To be honest, this place was not great. When checking in, the staff was unfriendly and not helpful (though it may just be this one guy and we got unlucky). The rooms are as small as the pictures show, so don’t be surprised. Tv didnt work, but water pressure is actually decent. Didn’t get new towels / room service in the four days we stayed despite asking and putting the sign up. Location is okay, plenty or restaurants, shops, and beaches nearby, but nothing special when every other hotel has the exact same stuff. No breakfast but they atleast provide some coffee. Overall, its not great for the price. I’ve stayed in nicer hostels for a fourth of the price, and this place did not add to my trip experience at all (in fact arguably made it worse). If you are looking at a place purely to store your luggage and sleep at, then this works but there are cheaper options. Not good, but not awful either.

Appreciate the alleged upgrade. Not happy to be notified the day of. It required me paying two taxi fares.
Cannot say much about Canario…the lobby area is cramped and needs a deep cleaning. Glad they held the luggage; but need a more secure designated area. For a quick stay, I guess it be ok.

I loved staying at Canario. It is a lovely historic building, with lots of character, snuggled between more modern condos, and many restaraunts and boutique shops in the hip Condado neighborhood. The clean beach was just a block away and the water was great to swim in. The staff were friendly and the beds were comfortable. The rooms weren't ideally furnished, and I was glad to have a room wit 2 full beds even though we were a couple traveling together, in order to give us some space to stretch out and put our belongings. I love supporting these kind of smaller hotels and encouraging others to stay here!

Parts of our stay were better than others. Our check in was not smooth, for while we were able to leave our bags to go eat, we were supposed to be called when the room was ready at 3:00. That never happened, so when we came back closer to 4:00 and were hurriedly checked in, we discovered that some of the things in the room were not cleaned or turned over. The older gentlemen on staff at that time sprang into action to help us, but it was clear they were not prepared for us. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. The listing specified a rooftop seating area, but that wasn't really an accessible thing. The beds were comfortable, the AC worked well; not much water pressure in the shower, but the water stayed consistently hot. We were safe, staff were friendly, and the room stayed cool, bathroom worked. Ultimately, this does not rise to the level of \"boutique hotel\" that we have stayed in in other areas.

I’ll start by saying the staff was absolutely AMAZING and extremely attentive. Every interaction we had was pleasant, and they truly went above and beyond — they all deserve 5 stars!

That said, the hotel itself could use some TLC. One important thing to note is that there is no elevator. I believe this may be mentioned somewhere, but I wanted to highlight it for older guests or anyone with mobility concerns. Carrying luggage up three flights of stairs is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Another downside was the shower in our room. We booked a King room, but our shower was literally built into what felt like a closet — very small and not what we expected. Interestingly, our friends also had a King room, but their bathroom was completely different and had a standard-sized shower. So it seems room layouts vary quite a bit.

Overall, the staff made the stay enjoyable, but there are a few things future guests may want to keep in mind when booking.

I had a very disappointing stay at this hotel. The WiFi did not work in the room at all, which made it extremely inconvenient. The room itself was not clean upon arrival, and housekeeping only made the bed but did not clean the bathroom or properly service the room. Cleanliness overall was far below acceptable standards.

Additionally, the staff was unfriendly and not helpful when issues were raised. Another major drawback is that the hotel does not have an elevator, which was very inconvenient, especially with luggage.

Overall, the experience was not good, and I’m honestly surprised that I didn’t see these issues mentioned in previous reviews, which makes me question how accurate or genuine they are. I would not stay here again.

I've stayed here twice, once on my own waiting for a morning flight to the BVI in 2024 and again with my wife in February 2026 for 2 nights at the begining of our trip around Puerto Rico. I don't think the bad reviews I've read are deserved. This is a more budget freindly option in the same great location as some of the premium hotels. The location is fantastic with a lot of dining and entertainment options within walking distance. It's also a short inexpensive Uber ride to Old San Juan with a lot to do and see there. Canario staff were freindly and accomodating. Daniel who checked us in and got us in our room before regular check in time had several suggestions for places to get a great seafood dinner. The rooms are smaller than your typical chain but when we visit we don't spend a lot of time in our room. But the room did have everything you need as well as a shared kitchen you could use where there was hot coffee in the morning and a really nice quite courtyard to enjoy in the morning and at the end of the day. This will be our go to in San Juan.

Staff was awesome, place is nice and cozy. Just know your expectations and what you’re getting. Good value for what/where you’re staying. My room was ok for me (single traveler), two people would have been kind of small, room/bathroom were clean but on the small side especially shower area, I’m 5’10” 210lbs and it was on the small side. All was ok but biggest issue was my room mini fridge did not work, it was replaced on 2day and was also not working. They do plan on replacing it but that was after my visit so didn’t have a cooler during my entire stay. They did offer use of their downstairs unit but kinda hard to go up and down to pull items/drinks outside of your room. Again the staff was great but had to give honest review. Thanks

We walked until we found it and employee walked us back. At least a 1/2 dozen people waiting to check in and she checked them in 1 st. No outlets in bathroom. It says pool ,but we did not see one

Quaint, older boutique hotel in a vibrant neighborhood. Small but served our purpose for 1 short night before a cruise. Very clean and comfortable. Got in late so needed to call the phone number to be let in, but helpful staff. Hot room, wish the AC had been turned on, we needed to figure it out. Found out in the morning that they have an adorable outdoor atrium and a kitchenette with fresh coffee and a water cooler. Safe, locked front door, could leave our luggage in the lobby until we were ready to leave for the ship.

I am giving Canario 5 stars because I love the imperfection and quirkiness of a small inn in an old property hosted by lovely people who are personable and caring. That is what you will find at Canario. Is it perfect and new? No. But it is clean, comfortable and safe, in a great location, and it is reasonably priced as well. Friendly and helpful staff, very comfortable bed, good coffee and filtered water in the communal kitchen. Would definitely stay here again.

Great food and drinks at Burrito Social just up the street!

We were there 4 nights and not once did housekeeping come in except to leave 2 extra towels and did not take the dirty ones
The very worst part of the stay was that we were told not to flush the toilet paper yet the garbage can was never emptied, we had to do it ourselves by dumping in the courtyard garbage, absolutely disgusting!!!
Do not waste your money on this property or their other property, Casa del Caribe, we stayed in both and both were beyond terrible! I have stayed in 100s of hotels and these two are on the top worst!

Everything 1) Staff too busy talking with friends and ignored customers 2) check in took 45 minutes with only 2 people in front of me 3) Pictures very misleading....is really an old, rundown budget hotel 4) extremely noisy....little traffic on the street during the day (it was a Sunday), but at about 5 PM the street was bumper-to- bumper for hours with many noisy cars/trucks with loud exhausts and groups of very loud motorcycles cruising the street until 11:30 PM.......then the roosters started crowing at 3:25 AM 5) bathroom was tiny and cramped, and water in shower took more than 10 minutes running to get hot...and we had a larger bathroom on the cruise ship we just got off (and it was tiny) 6) and we paid for an upgraded room, and it was still bad.....Doors didn't fit and were squeaky when opened and floor corners and edges were very dirty

I think the hotel was good for what I used it for, A place to sleep & shower. I did the standard room, it was tiny for a solo traveler, can’t imagine it with another person. The shower water would go from hot to very hot, annoying but manageable. Room was clean. Shower was clean. AC was strong. The front desk were friendly and offered advice when asked. Great location. They provided beach towels and you have access to their sister hotels pool. They have a water filter in the common kitchen area & offer free coffee in the morning. Based on location, I would go back.

The location, affordability, and overall condition of this boutique hotel on Condado Beach are all awesome. The room decor was nice, but there are some areas to improve. There were no storage or shelving options in the bathroom for personal items. We had to go downstairs twice to get a working physical key for the room. However, the air conditioning was great and made the room temperature very comfortable.

The main issues we had during our recent two nights day in January 2026 pertain to the non-functioning smart TV (it never connected to the Internet and we never received assistance to fix it), toilet issues which thankfully resolved themselves, but which were never addressed directly by staff, and overall low water pressure.

The staff in all other respects were welcoming and helpful, and we will definitely stay at The Canario again. Just hope they continue on upgrading their offerings when possible. Thank you.

Staff was very kind and let me leave my luggage before checkin. the hotel is so convenient to the beach and a lot of restaurants, absolute perfect location. I love that they keep the front door locked, so you feel your belongings are safe, and no one can just wander in. It’s not the most modern hotel, but the lobby sitting area and outdoor patio are wonderful. The outdoor patio is a great place to sit with a morning coffee, and my room had a 2 large windows and new bed/ mattress. Would definitely recommend for a fun easy vacation.

The room/bed was clean. But, the window screen was broken and the window itself partially open & wouldn’t close. The bathroom doorknob was very hard to use. There is no elevator so be prepared to walk up a narrow staircase and no porters.
That being said it is a very convenient location and friendly staff. It is very near the beach and restaurants, bars, etc. but, if you want to sleep before midnight, look elsewhere. Reasonable prices.

Staff were incredible, accommodated a very late check in, gave great recommendations on where to find affordable food/sundries. The hotel is loaded with charm, walls covered in oversized Chagall prints. We rented the Queen Superior room (#207)-the bed was soooo comfortable-firm yet soft. I way overslept because it was so great! The shower & baths were very small-built into what I expect were once closets (the actual door to the shower was a closet door!!) which added to the charm but would be terrible for a plus-sized traveler. Also-there is no elevator so you’re carrying your luggage up the stairs-request ground floor if you cannot do this. The outside patio area was perfect for our midnight snack hour. Everything was super clean. AC was cold, worked well. Door locks were a little wonky but they’re working on repairing. Aldo-no room safes present.
Perfect location with groceries, drug stores, and restaurants within a block.

Staff very friendly Cons: No elevator, low water pressure in the shower, lots of traffic noise if your room faces Ashford Ave. as ours did. The room was very clean but old. The lady that welcomed us was very nice and professional. The guy that checked us out was very accommodating as well since our flight didn’t leave for several hours after check out. The only issue we had was that the TV comes on but you can’t get any channels and it was late so we didn’t bother. Otherwise, it was a nice stay. I see a lot more potential if a little updating is done to the rooms. It’s a great little place.

When we arrived, the staff did not answer the bell. A guest coming in opened the door for us and the staff told us that we had to wait because he was on break. Another guest rang bell, we had to open because staff was on break. Terrible facilities, not clean, noisy. Will never go there again.

The room was great; the staff amazing. The only areas for improvement are safes in the rooms. There are safes but they don't have the keys. ?? Get some safes in the rooms please! Also, if you are on the top level, as I was, there are no elevators and you have to lug your bags upstairs. Other than those two items, I had a wonderful time and would stay there again.

When we returned from dinner to our room, the floor was covered in water and there were cockroaches crawling on the floor and walls. We called the front desk and their “sister hotel” approximately 10 times and received no response. We also went to the front desk in search of help, and finding it empty walked to the sister hotel to find it not a functioning hotel at all but an active construction site. With no help to be found and our room uninhabitable we were forced to book a room elsewhere for the night. We have requested a refund of our stay, and Canario indicated this needed to be handled through Expedia. Please contact me to arrange refund.

Room very small/ suppose to have had a PREMIUM QUEEN. Room was definitely NOT. Could feel springs in back. Horrible!! Sink falling off wall. Sink
