Overall, we really enjoyed the resort. Our chill out suite was beautiful and had everything we needed. The property is in great condition and felt like it was new. I guess we were lucky in our timing of when we went because the beach was clear and perfect. When there was some seaweed that washed up on shore, there were people constantly cleaning it. We only used the pool once for the aqua fit class. The water temperature seemed perfect. The hot tub wasn’t really hot so we would have liked it to be a little warmer and maybe one more hot tub rather than just one. It was more like a small warm pool. The service from the staff was great. Our only criticisms were that there was not a lot to do. It was perfect for a four day getaway, but we wouldn’t wanted to have been there any longer because we would find ourselves getting bored. They don’t have tons of activities to keep you busy throughout the day although we were happy with the few things we participated in such as guacamole making and aqua fit. We would’ve loved to have done the yoga, but it was a little too early for us in the morning. We wanted to sleep in. The food was good at the restaurants, but personally, I would’ve preferred one buffet open during the afternoon. Rather than having to sit formally and order and be served and then find out I didn’t love the food and had to wait for another order to arrive. I didn’t mind the restaurant for dinner though. The food was pretty good. I would definitely go back to this resort

The resort was wonderful, the staff was exemplary, from Emilio at the beach house, Betsy the activity coordinator, Miguel our concierge and Angel the valet who really helped us when our transport from MTS shuttle service (which we also booked through Expedia’s under their name speedy shuttle), failed to show up as they went to the incorrect resort and then refused to come get us. Angel immediately helped us and got us a taxi to the airport.
The rooms were spotlessly clean thanks to our housekeeper Olga, the food was excellent as were the drinks which use prime alcohol all the name brand you could think of were available. The beach was perfect cleaned and there were beach chair as well as pool chair available. Their coffee shop was wonderful with fresh coffee, and special coffees made daily and lovely muffins and pastries there were so many wonderful things about this resort. We loved it there and hope to return. We loved it was a smaller resort and the care of the staff made this holiday truly wonderful.

We enjoyed the warm welcome with Pina colada popsicles and fast check in. Very clean rooms and beach as sea weeds are removed daily by staff. We enjoyed the fun activities arranged by Itzel and Betzie, including Margarita rally, foam party, paddling board, and card games. Excellent food quality. Food was a la carta instead of buffet for lunch, which was great as it was served fresh, but anticipate a bit of wait at the international restaurant. It has 3bars so no need to wait for long to get a drink. Drink was sometimes a lot more juice than actual drink at the end of the day. I felt like the restaurant staff were overworked from early morning to midnight which was not fair to them

I honestly don’t know where to begin. We have stayed at approximately 20 different resorts in Mexico, hands down THE BEST one yet. CLEAN, lovely rooms, comfortable beds, the food…. OMG! It was delicious… every single thing we had was great! The staff… absolutely amazing! The beach and multiple pools are spectacular. We will be returning for sure!

Bars had limited hours and closed earlier than advertised. No buffet everything was a sit down and was a big ordeal to eat an 1-1.5 every time you wanted to eat. I like my buffets where you can grab and go quick. Not every meal has to be sit down and if you didn’t like what was in the limited menu as options you were out of luck. Entertainment was very limited as well. It’s a place for seniors 75+ or people who go to bed with the chickens.

We stayed at the Cancun resort - the family site with the beach The Riviera Maya site is adults only with no beach (yet). I will repeat what others have said; the staff are phenomenal. Attentive to any request. Everyone is professional and works very hard. Service with a smile, and on two occasions I noticed they were utmost polite even when guests were being very rude to them.
Rooms, pools, and entire resort very clean. I especially took note of the team that gets up before dawn and works through to the sweltering midday heat to clear any seaweed that washes up on shore - back-breaking work.
The food is excellent. The produce and seafood is especially fresh. Of the four restaurants, Beach House is our favourite. Rita's Taco Lounge is a fun alternative for lunch, offering several unique margaritas. For dinner, if not Beach House, we preferred The Latino to Frank's Italian, but both are excellent. I had so many memorable meals, but in the end my favourite was the grilled octopus from The Latino. All the soups at all the restaurants were outstanding. After a week, we had a chance to explore much of the menus, but wish we had one or two more week to taste everything. That said, we left every meal uncomfortably full, having been allowed to order as much as we wanted. If I had asked the staff to roll me out of there, I'm sure they would have obliged.
We would 100% return here again, and we recommend this resort to anyone.

This resort had it all! This is one of the smaller resorts we’ve been to and I can’t say enough good things. First of all, the staff is amazing!! Everyone and I mean everyone smiles and greats you. They take the time to make sure that you have what you need and taken care of, room service especially. The bartenders are awesome (shout out Elbert) and pour great drinks. The check in was smooth, plenty of pools, and great activities. Will definitely come back!

The food is incredible compared to other resorts, à la carte restaurants first come first serve no reservation needed and you will always be seated. The staff is so friendly, kind and welcoming. The rooms are spacious, beautifully decorated and clean. Beautiful beach, and a lot of places on the resort to lounge. If you’re looking for a destination for pure relaxation, and great food, this is the spot!

The Margaritaville Island Reserve Riviera Cancún vibe is very relaxed and the place was spotless. Staff without exception were great starting with an \"ask\" on checking in that was accomodated followed by room service as were arrived later in the evening. The pool was a bit chilly as weather during our week was chilly too but we enjoyed each of the restaurants, the spa and used a bali bed on the beach for our last full day (really worth it if we join family/grandkids there next time!)

The staff was very nice and my room was clean. There were a lot of offers that turned out to be only if I became a member. I went for my 40th birthday and saw a voucher for $150 for a facial and massage and hydrotherapy but when I asked about it it was $350. Also they kept saying they would do something nice for my birthday like dinner on the beach or something but I had to buy it all. They did leave rose petals on my bed though and build a cake out of towels. That was pretty cool. Also, I went the one week it was very cold apparently.

The grounds were beautiful. Everything was very clean and well manicured.
Difficult to get beach and pool chairs. Everyone was up early saving their spots. Hotel is off the beaten path. Beach was ok but Cancun beaches are much nicer. No beach/pool food or drink service. Drinks available at the bar. Smaller resort.

We had a great stay. This is a very small resort Staff are amazing. Rooms are clean. A little dated with paint covering up old walls I. Rooms and not done well for a 5 star resort. Restaurants are good. Breakfast was disappointing. Very little options Bread was always hard and no bagels in buffet. The sister hotel had a wonderful breakfast when we went to visit so that was not great for us. Beds were comfy Beach was not good. Lots of seaweed and the smell from the seaweed made it difficult to be on the beach. Pools were all cold which was also a disappointment since you could swim at the beach. 5 star for staff. 3.5-4 for food and facilities

We’ve traveled to Cancun for over a decade, and this was the worst place we’ve ever stayed. The staff is not friendly. There are very few events/activities. One night there was Bingo at the bar- not even enough cards for 12 players. The food is poor quality. The buffet restaurant was only for breakfast and wasn’t full of options. The taco house was good but closed at 5pm. There is no swimmable ocean. The Live bands and Spa were positive features. My crew is in our 50’s- not a wild bunch. We were not pleased and would never return. Not a lot of people we met were thrilled with this resort, so I have no clue how it has such high reviews.

The room was amazing and the amenities are great. This resort definitely has more of a relaxing vibe than a very touristy/party vibe. A great variety of guests but maybe 60-70% were retirees. We went as a couple in late 20s and made plenty of friends around our age group. Not a whole lot of children even though this is a family friendly place. Would return if provided an excellent deal like we were. This resort stands out for having great value. We went on 2 excursions during our 6 days stay. My wife really enjoyed the atv/zipline/cenote. I'm an adrenaline junky so it was it was too relaxed for me. We went on the catamaran excursion to isle mujeres which was pretty disappointing. We speak spanish so didn't buy the overpriced golf cart on the boat. We got it for half price, but it's honestly not needed. It's nice to just walk around the local shops. The excursion is supposed to include snorkeling and swimming and we did neither since the captain said its too dangerous. We saw plenty of other boats stopping to swim and do what the guests paid for. We ended the trip with a couples back massage. I didn't like it. They provided me with no information about the massage or other things the spa has to offer. I wasn't given a chance to put my things away, so my phone and keys were jabbing me in my sides the whole time. They just kind of pushed you thru it. I wanted a full spa/relaxing experience but just left annoyed. You want to keep the person that pays for everything happy. ME!

Hotel setup is nice, not too large, and pleasant overall.
Beach is clean as well, but you can’t go in the water.
Rooms are very disappointing, aging, not well maintained, and cleaning service isn’t done even when the sign is on the door from morning to evening.
Food quality is really low, and not always fresh. Even with strong stomach…we got sick.
Staff is a hit or miss. Some can be pleasant, but staff at the reception don’t care about clients and only try to upgrade you…instead of looking for solutions. Some waiters are very rude and only looking for tips.
Not worth the money overall.

We spent a week at this resort and loved almost every aspect
If your looking for a huge resort thats busy then this isn't for you. The resort is spread out but doesn't have the huge 700 rooms building. We got upgraded for free. The only negative is there was no hot tub and no snack service. For example no fried and chips and salsa spot to help yourself. I would highly recommend this place! Absolutely gorgeous

I went with my husband and some family and friends, and we had the best time!
The staff was incredible, from the servers and bartenders to the housekeeping staff and events crew, they provided stellar service and were so friendly and fun!
The resort itself is beautiful, very small and walkable, which was perfect for our taste. They put so much work in keeping the grounds groomed and clean, and you could tell. The place was gorgeous and both the public spaces and the rooms were so clean. The food was pretty good, Rita's Taco House being our absolute favourite. There was always activities and entertainment each night, but you could also just sit and relax!
We would absolutely go back again.

Felt like 3 star hotel at 5 star price.

Didn’t take Canadian money to exchange for Pesos. Even though exchange rate was posted behind check in counter.
Was told by concierge that the price was $40 USD each way to go to Puerto Morales. I asked for cheaper option. He said that was it. I phoned Uber and paid $9.00 USD. Resort was way down a long dirt road with huge potholes. No were to walk. Pools were very cold. Lots of seaweed and Ocean looked very murky. When I did go for a swim the life guard blew his whistle and ran over to kick me out of the water. Not sure why because he didn't have any english. My Spanish is very basic. The breakfast was almost the same everyday ( not good) . Lunch was okay and the dinners were good. Unfortunately me and my wife go to bed fairly early but our room was right beside there nightly entertainment and bar. The entertainment staff were okay but had not much to work with. Lastly I thought we were going to an Adults only resort. Its not. Part of the resort is but it wasn't advertised that way. I go to Mayan Riviera 3 times a year and

We really liked this resort and felt it was an excellent value for what we paid. The staff was very friendly, the food was very good, and the taco house became our go-to spot, although we wished it stayed open later than 12–5. A couple of our restaurant meals took well over an hour, so just know you might be hanging out for a while when you sit down. It’s very family friendly, which is great, but it also means kids tend to join in on most activities. The ocean water here isn’t very clear, so this wouldn’t be the first choice if you’re hoping to do a lot of snorkeling, unless you book an excursion somewhere else. Overall we're very happy with the experience.

We stayed at Margaritaville Island Reserve Cancun in 2021 and had such a great experience that we returned in December 2025 and even brought extended family with us. Sadly, this visit was extremely disappointing and nowhere near the quality we once experienced.

The resort has declined significantly in almost every area.
Food options were very limited and the overall quality was poor. Many dishes lacked variety, and even worse, a lot of ingredients simply weren’t available — both at restaurants and even the smoothie bar — so items on the menus often couldn’t actually be ordered. The “resort credits” were also misleading in value, as they can only be used on a very small selection of snacks and beer at Joe Merchant’s, making them basically useless.

Service and atmosphere weren’t the same either.
While the restaurant wait staff were friendly and did their best, many other staff members felt unwelcoming and unhappy to be there, which really affected the overall vibe. Despite the front desk insisting it was a “busy” period, the resort felt empty and lifeless, with limited daytime activities and almost no meaningful evening entertainment.

First day we arrived to the hotel. The bathtubs was leaking water and the whole trip, the TV was not stable (keep flashing) cause they are using the Internet tv. Pools was small and morning buffet was only offer limited selection. I strongly believe this hotel will lack staffs.

Front desk people are did not provide us the resort credit $100 when we check out.

The food options were very limited and they often did not have items available which were on the menu. The breakfast was particularly bad as the options were extremely limited and not replenished quickly (always empty trays of food no matter what time you went). The rooms are quite dated but clean. The property itself is well maintained however the beach was not useable due to seaweed and garbage washing up on shore (very limited staff to clean it up). The $500 resort credit though Expedia was misleading and very limited in the way that it could be utilized so we did not use it as it’s not a true resort credit. The staff were mostly friendly and helpful however the check in process was slow and not very welcoming. Also, for being a Margaritaville resort, the Margaritas served were underwhelming. The resort feels more like a 4 star as opposed to a 5 star.

It was our second time staying here, and while nothing was terrible, the quality of everything seemed to have slipped a little bit. It was just a lot of little annoyances that will keep us from coming back here again. The service from the staff was not as friendly as the first time. The service at all the restaurants was slow, and the servers seemed a little aggravated (or overworked). There were a few nice servers, but overall not the same as last time. The restaurants were running out of a lot of items as well or just didn't have them. A little disappointing because there are not that many places to eat to begin with. The coffee shop closed earlier than advertised.

The TV service was not working, it kept glitching and pixellating in all the rooms, we had 3 different rooms. So our kids couldn't watch NFL games, and we couldn't watch movies as we had hoped. The pools were also not heated this time; the water was cold, so swimming was not fun either. This was kinda important.

So it was a lot of little things that made the vacation not great. It wasn't a terrible experience, but this place is slipping, and we won't be coming back.

The resort looks polished, but the experience felt inconsistent. Housekeeping staff and many restaurant servers worked hard, but some front-line interactions, especially at check-in, felt reserved rather than welcoming. We had requested early check-in, and although the resort seemed quiet throughout the day, we received no update. We eventually went to the front desk ourselves when it was nearly the regular check-in time, and only then were told the room was ready. They had mentioned we would get an email update, but none came, which made the process feel unclear.

Food quality varied. At Flank & Lola’s, the vongole pasta was excellent one night but came out completely differently the next day—with mussels instead of clams and an Alfredo-style sauce. The server said they had run out of clams, yet the seafood risotto still had them. Food was slow even when restaurants weren’t busy. Smoothies tasted artificial, and the coffee was very light with less friendly service at the coffee bar.
Joe Merchant had limited options, and snacks required many points. Since you can’t see any itemized deductions, points drop quickly and it’s hard to know exactly how they were used. The timeshare offer felt a bit sneaky, and asking about a couple’s massage offer led only to unnecessary discussion and didn’t leave us feeling good.

I wanted to share an honest review of our stay at Margaritaville Cancun, because while there were some positives, there were also several disappointing aspects that future guests should be aware of.

Unfortunately, the food was the biggest letdown of our trip. With the exception of some really good wings and ribs that my husband had, the food overall was very poor. Breakfast options were extremely limited, and bacon was almost never available. When it was, it wouldn’t be replenished unless you specifically asked, and even then it was hit or miss. I tried going both early and later in the morning with the same result.

Even more concerning, many guests we spoke with—including myself—experienced stomach aches and diarrhea, which we strongly believe was caused by the food.

On a positive note, the housekeeping staff does an excellent job keeping the resort very clean, and that effort does not go unnoticed.

Service, however, was inconsistent. Most of the bartenders we encountered were rude and clearly unhappy in their roles. That said, one bartender named Abdiel truly stood out in the best way. He was kind, personable, and genuinely seemed to enjoy his job. He made guests feel welcome, which sadly was not the norm elsewhere.

The late-night front desk staff were also rude during our interactions. Additionally, the main bar closes sharply at 10:00 PM, after which there is only a very small sports bar open until midnight. On more than one occasion, this bar closed 10 minutes early

Unfortunately, my experience at this resort was disappointing due to a booking issue. There are two Margaritaville resorts in Cancun with almost identical names, and this caused me to unintentionally book the family resort instead of the adults-only property I was specifically looking for. This was very frustrating and disappointing for me and my friends, as it significantly changed the type of vacation we expected.

In addition, the buffet and restaurant menus were very limited, with little variety during our stay, which was another drawback.

The main positive aspect of the resort was the staff, who were friendly, polite, and genuinely tried to be helpful.

I strongly recommend that Expedia and the resort make the distinction between these two properties much clearer to avoid similar situations for other travelers.

A very nice small resort with nice staff. VERY quiet, limited activities, events ended too early and night. Bars close to early. Resort is for a tourist expecting a quiet and very laid back surroundings. Not enjoyable to stay solely on the resort for 5-7 days.

And the Compass bar was so much fun due to the best bartender and mixologist Manuel!! He was so friendly, fun and so attentive to all our drinks!! We will definitely be back! The resort is small and friendly, beautifully laid out, wonderful spa, and great bars!

Just finished our trip at this resort. Overall it was great.
The food is good at all the restaurants.
The only problem with the food is you have to go into a restaurant to eat.
There are no quick eat options. It would be great if they had a taco or burger stand near the pools to grab a quick bite while you are in the pool.
Room service is great also.
There is 1 swim up bar. The rest of the bars you have to get out of the pool to get drinks. Every once in a while the bartender will bring you drinks. Make sure you are tipping well and they will take care of you.
If you want chairs at the main two pools reserve them early. Most people get up before 7 to reserve chairs. There are not very many pool chairs. That’s probably the biggest complaint I have.
Be prepared for the pools to be chilly but you get used to it quick.
The beach is ok. Water is a dirty brown. Lots of seaweed but the staff keeps it cleaned up.
The hammocks and floating beds are amazing.
The staff was great.
Joe merchants has a very limited selection. This is also where the coffee shop is.
There is also a smoothie place open in the morning.
The gift shop is very expensive. Don’t forget your sunscreen and aloe products.

So this place had its good and bad. Food selection was limited, especially the breakfast. I know it’s a small resort but eggs/ French toast/bacon gets really old. Rita’s tacos was okay. The Italian restaurant we were only able to get in to one of the days, seems like that’s where everyone wanted to go. It wasn’t even very crowded, I would hate to imagine it when it’s full capacity.
Beach was terrible. Dark murky, sand was like walking in a river. Not the resort’s fault completely, but just the puerto Morelos area anymore.
Staff was awesome! Abdiel and Mario were great, the staff all seems happy which I love.
Grounds were nice and pools clean.
Not much in the way of entertainment, definitely more of a VERY chill/older person place.
We upgraded our room to the suite and loved it. Housekeepers did a great job.
The takeaway- will I go back? No. But if someone loves the smaller resort and is a creature of habit with food, then I recommend this place for that.
