Only stayed for one night, but the stay was fantastic. We stayed in a quad room, one queen bed, and two twins. The room was incredibly spacious, and had a lovely stocked bathroom. The view looked right over the quaint neighborhood street and it was so picturesque. They held onto our luggage while we explored the rest of Kensington. The natural history Museum is also a quick five minute walk nearby. Would highly recommend this place to stay!

Upsides: staff pleasant, clean, lots of hot water in the shower, great location, lovely architecture.

Downsides: amenities limited; room small and basic. Room service dish not as advertised. Lift not working so climbed up 5 tall flights of stairs to small bedroom. Had to come back down to pick something up and up again - 15 flights of stairs .. thank goodness i'm not too old to do it and had my back op a couple of years back! No advice sent out before arrival and I checked in to the hotel at 9.30pm. Not appreciated.

It was a great stay inn the right part of London. A pity the lift wasn't working. Room wasn't made up until the afternoon and the shower was a challenge, could have done with a shelf because impossible to bend over without opening the door. Staff friendly and helpful.

The cooked breakfast was poor. Wasnt fresh and the bacon and eggs were awful.
Fruit salad was nice and so was the bread.

The hotel was way overheated. The mattresses are old and need changing. The bathroom isnt very clean with lime deposits and hair remains.

The room is the tiniest I have ever been in! You can open your suitcase only by laying it on the bed. The elevator was tiny, like in a doll house. Very claustrophobic. The hotel itself is very clean, smells nice, with lovely toiletries.

Superior room was too small for my liking but second day was given a larger room which was much better but it was the room temperature was too cool and the air conditioning didn’t seem to be working.
I had to wear a polo shirt to bed to keep myself warm. There was also some road traffic noise earlier morning.
Breakfast was good. I had grilled chicken in the restaurant one evening and it was lovely. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. I might stay there again but I would book an executive room.

However, I was woken by one the hotel staff knocking on my door after midnight, apparently requiring an iron and ironing board which was delivered previously. I am deeply unhappy about this interruption at this time of night. This is not acceptable.

The good: Good Location. Super close to Glouster Road Tube station and retail amenities including a couple of good restaurants and a Boots pharmacy. Clean. Very nice staff. Lounge with bar. Nice King Bed.

The Not So Good: Tiny and slow elevator. Not good room design. No chest of drawers so no place to put clothes. Desk and desk chair way to big for room. No outlets next to bed. We were climbing over each other to move around. Sat on bed to eat breakfast. Tiny shower and no shower shelves. Couldn’t reach the shower floor to pick up soap and shampoo. We regulated the room temperature by window opening. The little shelf outside the window was our “ refrigerator”.

Okay hotel for single person not expecting much.

Basic rethinking of room and modest investment in furniture and amenities would go a long way to making a stay a much better experience.

We did not use the breakfast service. Got our coffee and breakfast each morning at the shop next to the tube station.

From the point of booking the communication was very good answering all the questions we had prior to our trip.
We arrived earlier than our check in to make use of the hotels luggage store, which we also utilised for a coupld of hours after check out. This was a big help for our trip and saved us trailing a large suitcase round the city.
The staff were very welcoming and explained everything well.
Our room was immaculate and had everything we needed for a relax stay in London.

I had a single room which was small but functional. The location of this hotel is excellent being near the Gloucester Road tube and also buses. Staff were very pleasant and accommodating and the building was decent enough. Would certainly stay again, but maybe in a double room.

The room we had was very small but we only stayed for 1 night so that was fine. The room was very clean and the shower over the bath was excellent. Plenty of tea and coffee available. The bar was great and full of character. We didn’t stay for breakfast as i thought £25 per head was a bit expensive, however lots of guest did. The hotel was only 20 min walk from the Royal Albert hall. And a very short walk to the tube station, so all in all, it got the thumbs up for our short stay:)

I don't know if they have only one housekeeper but my room was not ready for my check-in and I had to wait until almost 4:30 (check-in was supposed to be 3). At first, I figured they were busy but that clearly was not the case after hanging around waiting. This was on a Monday by the way. Also, they really need to update their phones in the room, the cords don't even reach a manageable distance, literally about 12-16 inches. My trash bin in the bathroom also did not open. The lid was broken and you can seriously just replace one for $5-10. I understand vintage but everything in my room was not very well-maintained.

Very small hanging space for clothes, you have to be an Olympic pole vaulter to have a shower - anyone over the age of 60 has no chance of climbing over the bath side and through the small gap staff very good

A real Gem in the heart of London

The Gem Strathmore is perfectly located for exploring the museums and Hyde Park area of London. An easy block walk off the Gloucester Road Tube and an easy walk to South Kensington.
The hotel is really nice. Comfortable and clean with an excellent bar to unwind in after a long day of sight seeing. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend this hotel.

We stayed here for the last 2 nights of a 2 week trip to England and Scotland. Our room was incredibly small. So small in fact that only one of us could walk on the floor at a time The other person had to be on the bed. We are not big people. The shower was so small you could not physically bend down to pick things up in the shower from the floor. Every time we lifted our arms to wash our hair we would elbow the soap dish. There was no type of air flow in the room. The window opened but the outside breeze did not blow into the room.

I stay here when I travel to London for work. It's much better than the other chains. It's full of character and tends to be quieter. Staff are friendly. Rooms are clean and comfortable, if a little on the small side. It's my go-to hotel and I've not been let down yet.

An okay stay but nothing to set it apart

The Gem Strathmore is constrained by the nature of the building but some better attention to detail could elevate the experience. For example, the picture in our room had slipped out of its surround (and clearly not recently), the cleaner put the contents of the bathroom bin down the toilet (plastic contact lens cases), and wardrobe doors couldn’t open because of the bed. The staff were very pleasant and efficient and the location was excellent.

I had a wonderful stay at this hotel! The location is fantastic—just two blocks from the tube, which made getting around the city super easy. There are also several amazing free museums nearby, perfect for exploring without spending a fortune.

The surrounding area has plenty of great food options, from casual bites to sit-down meals, so you’re never short on choices.

The customer service was excellent—staff were always friendly, helpful, and attentive, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable.

One thing to note is that the rooms don’t have air conditioning. It wasn’t a big issue during my stay, but it’s something to keep in mind, especially during warmer months.

Overall, I’d definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone visiting the city!

So much noise outside till past 3am from maybe emptying of bins or other maintenance work meant I slept very little so not a comfortable experience.

We booked the Gem Strathmore hoping for boutique charm and comfort. What we got was a tired hotel trading on location, with service levels that would embarrass a budget hostel.

We paid extra for early check-in and called ahead, but still waited past noon with a jet-lagged toddler and zero apology. Staff were indifferent throughout — no greeting, no help with bags, not even a bit of sympathy to our situation.

The room was sweltering with no AC, just two small desk fans and plugs only on one side of the room. It was basically a sauna with bedding. No fridge, no plug in the bathroom, and no attempt to make up for it - just a stunning absence of basics.

The lift, presumably installed during the Edwardian era and never updated since, took ages to arrive. When it did, it was occupied by a staff member with bags of dirty laundry - he didn't even flinch at the sight of a family waiting with a child and luggage.

Expedia mentioned babysitting services(for an extra fee). They don’t exist. When asked, staff shrugged. No apology, no explanation, no gesture of goodwill. We left without staying the night - and no one cared.

We paid over $500. For that, we expected hospitality. We would have settled for competence. Instead, we got apathy and the privilege of being ignored.
They offered nothing — not even a token refund.

Avoid. There are far better uses for your money — and your patience.

The only thing gem-like about this place is how hard it is, in every way, to enjoy.

Staff and the property in general were excellent; however, it perpetuates the myth that a solo traveller is OK with a room the size of a cupboard and everything squashed in.
The room needed a bit of TLC, with the desk and cupboard in need of repair/replacement.
Would class the hotel as 3* rather than 4* but still a decent stay.

Nice place - but breathe in, some rooms are tiny !

We chose this hotel mainly due to its proximity to the Royal Albert Hall, where we were going to attend a concert. The hotel looked ideal on the photographs and the price seemed good for a Kensington hotel. The building itself is nice, staff very helpful and friendly - BUT - there’s always one of those … we were shocked at how tiny the room was !! I suppose it goes to show how deceptive a well taken photo can be. Mitigating factors - it was the hottest day of the year (34 degrees) and the hotel IS in Kensington. That said, the room was like a very small, hot rabbit hutch with just enough room for the king bed, one of the smallest en-suite bathrooms and smallest showers we’ve ever come across (worldwide), and a totally ineffective table fan just basically blowing hot air around. We paid for a superior room so who knows what the ‘ordinary’ rooms are like for size.
This all sounds negative - but the staff were fine, the location was great for what we were doing and the bar was quiet and cool. It’s the size of the room that really spoilt the experience. As experienced travellers, maybe we should have managed our own expectations better …
Anyway, that’s ’operation toasted rabbit’ done and we survived. Sorry Strathmore, I know this seems like a bad review but it’s only because of the room size. Dave & Caz
