The heat didn’t work - I asked three times to change rooms or have it fixed and was told to wait and that it’s an old building- well I waited for two days and then I had to check out. The staff are sweet but its not acceptable to ask someone to stay in a room with no heat in the winter. Other than that - a toilet in the middle of the room and the constant slam of hallway doors made for one expensive, plastic prison cell. Except in prison they give you a drinking cup - not here though.

While it is not in the city centre, I would recommend this hotel to anyone, as it is well connected, affordable, clean, cool, and has extremely convenient amenities. My flight was canceled and I needed a place to stay last minute around midnight. This worked out perfectly with easy airport connections. Check-in and check-out were very fast and easy. Clean room, extremely comfortable bed, and a nice dark room for sleeping.

The room is not spacious at all. Poor design, no circulation or ventilation, can only access the bed from 1 side, no privacy, no space, can clearly see whoever is in the shower or using the toilet. Wouldn't recommend this hotel.

Overall very good if you are a solo traveler. Room pretty clean, bed is very comfortable, thermostat easy to control via iPad. TV was a bit weird to control via iPad, sometimes it wouldn’t work or there was a lag. I wiped a little dust off the desk and bathroom shelves. Friendly, helpful staff. Location was very convenient for public transportation. Assisted self-check-in was simple. Shared spaces in the lobby were very nice. Great to grab drinking water from lobby.
I really didn’t like: 1) the lack of privacy by using a glass shower with curtains that are basically see-thru, and toilet incorporated into the room—really only good for individual travelers or a couple that is okay with this setup. 2) there was black mold in the shower door tracks both above and below. 3) whenever you use the sink water splashes out even being very careful, so you have to wipe it up to avoid tracking dirt and dust all around the room. 4) the room is quite small so if you have anything more than a carryon suitcase there’s not room to open your luggage, also very minimal hanger space. 5) safe in my room didn’t work, 6) whenever I entered the room the window blinds would automatically open, which I found annoying bc I would have to close them again.

Right out of the gate the staff is attentive. Easy check-in and clean room. Cozy? Great bed. The overly designed room is functional, clever and funny. The mix of The Jetson's and A Clockwork Orange make for lots of fun and something to talk about. The humor is the banging toilet seat. Most 21st century homes now have slow close toilet seats. Having such and old school toilet seat is such an over-the-top futuristic room may be a designers gag.

Easy to get to from the train station, warm welcome when we arrived by knowledgeable and friendly staff, cool style and decoration, well serviced, clean room with modern technology. Only downside was the toilet having doors that you had to pull around in the middle of the room which doesnt provide privacy and no way to peacefully go to the toilet and not wake the other person.

Fantastic property and 100% recommend!! Room was great and we liked the ipad controlling the lights and blinds. The hotel itself is a great deisgn and is very clean. Sparkling or still water on tap by the bar. They made our anniversary VERY special which has made it so memorable. Perfect location to central Amsterdam - 1 hour walk or very easy access via metro train or tram. Lovely area and we will be back in future.

Great location if you want to been the south of the city - very close to the Amsterdam South train station. Overall, a nice clean hotel ideal for business travel with short stays. Only downside was that there was just 1 member of staff at the bar and took a very long time to get served. Its a shame you cannot order food to your room.

The room was quite fascinating as a smart room and its features were exciting. The bed was a good size and very comfortable. The bedrooms felt like there could have been a bit of a deeper clean especially on surfaces and the floor and the shower did drip continuously which was quite loud during the nights which woke us up annoyingly, the tv was also quite difficult to connect to apps and didn’t work so well connecting, but the staff were above and beyond helpful!

Positives. Helpful and pleasant staff. Less than 10 minutes walk in nice neighborhood from Amsterdam Zuid train and metro station. Bed is comfy and room is functional. Quiet. Blackout drapes. The negatives are the weirdness of all CitizenM hotels. The bed is up against the window so one person needs to climb over the other one in bed. No kettle or coffee service. Limited privacy with a pull curtain between the bedroom and separate toilet room and shower. Restaurants within 10 minute walk. For us for 2 nights it worked - great price compared to central hotels and easy train access to Schiphol.

However, Rooms are extremely small for 2 people, and the bathrooms are part of the room space itself. Toilet and shower are within glass pods and mostly in the way. Location was great - 15 minute tram ride to the Van Gogh / Rijksmuseum, 20 minute metro ride to Centraal Station, near a busy commercial street with options for restaurants, cafes, and parks. The service was excellent and I felt right at home.
If you're debating between staying in the Canal Ring vs. a little more on the outskirts, I recommend staying at citizen M - you get a better feel for daily Dutch life and the area is safer and not as touristy.

However, a few things to flag: the shower rim needed more thorough cleaning, and the design meant you couldn’t avoid a burst of cold water when turning it on. Chromecast wasn’t working during my stay, and the daily room cleaning policy wasn’t clear — guests need to request it if needed.

Citizen is generally a good option: convenience and nice food. Our experience however was through the lens of traveling with a service animal. Knowing that staff often is not familiar with service animals, we handed over documentation and inquired about specific rules the hotel may have. This went well. The receptionist went out of his way of sharing a photo of my daughter with her dog with colleagues. However, the next day my daughter overheard breakfast staff discussing merits of her service dog because it was neither a certain breed and too small in their opinion. She was standing in front of them but they hadnt recognized her. Talking in public about guests is never a good idea, and service animals come in different shapes and sizes. She told the staff members that, but it was an uncomfortable moment. People with service animals rely on their helpers for a reason, travel could be easier if staff was better trained on how to act in a respectful way in these situations.

The hotel is close to trams and Amsterdam Zuid station which is convenient to go you destination and Centraal. There is no laundry facility though so the nearest place to do the laundry is at De Pjip station. But overall I would give it a 5 star rating.

I was supposed to stay there for two days but I had an emergency and I couldn’t make it there on time. I explained my situation and they worked things out with me.
