I was very disappointed with my stay at this hotel. We paid a significant amount for the room and even more to upgrade to the all-inclusive package, expecting to be able to enjoy the hotel’s amenities during our stay.

However, we quickly discovered that many of the facilities advertised were not actually available to guests. When we tried to book services such as massages or use certain facilities like the gym, we were told these were only accessible if you became a member. This wasn’t a normal hotel membership either — it required paying for a separate membership that lasts five years. This felt very misleading, as these amenities appear to be part of the hotel experience but are not actually available to regular guests.

On top of this, the food and drinks included in the all-inclusive package were very disappointing and well below the standard we expected for the price we paid.

Overall, the experience did not match the expectations set by the hotel’s advertising. We paid a premium expecting a relaxing, full-service stay, but instead felt that many things were restricted or not worth the cost. Future guests should be made aware of these limitations before booking.

First of all I had booked a king size and they gave us 2 twins and a handicap room. So I went to the front desk and told them so they can change our room and the manager told us room 905 so we went up stairs and when we walked in there were towels all on the floor on the side of the bed and in the showers the soap and shampoo dripping down the wall and to top it off the bed had pubic hairs and also on the pillows. I went down stairs and called room service to clean the room. After that they treated us like we were nobody we would go to the restaurant and they would take care of all the Americans and us took them half of my meal to bring us a glass of water. That’ll be the last time I will book in the Sunset Royal.

Kind of a mediocre hotel. Staff was friendly but they sometimes got frustrated with the insufficient staffing. Food was very good but the wait times to get into the restaurants were often ridiculous - an hour and 45 minutes on one occasion. The bed in our room was so bad that we requested to be moved to another room, which they did, and the bed was much better. We are Sunset resort members but had a hard time finding a place in the members only area because they don't monitor who is there and don't seem to care. Beach is beautiful but the surf is rough, so it isn't really a swimming beach. Pool is kind of pathetic. Not attractive and rather small. Lots of noisy activities going on all the time. We did the $160 romantic dinner on the beach, and the food was basically the same as the food in the restaurants, with some minor flourishes. This is the kind of place where you won't be thrilled but if you do some price tradeoffs maybe it is worth it. There are so many hotels in the area that it is hard to find anything that is special but I'm sure there is something out there.

Could not get american dollars at hotel. We could not make change as well. Make sure you bring smaller bills staff was courteous. Check out is posted for 11am but was called that morning to be out by 9pm. Our flight was later so we had to sit on n lobby longer than expected due to getting kicked out of our room at 9am.

The hotel Expedia recommended was overbooked. When we arrived at Sunset Royal Beach, an all inclusive hotel, they checked us in and after we paid the room taxes they informed us they were overbooked. They said they would put us in a better hotel that was down the street; however, the hotel, Hacienda Tres Ríos was an hour away. The room was supposed to be an upgrade but we had to ask them to stock the refrigerator, bring a blow dryer, the phone wasn’t working properly, the plug next to the bed wasn’t working, the back door wouldn’t lock properly and a small wooden door fell off the wall because it wasn’t mounted properly to the wall. The screw from the door scratched my friend’s hand when she attempted to catch the small door from hitting the floor. We attempted to order cocktails and were told we couldn’t order the premium alcohol. We attempted to order a ribeye steak and we were told we couldn’t order the premium items on the menu. We paid for an all inclusive resort and now it was no longer all inclusive for us. The ocean was not a pretty blue color like we thought we were getting and what we had paid for at the other hotel. There was no shopping areas around us so if we wanted to go shopping in Cancun we had to pay for a taxi to take us an hour away. We met approx. 10 other families that were sent to this hotel due to overbooking at Sunset Royal Beach. It appeared that Sunset Royal Beach purposely overbooked their hotel so they could send people to Hacienda Tres Ríos.

We were not able to check into Sunset Royal. Apparently, they had overbooked and sent us to a different resort with restrictions and horrible location. We met a few other families with the same situation, and they also booked with Expedia.
Are they doing it to all Expedia Reservations? I am losing faith in Expedia. Ruined my vacation.

Room was noisy, and has single facial, hand, and bath towel for 2 guest, multiple requests to receive additional towel.
A la carte dinning was mediocre. No menu available you had to view it from your cellphone . Seafood choices was limited to tilpia every day.
Leftover from lunch served as Asian stir-fry at nite.
Free water taxi was nice but did not follow the schedule. Had to wait 30 plus minutes to show up
Seems understaffed at times, only had a single cook during lunch at the Marina resort outdoor dinning, had to wait 30 minutes to get our food, and our pizza was burnt
Free water sport only had a few kayaks, no paddle board or pedal boat

Room 405 was noisy, we were exposed to the kitchen and Capriccio restaurant noises until very late at night and again early in the morning. Reception did move us to room 326 away from restaurant, but we were left stranded 2 hrs
Without a room for 2 hrs because the new room was not cleaned until 430 pm.
The hot water system is deficient, shower had to run for 10 minutes before getting hot water.
Only 1 of the 3 hot tub had functional water jet and water temperature was lukewarm, not hot.
Restaurant dinning service was very slow, and of spotty quality. The Tepanyaki beef,shrimp and chicken ordered did not come with any shrimp, and consisted of leftover beef and chicken fajitas from lunch. The breakfasts are much better than their dinner.
The staffs were very courteous and accommodating.

Resort is good. Food was ok. Staff was courteous. You have all the amenities mentioned. Beach is accessible and beautiful.
But, this is more of a hotel than resort. Definitely not 4 stars. Very deceiving about rooms as beach view rooms has balcony but only for standing, it is not a conventional balcony. It’s a half baked experience rather than a full scale resort experience. Food could be better. I booked it last minute but would have probably researched better before booking. Not entirely satisfied but we were active and took trip to isla and xcaret so our trip went well. Hotel (not resort) doesn’t deserve a 4 star for sure.

I understand that in July the seaweed level is high, but at least the hotel should clean up what ends up on the shore. All the noises of washing dishes coming from the kitchen could be heard in the room until after midnight. Smelling the aroma of cooking when you go to eat at a restaurant is normal, but not every time you leave your room at any time of the day.

Overall, we had a good stay at the resort, but there are definitely areas where improvement is needed—especially when it comes to staffing and service. It was clear the resort is significantly understaffed. The restaurants on-site were decent, but service was consistently slow, particularly at dinner. We often had to wait just to be seated, even when tables were visibly open.

It was disheartening to see the staff constantly rushing around, clearly overwhelmed and overworked. It reminded me of working conditions back in the U.S., where employees are stretched thin. The company really needs to invest in hiring more people and supporting their staff better.

One frustrating moment was during breakfast when a server claimed I never placed an order with her—even though I had. It felt dismissive and added to the sense that staff were stretched to their limits and trying to juggle too much at once.

The resort has great potential, but stronger leadership, better staffing, and more support for their employees could really elevate the guest experience.

This is a small resort. Only 202 rooms. Therefore activities are limited. There is only 3 restaurants. In the a'la carte restaurants there wasn't many vegetables or any fruit to choose from, just a few dishes had them. IMHO they could've used some different ideas for night time entertainment. They did have several good bands during our stay. They had activities for all ages. Even a playground for the kids. The food was delicious!! The staff were awesome! The place was very clean except for the pool. But, it was really windy when we stayed & I think it was the wind that blew most of the trash in. It is a 10 minute walk to a nice pharmacy. Another 5 minutes to their (flea market) with tons of souvenirs and jewelry. It is safe to walk around there, even at night! There was some seaweed but in pretty small quantities. Not the resort's fault. What was the resorts fault is they let it accumulate during the week to where it started getting smelly & thicker. One day whomever raked it folded it back into the sand. It makes the sand darker!!! Not a huge deal, but it matters to us. The ocean was beautiful with big waves. Red flag almost every day. One good thing about the wind, we didn't get hot! Lol The place is fairly quiet during the day. They do have music playing. It was a reasonable sound level except for a few times when they're having activities. The music gets louder. Would recommend if looking for smaller, quaint exceptional service & good food.

I would never stay at this property again. From January 6th to 11th, I booked Sunset Royal after an error with my reservation at LeBlanc, needing something nearby to stay close to family. Unfortunately, my experience was far below acceptable standards.

The lobby was underwhelming, with one small bar, a basic pool view, and open doors 24/7, making the area uncomfortably warm. A musty smell permeated the air, and the ceilings were visibly dirty, suggesting poor maintenance. The check-in process was frustrating. Despite my confirmed reservation, the staff claimed they had not received my itinerary. On top of that, I was forced to pay a $10 USD nightly fee, not listed anywhere prior, before receiving my bracelet or room key.

My room smelled strongly of mold and mildew, with stained bed linens and towels, and vents covered in dust and mold. After a few nights, I requested a room change, but the new room had the same issues. When I complained, staff sprayed the vents with fragrance rather than addressing the root problem.

The food quality was abysmal, worse than fast food, with poorly cooked dishes and limited options. I became ill from the food, and when I requested a doctor, I was told it would cost $200 USD. The mold and food issues left me lethargic and unable to enjoy my vacation. Although I contacted Expedia, the hotel staff failed to address my concerns.

This was one of the worst experiences in my travels. I strongly advise avoiding this property.

They assigned me a room in front of the pool and right next to 1 of the restaurants, during the day until 6pm there was extremely loud noise due to the activities at the pool, and late at night around midnight because of the people dinning at the restaurant. Also early in the morning (5-5am) I could hear the music from the restaurant that started serving breakfast. The room had a moldy smell, and the food lacked flavor, the drinks at the bar were not good either. The staff working at the kitchen preparing meals was very nice and the waiters were very friendly and nice. I would qualify this hotel as a 3 stars max.

First off the beach is great... but the property needs a lot of work. The food and beverage part of the hotel needs to scrap everything and start over. The Italian restaurant lunches served the most mediocre cuts of meat and pork. The burger was a flat paddy and I'm not sure what it was made out of. Service is bad outside the hotel on the patio by the pool and on the beach, I waited for an hour for drinks at the pool even though the pool was barely occupied. It's better to just go get the drinks instead of waiting. All of the rooms are surrounding the Italian restaurant, this means that when they are prepping for the days meals they are clanging pans, silverware, smallware's, etc. early in the morning and waking up guests. They play music loud enough throughout the day, which means early morning for breakfast and they quit around 11pm, if you want to sleep do not try that on the first few floors of this hotel. It is a terrible spot for a restaurant. They cater more to \"members\" and all-inclusive is not really all-inclusive here. And the bars are an afterthought... Like they don't want it to be a focal point of this hotel, so do not go here if you like real functional bars.
My room was nice, big and most of the utilities worked... But the hand-held shower faucets (3 each) didn't work in either shower (2 each).
The kitchen had cockroaches (I have pictures) and the room had some \"jumpy bugs\" that I had to keep squashing, the bed was comfortable, lights all worked fine.

The wait staff on the beach, especially Jose, was the best we have ever had and we have been to Cancun 25 times. All of the staff was wonderful which made this trip special. The beach is incredible and the rooms were remodeled nicely. Another big plus for me is that they had excellent decaffeinated coffee available at breakfast which is highly unusual anywhere in the Carribean, I usually settle for a packet of Sanka and hot water or bring my own and make it in the room. The live entertainment in the lobby nightly was also a nice touch.
The 2 negatives are the pool is small and taken over by children so we spent every day on the beach. The rooms are lovely and have a great view of the most beautiful ocean but they do not have actual balconies that you can sit on and enjoy your morning coffee and evening drink. The only balconies are on the lagoon side.

The amenities on this property were less than sub par. There was construction which meant lots of banging, the beds were very uncomfortable, the food, well let’s say that you could have eaten cardboard and it would have had more flavor. I will say that the staff was great at the property, one thing that we did not like was right after you check in you are told to complete the process by taking to additional staff and come to find out it was only to try and get you to buy into their time shares. We received phone calls to our room as well from them trying to sell us things. The view from our room was the best thing about this hotel and the beach was amazing as well, I will say that this was the first and absolute last time we will ever stay at this resort, if a resort is even what you should call it…

Location for this resort is great. Walking distance to the entertainment area. Staff was friendly. This resort is lacking some basic necessities such as dinner buffet. Only 2 nights is there a dinner buffet, the rest you have to wait to be seated and there can be a long wait to eat. No swim up bar and only 1 pool. Great entertainment and fun nightly shows for free. Don't be surprised by the high hotel fees and taxes upon arriving, much higher than the rest.

Terrible noisy coming from the kichen of the hotel restaurant almost from every midnight to morning, we have asked front desk, but nothing changes, can hardly sleep for even a single night during our 4 days stay, if anybody go there, avoid the ground level or maybe lower level rooms, too too too noisy.

We booked the Sunset Royal for our last night in Mexico, after 2 weeks of Tulum & Playa del Carmen. It was our first experience of a large all inclusive resort. It was pleasant, the room was epic & the food was abundant! It wouldn’t have been for us for a longer visit because it was v noisy in the day with mostly families & loud family ‘entertainment’/dance music by the pool (however, this might be what many people are looking for).

I almost like everything especially the entertainment @ night but it ends early@ 11 p.m. It would be nice If it ends @ 1 a.m. So with 0ne of the Restaurant .

My first time to travel to Cancun and i loved Sunset Royal Beach Resort Hotel... because of the staffs, very friendly and helpful especially Nicanor who always lent a hand to greet and help me during my whole stay. Special mention to the part of Entertainment group especially Victor, very energetic and the life of the events what the Hotel offers... thumbs up Victor... Me and my group really appreciates what you did for us and to the wedding of our dear friend, Charito and husband Rex... Thank you... Sunset Royal Beach Resort and Hotel...

My wife and I stayed for two nights at this hotel after our flight was delayed for a few days.

Pros: Nice beach, great waves, rooms are big and have a kitchenette

Cons: Food is not good, I don't know how to describe it, but it's really bland and there is very little variety. My wife is a vegetarian and there was almost nothing for her to eat. The atmosphere inside the hotel is weird. It has a very old feeling. The restaurant in the center of the hotel felt more like a dining room at an old age home. The outdoor dining area was right beside the only pool, which was FULL of kids...from open to close...full of kids.

One thing to keep in mind is that this is an RCI hotel...meaning that most of the people who are staying there have a RCI timeshare and have traded time or points or whatever they do to stay at that hotel.

If you are staying here as and RCI member, traveling with kids and planning on making a lot of your own meals in your room, this place might be ok. Otherwise, I would not recommend staying at this hotel...
