What did go well actually! First room they checked me in the locker was broken, second one smelled sooo bad and the pillow and sheets were on the bed and used(not in locker), third room smelled even worse and the toulet was filthy I almost threw up in the room! Then the only option left for me was to pay around 16 Euros as suggested by the receptionist to get a different room! Worse experience I have ever had in my life, never again to stay at Generator Hamburg

5 min walk from Hamburg Central bus & train stations. Super clean, super freindly. Twin room was great, private bathroom a bit on small size if a big unit. Location great for getting about, but given where it is, can be a little noisy and on the rough side (had no issues but could be a bit intimidating for those not used to inner city going ons). Bar on site was great, super helpful staff, would definitely stay again

Convenient but had some issues

My stay was alright. I would probably stay here again because the location was super convenient and the beds were comfortable, but there were a few things that definitely bothered me.

For starters, the window in the room was locked and all six of us had a hard time sleeping because of the humidity. We told reception about it, but the second time, they said they didn’t have a key and couldn’t do anything. We found a fan in the corner of the room and put it on the highest setting, but it didn’t help since there was nowhere for the hot air to go. The next day, housekeeping came in and unlocked it after they walked in and immediately noticed how hot the room was.

Another thing was I stayed for three nights, and I’m pretty sure the shower was only cleaned one time. It wouldn’t have bothered me as much if I had room to shower and not brush up against the walls any time I moved. However, the shower and the toilet were both tiny, like portable units they just set in the room? They do have a single communal bathroom on each floor with a larger shower (which they don’t tell you about), but I had to use one on a different floor because mine was closed for construction.

Also this is minor, but they definitely don’t update their event posters hanging outside the elevators on the ground floor (just around the corner from reception). Don’t expect there to be any events or specials in the bar as advertised because none of the staff had any clue what I meant when I asked about the poser.

This hostel is right next to the train station so it’s very convenient for travel. The area is a little chaotic but very typical for areas around train stations. The room was clean, the beds were comfy, and the facilities were decent. Was able to utilize the laundry room and the bar area. The bathroom was super tiny and smelled a bit like sewage but totally fine for a night or two. There is a popular shopping area nearby and we were able to visit the Christmas markets.

部屋もきれいだし、シャワー/トイレは各部屋ごとだしで、基本的には不満はありませんでした。
外がうるさいとのレビューがありましたが、部屋によるかもしれません。
僕が泊まった6階の部屋は特にうるさいと感じませんでした。
一方で、ホステル付近はイスラム系の人々が集まる繁華街が近いため、2階、3階とかだとうるさく感じるかもしれません。
ランドリーは一応あるには有りました。
洗濯、乾燥でそれぞれ5€とのことでした。
キッチンは無いので、ご飯は外から調達するしかありません。

Perfect for 1 night stay

The Generator hostel is across the road from the train station which was very convenient for us. Check in was slow as there we many people checking in at the same time, rooms are small but clean, bathroom is tiny but still useable. Breakfast was 9 euro, there are laundry facilities for 6 euro. There are plenty of restaurants within a 10 minute walk. For our 1 night stay this hostel is perfect

It’s so f*** hot in this place, it’s almost impossible to sleep. Also, they booked me, solo-traveling female who arrived late at night, in a room with four men. And no, there was no all-female dorm available, other wise I would have booked it. And no, the hostel wasn’t full - so they could have booked me in either an empty dorm or one that had at least one other woman.

This was one of the easiest hostel experiences I've ever had. The building is in the heart of the city, right next to the bus stop and the train station. Check-in was an absolute breeze, and the people at the desk were very friendly and able to answer any questions. There is an elevator, and the room was large and spacious. The bathroom was very clean, I had a great view of the street. The only downside is that it's a 45 min walk down to the marina. Other than that, highly recommend.

The hostel is located very conveniently near the main train station.
We had a quadruple private room, which had 2 bunk beds and a small bathroom. The shower was tiny and the room was small.
The beds were surprisingly comfortable with all bedding included. It was fine for 1 night as we were passing through Hamburg, but I would not recommend it for a family for longer than that.
Things to note - Towels are not included and cost EU5 ea to hire. You can store luggage in their lockers, which take coins only and was EU4 for 6hrs.

Overall Generator is a good stay for the money, clean rooms and a decent size, with amenities you’d need. There are a few set backs however.

Mainly it’s a hostile for kids, and they check in and out by the masses. So the front desk is nearly always busy and if you don’t want to wait on a long line you’re better off figuring things out yourself. I was at the hotel for 8 days and they don’t clean the rooms, even when I asked the cleaners on my floor. They said they only clean when there is a check out, otherwise I have to speak to the front desk, and I already described how long that takes. They also have only 2 small elevators for hundreds, possibly a thousand guests. The area directly outside isn’t great. It is however, super convenient because all the trains you can need are across the street.

A good stay, but not perfect.

The 6 bedroom room looks a lot smaller than the pictures online.

I was there end of June, the room was very warm, no AC, with a loud fan to fresh a bit.

The mattress, pillow and bedsheets were nice and clean. No stains, no bedbugs, no weird smells.

The bedroom had the convenience of having it’s own door with a shower and another door with a toilet, but it was the size as an airplane’s toilet, imagine taking a shower in it, i’m fit,1,75m tall and it was very unpleasant to shower, to move around and dry myself, i wonder how bigger people than me can use it. Maybe bigger showers outside the room wouldn’t be that bad.

All people at the reception were super friendly and helpful, but i was unlucky to get one in a bad mood who was very rude to me, but i believe it was an isolated situation.

The block where the hostel is has lot’s of homeless and junkies around what gave me (and other guests i talked to) a feeling of “not safe!”, but i was told that they are not dangerous, not pickpocketing, so i relaxed and found out that the location is very nice actually and easy to go everywhere from there. Plus the main train/bus station are right next to it and it’s great to arrive and just go across the street with your luggages and you’re done.

Supermarket, drugstore and places to eat, all across the street at the main station.

I chose this Hostel mostly because of the price and location, and i would stay there again if i’m on a budget.

Was able to check in late at night (around 11pm) with no issues. Room was clean, bed was clean and comfortable. I had booked a bed in a 6-bed women´s-only room which I got. Felt safe during my entire stay. Location is very convenient, just a couple minutes by foot to central station. I also liked that I could put my luggage in a locker for up to 24h after checking out.
IIt was a bit noisy at night, but that´s to be expected, given the location so I didn´t really mind. Overall, would stay here again and recommend it to others.

The hostel staff was great. I have no issues with them. It was the rooms and elevator I have problems with. The rooms, bunk beds and washclosets were too small, and the elevators were slow. I also felt uneasy sharing the room with women, but mostly cuz there wasnt much privacy. Im a middle aged disabled American sharing a room with young European women.

I recently stayed at another Hamburg hostel, and the rooms, wash closets, and bunk beds were more spacious. And all men shared the rooms. The elevators were a little faster also.

Overall the main positive point of this place is the location, which is super close to the Hamburg main train station.

The whole stay was ruined by the absolute chaos that went on each evening for 3-nights in a row, with teenagers and drunks running through the hallways, shouting, screaming, smashing doors for hours. Basically the Staff, are nice people but have no control or authority, so it was just a madhouse.

Horrible service, and awful breakfast! This place might be tolerable if you’re an 18yo back-packer; but if you’re not - PLEASE skip it!

They never made-up my room after 3 days, and when I complained in the morning - nothing! Then late in the evening someone just opens my door with their key card and say they’re here to check the room to see if it was made!

The front desk is absolutely horrible, when they talk to the customers it feels like their are doing you a favor: horrible!

The only bright sport was the guy from Brazil - which actually was very helpful and friendly: promote him to manager please and let go of all the other useless staff there please!

The elevators are slow and we got stuck in one of them. There’s only one shower per room of 8 and the showers themself have barely any pressure - that was very annoying. В общем, взял 6-местную комнату заранее, не ошибся. Немного дороже 8-местной, зато никаких бомжей/алкашей и прочих бедолаг. Если по-порядку:
1. Wi-Fi отстой, еле работал в комнате, чуть лучше работал в лобби/холле
2. туалет и душ раздельные, но настолько тесные, ни развернуться, ни руку поднять
3. Для того, чтобы держать вещи в сохранности вам нужно купить мини бля*ь замок. Это вообще не шутка, я вот купил за 4 евро возле хостела, сейчас не знаю куда его деть.
4. Весьма шумно от окон, но я жил на дальней кровати и мне не мешало. Если у вас чуткий сон, вам может быть некомфортно
5. Рядом вокзал, район вообще интересный...
Немцев вы увидите только в радиусе 2-3 километров от хостела)) держите руки на карманах
6. клевый бар, цены сравнительно невысокие
7. на стойке можете приобрести всё: полотенца, шампуни и прочее
В целом, своих денег не стоит, очень печальный хостел
наверное, советую переплатить 5-20 евро и взять что-то чуть дороже

Great location. Posted rule about no food /drink in rooms is not enforced. I checked in immediately after my room was 'cleaned' and found food spilled on the floor as well as open bags of snacks and produce on every available surface.

Generator Hostel is very conveniently situated for travel connections, sight-seeing, shopping and eating. The staff are friendly and helpful and my dorm-room was easily located with a lift to all floors. Lockers in the rooms and in the main lobby are also very convenient.

Rooms were too small and tight, hard to move around with 6 bed and everyone with their stuff. Bathroom with shower and toilet extremely tight. Front desk for 2 males were not very friendly. Never told me about the 6 euros needed for the towel (I brought my own) and never asked me if i wanted breakfast. They just checked me in without even really caring about me because they didn't even look at me. Just handed me my room key and thats it. I even asked for a bottom bunk since i stayed for 2 nights and was told they were all full. Later i noticed 2 bottom bunks had girls that only stayed 1 night so they could have easily moved them to a top bunk and me to a bottom bunk. Ladies that helped me with my plane ticket to print were very nice. Location is good next to train station and free walking tour is picked up at 10:30am on time. Other then that, avoid at all costs.

Checkin was late although I went there at 2, the room wasn't ready. They took a long time at the check-in counter. When asked for a change of room, they made me wait for a long time before they can arrange the room. The staff weren't customer friendly. No AC in Room ...Windows can't be open and had to keep the Room door open.

Convenient chaos - female solo traveller

The check in session is a chaos and bunk wasnt ready. The first recep handling my check in - Iman pull me on hold. After an hour the bunk is still not ready. The second recep manage to search and found another bunk. The rooms is spacious for 6 bunker. But the toilet is narrow due to space contraint. And brushing your teeth in the toilet basin is impossible. Use the common washroom down the corridor highly advise but there is no shelf to put toiletries. Bring your own flask if you need to make hot water in room there is no kitchen. Outside food not allow

Excellent location opposite the main train station although it can be noisy if your in a street-facing room. The shower/washing cubicles in the dorm-rooms are INSANE - there's hardly enough space to turn-around let alone shower or wash. Breakfast is excellent as is everything else apart from washing facilities as mentioned.

This was a nice one-night stay in Hamburg. We stayed in a private double room, which was pretty nice for a hostel. Staff were also very helpful and friendly. It was however a Friday night, and there was constant door opening and closing and people coming and going throughout the night. We also had to pay 6€ for the locker for our bags the next day - I understand it being a hostel, they can't keep everyone's bags, but it's not a cheap stay, we paid as much for our room as we would have in a hotel, so it would have been nice to not have to pay extra as well. It's still cheaper than the train station though!

Very central location, across the street from the train station. Great amenities, lobby and bar. 6-person mixed dorm was spacious and clean. The surrounding area is not safe at night because of its location across from the train station.

Double bed?

Very niosey 1st night. Much better later. Room was very compact. Although we asked for a double bed, as stated on receipt, had two singles pushed together. Very convenient location.

Convinient location in this \"Beatles\" hotel

The Generator Hostel is in a very grand, rather pleasant looking red bricked building known as The Klockmann House. In this building in 1960 was the \"Akustik Studios\", a place where you could record and cut your own 7\" vinyl in one session! The Beatles recorded at Akustik studios in Hamburg in 1960. The building is next to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and from departing the plane, a short walk to the SBahn, a 35 minute journey and you literally walk out of the Hauptbahnhof station and you are there.
Initially I visited the building with a friend as part of a Beatles tourist trip and was pleasantly surprised, the place is friendly and \"buzzing\".
I took the family for a Hamburg break and we stayed in the hostel for a night which cost £120 but I paid an extra £17 so that we could stay in the room until 1PM - we wanted a lie-in!!
You cannot beat the convinient location of this hostel, and of course it has BEATLES value! The bar is pretty good as well!

The hostel was super hip and exciting! The front desk people are really knowledgeable and helpful. I loved everything about the hostel except for the room and the bathroom. The bathrooms lacked hand soap and were smelly. The room was nice however there was a very foul smell and it made it difficult to be in the room. Overall the experience was positive but I wish that I didn't have to deal with those issues

Location, Atmosphere, Style

We (a early 20's couple) visited Hamburg for 3 nights before Christmas and wren't bothered about 'luxury' we just want somewhere to sleep so we booked in the private room.

The location was incredible, you are right outside the main train station in Hamburg, and within walking distance to the Town hall and shopping centre. So much closer to everything than we first thought.

The room was basic and the bathroom is a bit like a train toiler, but it does the job, is clean and honestly the bedding was so comfy!

The staff were so lovely and the bar downstairs is great and not rip off prices. We would have drinks both before we would leave in the evenings and a few when we returned before going up to bed and with great choice.
I very rarely leave reviews but I loved this place and definitely going to be looking for generator hostels in other cities I visit in the future.

You get what you pay for.

If you pay a third the cost of a decent hotel, you get a third the quality. Simple math.

Upside: bed was much more comfortable than most hostels and the bat downstairs was cool.

Downside: one of my nights was ruined by a heard of young teenagers litterly running up and down the halls until 1am and back at it at 7am. I complained to the front desk and they said they'd send someone, but never did. I complained again at checkout and they gave me a free espresso which was nice.

It really felt more like a cheap hotel and not a hostel, but that's just me.

I'd recommend staying some place else that doesn't allow children.

Just disappointing started with something left in the toilet and then with no shower working. Staff where ok but very unapproachable like ‘too busy to talk to us’ when asking for directions.
