I had a great time on this trip. I was traveling with friends and family and everyone had a great time. The hotel was shutting down for a remodel 2 days after we left, but they were operating at peak efficiency. There was no degradation in service or amenities. I have stayed at several Riu properties and the brand has consistently met or exceeded my expectations

Room bedsheets were dirty and old and ran down. Wish they had better entertainment in the theater versus always having to go to the Rio party. Rooms are definitely outdated.

I am writing this review dueto my disappointing experience at RIU Palace Peninsula Cancun. I have never had to deal with such disorder and lack of communication on a trip in my life. I would like to start off with the fact that my boyfriend and I were incredibly excited to vacation at a RIU for our 3-year anniversary, in which we worked extremely hard to be able to. Only to be met with news of construction a day after we landed. Not only was this inconvenient and completely took away many of our experiences, but it was also incredibly disappointing. We were unable to enjoy the restaurants due to most of them being closed throughout our trip. We were only able to eat at 2, which also lacked organization due to there not being a method to reserve a spot at said restaurants. We were not informed that for most of the weekends, almost and if not all, restaurants would be closed. This resort was incredibly short-staffed, which caused extreme wait times for almost everything in the resort. Not to mention we also had to witness insane amounts of filth everywhere, not limited but including blood and food all over the floors. I wish I took photos of the blood splatters on the way to the buffet as well as the blood at the RIU party. However, that was too disgusting to photograph. There were also tons of food scraps around the pool area that attracted bugs. Not to mention we were awoken Monday morning to the sounds of construction at 8:30 a.m. and had to see as mattresses and other objec

Avoid: Poor Hygiene and Unusable Facilities
We stayed here a week before the resort closed for renovation. The \"pre-shutdown\" atmosphere was highly disruptive, with most restaurants closing during our final two days. While the lobby was fine, the guest floors and rooms smelled terrible due to poor housekeeping and a strange liquid used for toilet brushes.

The Experience:

Sanitation Issues: The beach was unacceptable; I saw waste in the water and on the sand multiple days in a row. Other guests described the property as \"filthy.\" Ironically, the neighboring Riu Caribe beach was much cleaner and the overall experience there felt superior.

Room & Infrastructure: Our 7th-floor room was directly above the loud HVAC system, making the balcony unusable 24/7. Additionally, most elevators were out of service, leading to long waits for the few slow units remaining.

Dining: While the food was good and staff were friendly, the buffet lines for omelets and crepes were so long that many guests gave up.

Final Verdict: Even after restoration, we will not return. The fundamental lack of beach hygiene and the fact that this \"higher-class\" resort felt inferior to the Riu Caribe next door is deal-breaker.

Our stay at the Riu was absolutely wonderful. From the moment we arrived, everything exceeded our expectations.

The food was consistently fresh and there was a great variety every day, so it never felt repetitive. The cleanliness of the entire resort really stood out — everything was well maintained and spotless at all times.

What made the biggest difference, though, was the staff. Everyone was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and always willing to help. You can truly feel that they care about the guests’ experience.

Overall, we had an amazing time and would definitely come back. Highly recommended!

The property had a raw smell when they wipe it. However they addressed it. Called for an iron and it took 45mins to an hour to get one and then I had to rush to catch dinner. Over all the property was ok.

Just got back from a 5 night stay. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, especially for nightly diners for our large group, and drinks at all the bars. The food was really nothing to write home about, but edible. You must wear a wristband on this property and if you lose it or it comes off, you are required to pay $140 at checkout. This was definitely a negative for me, as I usually never wear anything on my wrists, was super worried about it, and can still feel it on my skin even though I’ve been home for over a day. The hotel itself was subpar, but we were told that this property is getting a total overhaul in a week or two, so hopefully it will look refreshed soon, otherwise I’d pass on staying here.

There was a nice Cancun sign on a pier right next to the property, but we weren’t allowed to go on it to take a picture without being charged $3 per person (no way Jose!). A shame that the resort itself didn’t have some type of large letters to pose in front of as many other resorts do.

The highlight for us was being able to attend the Riu Parties held at the Riu Caribe right next door (walk over) and have access to that resort, as it was much more modern and seemed to have many more amenities.

overall, my family has a wonderful time there. the food/restaurants are very good and enjoyable. the staffs were very friendly and welcoming. the resort is very clean. the resort app is very helpful and responsive to your requests. the one issue is related with the elevator where the button doesn't. in order to go down you will need to call the staff first. at first it was confusion but we got over with the elevator issue and enjoy the rest of the resort

We have been going to the RIU Peninsula for 5 years and RIU hotels in Cancun for 13+. The RIU peninsula has evolved into more family or kid friendly rather than balancing adult activities. Literally basically lights out by 10pm. Shows are mixed between their own entertainment crew and some nights professionals. Keep in mind shows are open for kids so be ready for constant interruptions and adults not watching children. NOW; THERE IS NO UTILIZATION OF OTHER RIU Amenities after 5:30 so be sure the check entertainment schedule as you will not be able to join other RIU hotels shows as previously allowed.
Elevators on main high rise was broken so many trips up and down from 16th floor.
Requested repair on fridge and within six days still had not been fixed. Keep in mind ice only on 3 floors. So with elevators broken and warm fridge …. Well enough said.
Now the staff in restaurants and bars are amazing.
We will definitely be going to an adult only hotel next year and I hope the RIU increases their level of service.

This hotel had probably one of the best buffets we’ve ever had at an all-inclusive. They kept the property extremely clean with the exception of the poolside hamburger hut. I wish we wouldn’t have seen that on our first day, but the rest of the property made up for it! There’s only a small beach area and most of the shoreline along this part of Cancun is rather rocky. All in all, this Riu Palace met our expectations!

The staff works diligently to keep the property, nice and clean, our accommodations were very good, we had a 4 bed jr. suite. The swim up bar was lots of fun and staff keeps everybody entertained. We were a little disappointed in the “stage” entertainment and the internet is spotty and poor, but didn’t change our opinion of the overall resort experience. Food and drinks were excellent!

Run down! Elevators did not work! Had to use the service elevator that were filthy. The air conditioning did not work properly even afteral several try to fix it, they said that 76f was the normal temperature. The simulation wood of the pool are are coming off.The thing they are remodeling the whole hotel in one or two weeks so they have done anything maintenance ti the hotel recently; the main problem the hotel does not state this when you make the reservation so you assume you are going to a 5 star hotel in the class palace of the Riu chain that is the best class of their hotel but in this moment this not true so you feel scammed. Before making a reservation ask if the hotel has bern remodel before you reserve it!!

Elevators were down the entire 6 day trip. We were on the 9th floor and had to walk all the way up. We figured out that the other bank of elevators would take us to our floor only by going up to the 11th floor and then come down two floors. It was crazy for spring break week. The property is very old but I hear they’re shutting down for a few months to upgrade so maybe it will be better after reopening but it was very disappointing for how much we paid. The only great thing about the property was the staff, everyone was kind and helpful!

Nice campus. Needs some updating. Elevators were troubled, tv in room was very small and no tv's behind the bars or pool bar. Staff was very nice, but the expedia representative was dishonest and not helpful. Don't waste money on the round trip shuttle unless you want to head to the airport over 4 hours early. We took an Uber and is cheaper and 2 hours before departure was more than enough time for the 25 minute bag drop/tsa line.

This is one of the nicest all-inclusive resorts we’ve stayed at. We stayed (family of 5) for 5 days over my kids’ spring break. The hotel was busy, but never felt over-crowded.

Our room was a two room suite, which I couldn’t find much info about on the setup. We were happy with the room when we finally saw it. It is two separate rooms, but it has a small hallway that has a door so we were able to keep the bedroom doors open for each other while still keeping the hallway door closed. Worked perfect for us.

The buffet was always stocked and the food was wonderful. Lots of options and variety every day. We ate at the steakhouse and that was delicious too. The snack bar by the pool was the kids’ favorite.

The pool area was clean and a lot of fun with the activity staff. Activity pool was heated, but the others were not, but still nice enough.

The staff was the VERY best. Every employee we interacted with waswonderful. When we needed anything in our room, they were there within minutes. We got to the hotel at 4am after flight delays and cancellations, and the desk staff could not have been nicer.

The only thing that was a tiny downfall was the beach. It is smaller, and on one side, mostly rocks. We still enjoyed it, and with a short walk over towards the RIU Caribe, we had even more beach front to enjoy.

We will 100% go back to this resort!!! We’ve been home for a few hours and the kids are already asking when can we go back.

Everything was perfect however I want however we will offer to upgrade to a suite with a Jacuzzi. We agreed for the upgrade when we went into the Jacuzzi, the Jacuzzi didn’t not work. Overall, I had a great experience at this hotel. The staff was amazing, very friendly and attentive and the quality of the food was really good. Everything felt well organized and enjoyable.

The only issue I noticed was at the sports bar buffet. It tended to get messy because no one seemed to be monitoring that area. It would help to have someone keeping an eye on it so guests don’t leave it in disarray.

Other than that, everything was excellent and I really enjoyed my stay.

Everything about this resort exceeded expectations beyond what I thought possible. Would never recommend booking through Expedia ever again (for a multitude of reasons). But the resort made everything right that Expedia ruined so hats off to RIU Palace Peninsula. Next time I will book directly through the resort! Also highly recommend going to Coco Bongo (book through Andre in the pool area) it's a night you won't ever forget!!

When we Checked in the girl was only worried about upgrading our room and never mentioned where restaurants were located or if any events were happening that day. She did however give us an envelope saying there is a map in there in case you need it. The other girl next to us checking other people in, was explaining everything in detail so we picked up a couple of things from her. All the employees that cleaned rooms ,served food or drinks were very nice and helpful. We decided to book at this hotel because we saw on Tik Tok that it said it was just built in December 2025 but then when we arrived we could tell it was an older hotel. Supposedly they will go under renovation in April of 2026 per other guests there. Loved that in the lobby area they had a bar on one side and a coffee bar on the other , that was genius. There were only 2 elevators on both sides so sometimes it would take forever to get to lobby and pool areas. they had an activity or something fun to do each day or night so that was a plus.

Keep in mind that this is my 18th trip to Cancun, almost all to different hotels, so I do know what I'm talking about. This hotel has some good points, but it was not among my top five. The rooms are clean, the check in was easy (they gave us a room early, and it had a beautiful view) and there are plenty of places to eat and drink. The heated pools are a real plus for us, because water can get cold in February, even in Cancun. The Italian restaurant was amazing. We could have eaten just the buffet part, but we ordered entrees as well, and they were delicious. The steakhouse is also an excellent choice. Oddly, we thought the Mexican restaurant was the weakest. Go figure. Now, the downside. During my 18 trips, I have encountered tremendous staff, going above and beyond. This was not the case here. Most staff were pleasant, but not all. They weren't rude, just not helpful, which leads to my next point. If the entertainment is important to you, skip this place. They shows were mediocre and sometimes boring. I have seen fabulous Michael Jackson shows. This one had a very large Michael Jackson who didn't move well and often forgot the words. In addition, they changed the schedule around without notification. One of the things I look to do is karaoke. I have special performances that audience often enjoy. After about 10 or so people asked if I would perform again, I told them yes, only to find the karaoke time had been moved. The entertainment director didn't seem to care.

The only truly great part of our stay at Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula was the employees. Every staff member we interacted with was kind, friendly, and clearly working hard to provide good service. Their hospitality was the highlight of the trip and the main reason this review isn’t lower. We were also there for a wedding, and I will say the wedding itself was very well organized and executed.
That said, many other aspects of the stay were disappointing. The grounds were clean and generally well maintained, but the experience didn’t live up to what you would expect from a luxury all-inclusive resort.
The food was mostly underwhelming. The breakfast buffet was actually quite good, but the rest of the food across the property was mediocre at best. The drinks were also extremely weak and often tasted watered down, which was disappointing for an all-inclusive resort.
Entertainment was also lacking. The theater appeared mostly unused during our stay, and there were very few shows or activities in the evenings. It made the resort feel quieter and less lively than expected.
Another issue was the constant presence of people around the property trying to sell things. We were approached repeatedly by vendors pushing souvenirs or services. Even more concerning, there were strange men approaching guests trying to talk them into buying drugs, which made the atmosphere uncomfortable and not something you expect at a resort like this.

Overall this was a great place the drinks and food were delicious the parties, activities and shows were so fun. The staff were awesome, very sweet and helpful people. The main thing that should be fixed is that they need more bathrooms throughout the building and by the pools. It was over all clean but the bedsheets

I paid for an upgrade through Expedia and I also paid for another upgrading once I arrive because that Expedia showed were not room. Altogether I paid over $300 for a group review and never got that it literally is the same for you from the garden and the ocean. It should really be called a pool that’s all you get it. Other than that little issue, everything else was 10/10! The staff was amazing. The resort was beautiful. The food was not good, but I feel all inclusive have nasty food.

We had an ocean view room which was nice but I didn’t love being up on the 12th floor. Our room was clean and stocked well. The entire hotel was clean but the decor is outdated. We were informed on our arrival the hotel was closing in April for updates with makes sense.

The food was hit or miss. I can see why there are mixed reviews on that. The early morning selections in the sports bar were awful, everything was stale and gross like it had been sitting out literally all night. Once the main buffet opened it was great, a lot of delicious food to choose from. Some of the food left much to be desired, you just have to find the good stuff. I think that's to be expected at most all inclusive destinations though, not everything will be piping hot and fresh when you have a hundred dishes to choose from. Curb your expectations, you're going to an all inclusive, not a five star restaurant.

Some of the staff was very friendly and helpful, the outdoor waitstaff and buffet waitstaff were especially great. We had a fun photo shoot with Sophia (I believe was her name), who was great! But when we went to look at our photos in the gift shop we were just shown a QR code, which took us through a long and confusing process to set up an account to try to view our photos. I don’t know why they made this such a process but it was so annoying we just left without seeing the photos which was disappointing.

Overall a great stay, just a few minor changes would have made it better.

The property is amazing, we personally had issues with the cooling at our room for 2 nights out of 3 which is not expected from a resort operating at this level. they did fix it though.
Top class amenities, no doubt about that

Easy check-in, friendly staff and surprisingly good food for an AI resort. Enjoyed being able to access newer adults only Riu Caribe next door to let loose and then come back to a more low-key atmosphere. First time in a long time I feel I may have got an Expedia upgrade room- rooms at end of hallway ending in 07 had the hot tub on the balcony- very nice!

Was not told when booking that they would be doing construction for 9am to 5pm every day. Extremely load. Could not change our room or accommodate us and we ended up leaving to a different hotel.

Was locked out of my room and when I asked why they said someone one my room had popped by the pool and tried to charge us $300 . I asked for proof because we were sure no one did that and they kept saying I had to pay . After a good 40 min they said they had a picture and when they showed it to us the realized it wasn’t any of us. All they said it was a mistake and let us back in the room. The honestly ruins a whole day of vacation because they accused us infront of others . I felt so uncomfortable after Thai . Will not be coming back !

Dear Expedia Customer Service,

I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with the service and overall experience during our recent vacation package booked through Expedia for our stay at Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula in Cancun.

First, upon arrival we were charged $170 for a room upgrade. We were informed that this was necessary in order to receive a better room. However, we later learned that all rooms at the hotel feature balconies with ocean views. Two years ago, during our previous stay at the same property, we received a similar room without any additional charge. Therefore, we believe the $170 upgrade fee was unnecessary and unjustified.

Second, beginning Monday, the hotel started renovation work without any prior notice to guests. The noise was extremely loud and constant. It was impossible to relax or enjoy our vacation due to the excessive construction noise. Had we been informed in advance, we would have reconsidered our booking.

Additionally, during elevator repairs, access to one of the elevators was blocked, and a strong-smelling paint or chemical substance was used in the area. The odor was so intense that it was difficult to breathe. This created a very uncomfortable and unpleasant environment, especially considering we environment, especially considering we were there to отдых and relax.
