it’s very noisy if your room is just beside highway. I requested to move after 2 nights. and for the new room I found there was no bath towels and no soap. I requested from reception but unfortunately nobody gave me. breakfast was fair but not deserved. laundry was not good as my clothes still wet after 100 minutes drying. would not recommend.

Will not stay here again even it is not expensive

I don't like to leave negative review, but this is the worst hostel among the hostels I stayed in Europe, second worst in the world. A roommate who shared the same room told me it was his worst hostel he ever stayed.
The manager Joseph was not nice. He talked like a grumpy commander instead of as a host. Check-in was very slow. Dirty room.
I have never seen any hotel or hostel took such a long time to check in each guest. It was a chaos, over 20 people waiting in the line to check in.
When booking, I left a message to ask for a lower bed because my right leg has a problem, they still assigned me to an upper bed. But that bed was occupied by another guest already, actually the bed below was empty. I had to go back to the reception to ask them to assign me to the empty bed.
The floor was dirty. The sink by the shower drained very slowly.
I will not stay here again even it is not expensive.

Great for large groups sharing at a low price.

Me and a group of friends shared a 6 bed dorm for 3 nights. The room was not very big but it had everything that we needed. The beds were comfortable. The USB ports on the beds didn’t seem to work but we just used the power outlets instead so that wasn’t a huge issue. There were lockers in the room which can be used if you bring your own padlock. The bathroom was clean.
We did have an issue with a broken toilet seat but we told the front desk and they fixed it immediately without issue.
The location is great and it’s easy enough to navigate the city from this location.
Overall I think it was great for the price we paid.

Good value, paid $21 plus 0.76 cent at the spot. Warning must have a valid debit and credit card. For anyone seeking to run a proper hostel, check out this chain. They know what they are doing! I checked out late, no one gave me a hazzle. Will for sure stay again despite no queen bed or room service

Overall, my stay was good. My room and the common areas were rather chilly, probably owing to the loss of natural gas from Russia, but the situation did not cause any concern for me. My room and the common areas were clean, but the elevators could use some cleaning.
The breakfast buffet provides a good selection.

The property is within walking distance of the Hamburg Hbf and a U-Bahn station, making driving unnecessary.

I’ve stayed at many A&O’s, so kind of knew what to expect. This one however is terrible. Nothing was clean. The wall boards beside the bed were disgusting. Grease mark from someone’s body oil were smeared everywhere along with footprints and hand marks. I took one of the towels in the room and wiped everything down with hot water and soap. The towel literally turned black. I know it’s A&O and nobody staying here should expect luxury but this place is beyond filthy.

Economical stay in Hamburg/Hostel with bar/laundry

Arrived in February to Hamburg via Central Station HBF. It is a 12-14 min walk to Hostel. Normally, that is nothing, however when we arrived it was a little windy and raining a bit. We mainly walk, and we had to cross a busy highway, but it was doable. Just had to keep an eye on drivers, just like any other city. When we arrived to hostel, it was a bid Hotel/Hostel and there were many floors. Check-in took a few mins, there was another person in front of us, behind us there were others checking in as well. It seemed like a popular option for travelers. The building is an older building, the hallways were a little dated, and the elevator did show its age, however, the room was clean, sheets were crisp/ pillows were arranged. The room looked like in the pictures. The city of Hamburg was cold outside but the room had a heater that kept the room warm. One thing was we had a room with a view, and it faced a section of trains that are parked overnight, and there was an area where there was a river and once in a while you would hear boats making this sound (may be a European fog horn, but it did not sound like a normal US sound) once in a while. It did not bother us when we were awake, and we did not awake from it at night. At night, when we went out, we had to walk a few minutes to catch a bus. It was not far, but it was not right in front of the Hostel. I would walk about 3-5 mins to Spaldingstraße and wait for bus. Sometimes google maps would send me to the Central St.

They need more staff as I was waiting like 45 minutes to check in due to only one person in counter. Also the laundry does not work which is very inconvenient. There is a young man Taylor in the counter who needs more training as he does not take the time to give the appropriate directions to other places like the laundry.

I really felt there should be much bigger guest kitchen if you are hosting ppl for such a big number. The kitchen was just kept for namesake, it is too small and there nothing expect one induction stove and microwave.

There are no facility of drinking water on the floors, and you have come everytime down to reception to just get a tap drinking water..
You have to stand in the same long reception queue where receptionist handles the checkin and checkout...

The staff looks not that suppostive...

filthy — would never repeat or recommend

Absolutely everything on this property is filthy — one of the rooms had not been cleaned at all. Door was broken to the bathroom and no maintenance during the night available so how do use a public toilet in the basement multiple floors away. in the room, the trash and not been taken out with seven and hygiene products still there from the last group and trash and dust on everything. You have to make your own beds, and they give you a set of sheets, but the comforters are old and stained. The only positive of the entire place is availability of a decent washing machine and dryer. The lobby is crowded and the services poor… the elevator should not pass anybody’s inspection and even public areas such as the stairs are very filthy. You look out the window and see trash on every side and graffiti. Somehow a rather because of their price and the set up for groups they continue to be absolutely crowded and busy. I don’t know how because I can’t imagine anyone repeating!

Reception was friendly and the place was CLEAN. That's not standard anymore for hostels. The bunk bed was kinda like a cabin or kid's playhouse, so decent privacy for a 6-bed dorm. Shower was hot with good pressure, shower gel provided. Didn't have food there, but grabbed a map and got excellent tips from reception staff for jogging routes and must-sees.

I was aware I was booking a cheap hostel but the dirtiness of the common areas was really shocking. It seemed like they haven’t cleaned the floor of the elevator since they opened the hostel. There is also a bathroom in the bottom floor that was truly disgusting. We are in December so you expect a warm lobby where you can chill if you don’t want to be in your room, but this wasn’t the case since the lobby was extremely cold at all times.
I wouldn’t come back, not even with the low prices offered.

I was asked whether I had a breakfast token on the first morning at breakfast. I wasn't given one at check-in, so, my response was 'no'. I had to leave my food and follow the person to reception for them to confirm breakfast was included in the room rate. Merely assuming I was at fault has put me off from booking at an A&O again.

We arrived and had to wait 45 minutes for someone to come and check us in, than we went up to the room to find no sheets in the bed. I went downstairs to let them know and they gave me sheets to do the beds myself… I went back up to do so and when I turned around one of the blankets there was vomit all over it. I went back down again and the reaction was “ that happens sometimes” like it was a normal thing. Than there where also 2 homeless guys coming into the lobby to search through the trash cans and none of the staff said anything. Terrible experience!

A very typical A&O hostel

A very typical A&O hostel, though it was a bit further away from the HBf than most other A&O hostels.
I had to move rooms while I was there and while the first room was large and spacious, the second one was slightly cramped. So, your mileage may vary.
The lift doors are slightly fiddly to open and some of them are quite stiff and you may require both your arms free to open some of them.
Cleanliness in the rooms was good. There was a bit of a crisis in the guest kitchen when the refrigerator defrosted and the floor was flooded, but the night team dealt with it promptly.

Clean place to stay, with helpful staff

Spacious clean rooms, though the walls are a bit too thin (one can hear conversations in the next door room a little too clearly) and the toilet and shower area can be a bit too small for a large person (so one is always bumping into the walls/taps, etc).
The lift doors can require some upper body strength to operate.
But, the place is clean and the staff are very helpful.

I wasn't thrilled with the state of this place - to the point that I preferred to stay elsewhere even if my reservation was non-refundable. The common areas do not look like the pictures at all. The pictures make it seem like the areas are spacious and well-lighted, while in reality, everything looked gloomy and unclean. Areas like the stairs/elevators didn't look well cared for either, the carpets were dirty as well. The room was clean but it didn't look nearly as spacious/fresh as in the photo (I understand these are taken with a wide lens, but still). While I get that the place is a part hotel, part hostel, I wasn't very keen on resting and working remotely while the people staying in the room next to me were blasting loud music through the afternoon.

In short, it's probably not a bad place given the cost, if you book with the right idea about it. It wasn't what I was looking for at all.

On check-in, the staff member told us that we could simply order the lunch bags during breakfast the next day. However, at breakfast the next day, the staff member at the reception told us we had to pre-order it, so we weren't able to have those lunches after all.

Meh for the price.

The 6 person dorm I was in was full of the trash of the other 5 people, who were clearly a group. They would also make a lot of noise when coming into the room after staying out until the bars close (4 am in Germany). The room was also rather hot because the curtain rod was hung on the ceiling so it was not possible to open the window very much. It was cheap though so this is a mitigating factor for me.

Th A&o is more or less a hostel, wit a few actual hotel rooms. Most of the occupants are teenagers on field trips, staying in dorms- style rooms there. Hence the bare bones style of the establishment, its a private room with tv and private bathroom, but its a long shot from an actual hotel experience. It's not bad for the money though

Clean and near-ish to the train, though a walk to city center (very doable). A decent price, but charged for the pool table and Foosball table which was a disappointment. Felt a bit nickled and dimed. But overall good value for money and in a bit quieter part of the city.

Went for a 3 night stay to watch two games of football and catch up with old friends in Hamburg. There was 2 of us and we booked a twin room but actually got a twin and a bunk bed so there was plenty of space! On arrival the room was very cold but simply turned on radiators and that was fine! Shower temperature was cool also first morning but still no great problem. The only other issue was we had a window with no curtains, we didn’t raise the issue with staff however so no grumbles there. There hotel itself insome areas could donwith a few updates but is spotlessly clean, reasonably priced and just 5-10 min walk to the station, all in all, happy

Affordable stay with downsides

The hotel as a whole is a very affordable outfit which also serves as a hostel. If you don't mind crowds of young people, dingy staircases, drafty windows, too short window curtains or a busy main road in front then the hotel is certainly worth its price. Room itself was totally fine and clean.

Close to the train station but that's about as good as it gets. We are a family of 4 and had a family room of two single beds sandwiched together and a set of bunk beds. The mattresses are thin and covered in plastic then a fitted thin sheet over the top. The kids beds where not made and this included no doona cover or pillow cases. When asked why the kids beds where not made they said you don't pay for the kids so we don't make their beds. Funny thing is you pay extra for a family room! The second day our beds where not made either. The hotel is on a very noisy main road and even on the third floor you can still hear all the noise from outside. To make it worse the room next door was being renovated. They started at 8am and went all day. One day we came back early and the workers next door had the music very loud and where sawing and banging for over an hour when all of a sudden my head stared banging against the wall where I was sitting in bed. I went next door and spoke to them and they nodded and before closing the door started laughing to each other. I mentioned it to the staff at reception. Their response was \"thanks for letting us know\". You can hear people throughout the night as you need to pull your door shut hard to close. The toilet separate from the shower is so tight you need to manoeuvre yourself between the basin and toilet to get in. Anyone large would not be able to fit. The shower head is so high in the shower water sprays over the top of the shower screen.

The name of the property implies that it is close to the main train station (Hauptbahnhof).Not really! It is about a EUR 7 taxi ride or a 20 minute walk with the need to cross very busy streets. The property sits in an industrial area with lots of traffic noise. When checking in expect lots of additional fees such as credit card fees, high speed internet fees, etc. To get on the free wifi, you have allow them to send you emails.

Many good things about this hostel e.g. Breakfast, private rooms for families but worth knowing it is on a very busy road which is noisy 24/7. Rooms can get warm in summer so you need to keep the windows open which may make sleep difficult for some.

First of all, I was handed a key for women's room. I did not realise that until one lady came in the room and politely told me that this room was for women. In that room, I found the bed bent downwards and about to collapse.
In the second room for both men and women, the doors for shower room was not shut properly, and young couples were hooking up.
Also, unexpected costs (e.g. payment with credit card, bet sheets) disappointed me.

It is a hostel pretending to be a hotel

I booked a single room and paid a price that you could have stayed at an chain express hotel instead. My single room was very oddly shaped and there were hairs on the pillow and bathroom floor. The room door opened and there was a stopper mounted on the floor about 10 cm away from the wall located where the bathroom door is, in the dark I stumbled into the door stopper, very stupidly located. My second day, after being out, and coming back to the room, the bed was not made, only the garbage was taken out and the bathroom floor mat folded. The next day the same, but there were things still in the toilet. I went to the front desk and they sent housekeeping to the room. I was informed that bed are not made, and they only empty the garbage and sweep the floors, no real cleaning. This is not a HOTEL, it is a Hostel.

Convenient but Dirty

I stayed at the A&O hostel recently with two of my children. The hostel was convenient to the Hauptbahnhof and the trains. So, convenient to most anywhere in Hamburg. Having never stayed at a hostel before, I was expecting basic accommodation and potential minor cleanliness issues. The room was basic but no serious cleanliness issues there. The shower, though, had mildew from top to bottom. We were there for three nights so I spoke to the desk each day asking for them to have it cleaned. When we returned at night, there was perhaps one ring cleaned. So, not a little back here or there in the corners, but literally polka dotted up the wall and pink everywhere. I showered with care not to touch anything and only had my children shower once. I seriously considered buying my own cleanser to clean it but kept hoping it would actually be cleaned appropriately. Never was.

I was surprised with how much the hostel offered, so in general it was okay but I would hesitate to recommend it without major caveats for the cleanliness of the bathroom. If the shower had been clean, it would be good value for money and a gem of a place to stay - but travelers beware.

I did say I would recommend it, but only as most people like inexpensive and convenient. I would, however, recommend that you bring your own shower cleanser or Clorox just in case.

Der var ekstremt koldt på værelset. Jeg var nødt til at sove med to lag tøj på, selvom jeg ellers plejer at kunne lide at det er lidt koldere. Derudover var sengene meget hårde og væggene meget tynde.

Wir waren seit 2012 öfters zu Gast im A&O und haben jeweils komplette 6er-Zimmer gebucht. Leider ist die Qualität des A&O nicht mehr in Ordnung. Beim aktuellen Aufenthalt mussten wir feststellen:

- Das Zimmer war sehr schmutzig und wurde ganz offensichtlich schon länger nur oberflächlich geputzt. Auf dem Handtuchheizkörper in der Dusche eine dicke Staubschicht auf jedem Element. Auf dem Türrahmen des Bads waren rote Flecken.
- Wir mussten die Betten selbst beziehen, was aufgrund deren Design beschwerlich und zeitaufwendig ist. Auf einem der ausgegebenen Bettbezüge waren rote Flecken, so dass wir um Umtausch baten. Ein gegen Gebühr ausgebenes Handtuch hatte schwarze Flecken.
- Das Zimmer war heruntergekommen. Einer der sechs Spinde war mit Schrauben permanent verschlossen. Die Betten im Zimmer hatten keinen Strom, so dass die Nachtlichter nicht funktionierten. Die Halterung des Duschkopfs war locker.
- Dem letzten Mitglied unserer Reisegruppe wurde an der Rezeption mitgeteilt, dass schon sechs Zutrittskarten ausgegeben worden seien und er deshalb keine mehr bekommen könne. Wir hatten aber bis dato nur fünf Personen eingecheckt und fünf Karten bekommen. Erst am Folgetag konnte er eine Zutrittskarte erhalten.
- Bezahlung der Kurtaxe vor Ort war nicht in bar möglich.

Klobrille war gebrochen, das Doppelstockbett nicht bezogen - mussten wir selber machen, fenster nicht dicht - daher war der Szraßenlärm sehr zu hören, das Gebäude ist sanierungsbedüftig - Aufzüge gerade so mit 4 Personen nutzbar und das ohne Gepäck

Det tog en time og 20 minutter og checke ind og receptionen havde ikke styr på noget og da vi så kom op på værelset så skulle man ned og hente sit sengetøj i receptionen igen

Værelset var noget slidt og hullede lagner. Der er meget lydt på hotellet, både ud til gangen og via vinduer som ikke er tætte.
Det ligger i et dødt område uden nogen butikker eller rigtige Spisesteder. 10-15 minutters gang til hovedbanegården og shopping/spisesteder. Men hvis man gerne vil bo forholdsvis billigt og sagtens kan gå, så er det fint.

Es war Günstig, war unser leitspruch im Zimmer.
Leider ging die lüftungsanlage in den Bedezimmer sehr lautstark und zu willkürlichen zeiten (auch mitten in der Nacht) an.
Die Fenster waren nicht kippbar sonder nur 1 Fester war entweder zu oder komplett auf nutzbar.
Es waren kaum Steckdosen vorhenden (2Stück für 6 Personen) dafür aber pro bett 2 USB, die leider nicht alle gut funktionierten.

Ansonsten war es eine gute und Solide Unterkunft

Unterkunft ist ok, aber buchen wir nie wieder

Um 23 Uhr ankommend, müde von der Reise, erfahren wir, dass das Hostel überbucht ist & wir daher in ein anderes Hostel untergebracht werden. Nach einem mühsamen hin- & her werden Taxis geordert. Das erste ist zu klein für 5 mit Gepäck. Anschl. werden 2 bestellt. Zahlen müssen wir es selber & können im neuen Hostel die Rückerstattung anfragen.. schlussendlich erreichen wir die Unterkunft weit nach 24 Uhr. Da passt dann alles.. Wir werden das a&o in Zukunft aber meiden. Zu mühsam und unprofessionell war diese Episode gehandelt.
