also, pay extra for mini golf? Pay extra for waterpark? Pay extra for go carts? What? Why not just include it all in the package? Who wants to keep paying for every little extra thing? People go to all inclusive for it to be ALL INCLUSIVE.
Everything else, I thought was pretty good.

Didn’t look too bad but besides that we were very underwhelmed.

The buffets had pretty mid food. If you’re not a fan of 10 different kinds of beans and other random things you’re gonna eat fries the whole time.
Restaurants were decent but nothing crazy.
Beach was very bad. Lots of sargassum, lots of rocks in the water.

The main thing is that we booked with our whole family and we all booked for maya tropical. But in the end we got separated and no one even got to stay in tropical. Very unfortunate as our family flew in from multiple states and wanted to be all together. Service at the restaurants wasn’t great, seemed like everything was understaffed. Over all like a 2/5 experience.

We booked private round-trip transportation through MTS for our stay in Riviera Maya. What we got instead was stress, confusion, and zero customer support.
When we landed in Cancun and picked up our luggage at 8:45 pm, our driver was nowhere to be found. The two MTS representatives at the airport could not tell us if or when a driver was coming, even though we had prepaid for a private shuttle. Other groups around us were in the same situation — all of us had booked private transfers and some had already been waiting over an hour.
After sitting there for hours with no information, it became clear that no private shuttle was coming. Eventually, it seemed like one of the reps called in a favor from an unrelated driver and put us on what was clearly a shared shuttle — even though we paid for private. We didn’t leave the airport until 11:51 pm and didn’t arrive at our hotel until 1:15 am, more than four hours after getting our bags. Our hotel was the last stop.
Many people at the airport, including us, honestly thought we had been scammed.
We were told to email MTS to request a partial refund. I did — multiple times — both to my assigned rep and their customer service email. No one ever replied. No refund was issued.
To make things worse, even our return transfer was late because the driver kept going to the wrong hotel lobby.
This company completely failed to deliver the service we paid for, and their customer service afterward was non-existent. If you’re considering MTS, don't.

we traveled here as a family of three. The place was very nice. Unfortunately the tough part was that you cannot make reservations after you arrive. There’s never anything available unless you want to eat at 9 PM. The pools were amazing, my son loved the splash pad. The beach is absolutely beautiful. The food was decent at the buffet. I can’t really speak for the other restaurants because we unfortunately weren’t able to make reservations. The rooms were nice. If you have a little one, turning around the couch, turns into a perfect toddler bed..

Family of 4 traveling with 2 boys 6 & 11. There was so much to at the resort as you could walk between the 4 resorts and use most of the amenities (except the adults-only if you booked at one of the others).

We stayed at the Tropical and it had the best buffet with widest selection. The caribe had the worst selection and no one grilling food any time we went for lunch?

The restaurants were good, our favorites were the tepenyaki and steakhouse where they made my oldest boys birthday fairly special.

We walked around quite a bit, but just in the resort we walked on average 20K steps per day which made for a surprisingly active holiday, things are laid out really well and by day 3 you should know how to get around within 5-10 minutes of any building on the property.

Entertainment was mediocre, they had a few good shows, the theatre's are quite impressive in size but we the Christmas specials were a bit of a flop.

Overall probably a 7.5/10. If you want good entertainment, the Hardrock Riviera Maya for families was awesome!

The resort is “HUGE” but the seating choices at pool or beach all get taken from people putting towels to reserve since 6:00 am. Making reservation for dining at duration of our 6 day stay and we had no options to dine anywhere of the specialty or themed restaurants (and this happened to multiple guests. I asked the resort employee in charge of making reservations wha our options were and her answer was “you can eat at the buffet every day”! This is the same place you have breakfast and if you want also you can have lunch. I said to her that was not a great solution and that maybe a credit or some sort of compensation should be given to all of us that couldn’t get this service since one of the attraction and reason for staying and paying at the all inclusive is the choices of dining at different themed ethnic restaurants each night! The reservation person proceeded to tell me “o well! and anyway your only allowed three restaurants during your stay” in a very rude an nasty way (her name was NINA) so I asked her to show me where on the website description of amenities it stipulated this but of course she couldn’t produce the claim! I proceeded to speak to a manager and he managed to get us 2 restaurants but at 5:00 pm ( who eats dinner at 5!.. )
Our room was not cooling sufficiently so I called since the day we arrived but they never came to fix!

I left CAD 5$ bills (3.64 usd) 3 mornings in a row - then 1$ USD - then 50 pecos - they did not take it - I left it all there when I left. - they did not keep the room - made up - did not keep fridge stocked every day - had a hard time getting large bills changed to leave tips - would have left more if service was better. I had 5 rooms for my family.- this was the only room that this happened to

While the buffet had a wide variety of food choices most of the food was either cold or slightly warm. While the decor of the unit we stayed in was visually pleasing it was in need of some repair work. Our first unit had a ceiling leak after a heavy rainfall. We were eventually moved to a second unit but for whatever reason the bedding felt damp and the bathroom tissue was always limp.

Went on 1st week of October, weather was still fine, only one evening it rained, better than forecast which showed 7 days of non-stop rain.

Good hotel for family vacation with kids. Beach is very nice, shallow which is nice for those who have smaller kids. We saw plenty of fish in the water. Pools are large so there is plenty of space of everyone to swim and be comfortable. Food and drinks are okay, nothing fancy but quite decent for the price paid.

Overall good hotel in terms of price value, spending 5-7 days on the beach if that's what you are looking for. If you are looking for luxury - check other pricier hotels, but if what you need is good budget friendly hotel to spend time with family and kids - this maybe what you are looking for.

Overall experience was good, Facilities were clean and the room was good except that the A/C was not working good. The staff was unprofessional and always waiting for tips and if you don’t give tips they will take forever to prepare your order.

Everything was fine. The rooms were clean, and the pool was very nice. I was there for six days and was only allowed to go to two restaurants, which made no sense to me. I had to eat at the buffet, and that's where it annoyed me. The food at the buffet was horrible. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were gross. I couldn't even eat the food. When I asked where I could eat since the buffet was so bad, they said the snack bar had food, and it did: apples, pears, and bananas. Oh yeah, also popcorn. This is the first time i went to an all-inclusive resort and lost weight

We went with a group of 10. We emailed and called ahead of time and were able to get all our rooms close to eachother and 2 joining rooms. The resort is beautiful. The staff work hard to meet all your needs. There are plenty of options food wise. The steak restaurant was amazing. We used Mexican Travel Solutions with no issues. We confirmed our transportation plans before our drop off/pick up dates and there is a rep on site (Colonial). Our trip was amazing-it is what you make it-we always have a great time!

This Barcelo Maya resort has 6 lobbies/properties.

When checked in upon arrival at theTropical, they could not find our name and said they reserved the rights to switch us to another property, which was Caribe. We were told everything should be the same. Based on our experience, Caribe was a bit older than Tropical.

There are multiple drop in buffets and snack bars, including 5 formal restaurants. You can only book 4 maximum per stay and before 3pm. Overall quality and services were great.

It takes a few days to get comfortable with the navigation around the resort. There’s bus services onsite to go from one property to another.

However, the biggest feedback for the resort is to have more signages to guide guests and direction destination on the bus. One time it took us 30 minutes to travel by bus just from Caribe to Tropical, when walking would've only take less than 10 minutes. This is because the buses have no direction indicator to tell you which direction they are traveling, and they could take you for a loop before going to the destination of choice.

Staff are friendly and most can speak basic English.

Internet WiFi is good throughout the resort, even at the pool and beach areas.

Excursions can be booked on-site and the staff was helpful.

Free water activities must be booked on the same day where lineup starts at 8:30am.

The property is huge and clean. Swimming pool was not overcrowded even though there were alot of people around. We stayed at Barcelo Maya Tropical. Check in process was quick and easy but were not offered a room upgrade or any kind of accommodation for a special celebration. Our room was outdated. Shower tub was not draining well and water pressure was so low. Pool service was poor and understaffed. They have a big bar but only 2 bar tenders sometimes 1. Its location was far and inconvenient. The drinks were too sweet and watered down alcohol. It feels like your drinking juice rather than margarita. Food is the same everyday and no other variety of cuisine. The worst part is ala cart dinner reservations were limited. You were only allowed 2 reservations on a 4 night stay. Which unfortunately was not available until our last 2 nights. They didn’t even try to accommodate our request on a 3rd night for a birthday celebration. Overall, it was an ok experience. Nothing so special about the service other than a great view, great entertainment at the theater and cheaper activities than any other places.

We liked the all included meals & beverages. It was our first time in this hotel & we liked the connecting walks to the other hotel nearby. The hotel was very beautiful with views from the ocean to the swimming area. Very clean, Very kind & friendly people. We loved the shows. We did not like that we were unable to take food to our hotel room or to the pool area especially on the late nights after touring the city.. Not enough options for room service.. Also, had a very scary moment a few days ago. While we were at lunch at Barcelo Tropical, Mariachi grill. another The people sitting next to the table we were sent too took my personal bag while I left it behind to go get food from the buffet. My room keys, phone, glasses & personal items were in that bag! Those people clearly saw me from the moment we arrived & took advantage to take my belongings. Thankfully my 11 year old daughter spotted my bag & I took it away asap!! The tourist people were not trustworthy & they left the minute I got my bag. I failed to report the problem to the hotel because I did not know. I hope there are cameras all over for the safety of other tourist especially in the swimming areas.
