Our stay was 3 Nigts- rooms looked clean and we needed request to change the sheets these werw clean but some dark spots ( manchas) The water in the Jacuzzi was cold and the
Water was not clear/clean.
Swimming pool’s were clean and nice.
Bathroom needs to have kleenex, body lotion and soap bar.
Buffet restaurant food was good.
Staff need improve their customer service skils.
The beach is beutiful, We have a good time

The room was very spacious and clean. Housekeeping came to the room at least two times a day providing fresh towels and tidied the room. The buffet restaurant has several food options. If you are looking for a more relaxed Cancun experience this hotel is the right choice.

We love it here! Small, manageable, lovely — the vegetation, the rooms, the pool (jhovan and Consuela delivering ice cream around the pool) and the beach is stunning !!! It’s more low key than some and we love that. Shout out to the staff that works so so so hard for it to feel this lovely. We are so grateful!

Genral layout of hotel and grounds was beautiful. Most staff were polite and helpful. Long line ups at bars was terrible needs more staff to man bars. Only had warm water to shower on occasion and some days not at all. No bottled water in room for first 3 days to drink and make coffee. Beach was amazing again limited staff for drink orders or none at all. In genral its a beautiful place with enormous potetial that has not been realized.

The hotel overall was ok, lobby looked very old . The room was renewed and was ok.
The reservation to restaurants was almost impassible, lines to get the drink by the beach was 20-30 people long, the entertainment team
completely didn’t speak English because they don’t like America even though they like $$. I felt very weird and rood .

This was a really decent resort. The food and the facilities were both good. We loved that it was very natural with lots of critters and foliage.

Out room was satisfactory, definitely the right value for what we paid. Our toilet was broken but it was resolved quickly and professionally.

Unfortunately the service often left us wanting. Our service experience was extremely polarising; it was either phenomenal or poor. At check in, we were treated quite robotically by the reception staff we dealt with, often times bordering on rude. Our traveling companions on the other hand dealt with another staff member (immediately next to us) and were received warmly with lots of offers to make their stay more comfortable and enjoyable. They were offered early access to their room, which upon hearing this our staff member told us “absolutely not.” We returned to reception ten minutes later and asked the other staff member who gave us immediate access to our room. Other circumstances like this arose through the trip where one staff member would be very accommodating but another would be rude and short with us.

Also a note to avoid the staff members in the white polo shirts. They are very pushy about their Executive packages and it became a chore to try and avoid them each day.

The room was decent, but they kept pushing a membership on us the entire time, which ended up wasting a whole day in discussions. They had promised my mom a complimentary spa session just for meeting with them, even if we chose not to sign up. However, once we declined the offer, that promise wasn’t honored.

The resort itself was smaller than I anticipated.

We have gone to this resort for almost 2 decades, and we are sorry to say that it is now a cheap resort that is catering to a clientele of drunk, rude people who are more interested in getting as drunk as possible and yelling at the staff! It is no longer the beautiful and calm paradise resort, but a spring breaker that is having their first beer and now wants to party! Definitely do not take your families or children to this resort. They advertise it as family friendly, but it is absolutely not! They also advertise it for honeymooners and it is not a place for honeymooners! We experienced everything from broken glass in the food at the buffet to a child pooping in the swimming pool and the staff did nothing about it. They just kept letting everyone continue to swim in the pool while the poop was being swept off to the sidewalk. A large amount of amenities that they still post on their site and include in their promotional materials are no longer at the resort. They have traded in amenities and services for their customers, and now have fancy patio furniture instead. The management also allows the guests to act incredibly rude to not only other guests, but also their staff. The staff is trying to do their job the best they can, but it is obvious that there is no joy left in their work. Expedia should absolutely not rate this as a VIP hotel! There is nothing about the hotel that is VIP.

Stayed here only because our usual resort was under renovation. Giving 2 stars mainly for the staff, who work very hard and deserve tips.

We booked VIP/Privilege through Expedia, but it was unclear what benefits were included, and it didn’t feel worth the upgrade.

The beach is nice, but there is too much shade from palm trees, so you often have to move sunbeds to find sun. Sunbeds are basic and uncomfortable for long use.

Food was disappointing overall: bland, under-seasoned, sometimes cold, with long waits at restaurants. The Steakhouse was the best à la carte option, but if you want medium-rare steak, order it well done. Mexican restaurant was below average, hibachi nothing special, and room service very limited.

Lobby is dark with uncomfortable seating; lobby bathrooms were not clean and had flushing issues. Lukewarm shower water and lack of bathroom ventilation were also problems.

Only one smoking area near the lobby, no chairs, very uncomfortable.

Staff and animation team were the highlight. Unfortunately, the resort itself did not meet expectations.

I think the differences in experience depend on if you are part of their privilege program or not, or what avenue you took to book your vacation. The privileged group had certain foods, beverages, restaurants and even tables that we weren't allowed to access. Their living quarters even looked completely different, and was what I saw more often on their website. The room, although very clean, was in okay condition, cracks in the walks and ceiling, worn out furniture and mirrors, and not really what you see in the photos. The food was very good in the main restaurant, and had better Mexican food than their Mexican restaurant. The staff were very friendly but very few went above and beyond to make sure your needs were met; simple requests like chairs at the beach were met with \"it's not possible\" and there were very few staff working around the pool and beach areas. Interestingly enough, there was not much entertainment throughout the day until the Monday we left, we wondered if it was a way to introduce new guests and then would putter out throughout the week. We have stayed at a few other all-inclusives and although we made the most of our time here, it did not live up to the others, especially within the same price range.

Hotel/Maroma beach is lovely - hotel clears seaweed if it occurs.
Rooms (3319) are a good size but lack views and are in 3 block complexes.
Only 1 large pool but so noisy, not peaceful. Hotel needs an alternative quiet area pool.
All inclusive food / drinks were ok but difficult to book themed restaurants.
This hotel is large so it is catering for the masses unless you upgrade to Privilege or Exclusive grades.
Would not advise for disabled or elderly guests - long walks from rooms to facilities.

The only good thing about the resort is the beach and we had one decent meal at the Steakhouse. The staff is trying their best, but they fail due to lack of resources and extremely poor management.
The whole resort is outdated and smelly. The furniture is old and smelly, straight from the lobby.
The rooms are in very bad condition, mine smelled like mold and sewer the whole time I was there. And so did my friends’ rooms ..and we had 7 rooms. Not one was decent.
The buffet is poorly staffed and they have ridiculous rules where they won’t let you sit with your friends even if the table is big enough, asking to accommodate bigger groups is not even possible

There are only 3 bars, one pool. And the pool is mostly for children

This was not the cheapest of resorts, so if you have the money to spend, go somewhere else!

Management needs to be changed and they need to make some serious investments in infrastructure and facilities

Terrible experience with front desk person Mauricio regarding our room. Unable to change our room even though he said they would try the next day .lied and chanced his story so we asked to speak to manager . The room smelled like mold and all they did was spray air freshner . The manger Rogerlio was useless at acknowledging our issues and complaints . We were stuck in the moldy room for 4 nights . Declined to refund us our money to go elsewhere . My sister had health issues and it made her cough non stop . The food was hit and miss . The dinner at Bloved was awful too salty and well done steak was red and raw. Buffet food was hot and miss . . Never go back

This is a very beautiful resort in a lush rainforest setting, but Americans should understand exactly what they’re getting before booking.

Location & Scenery:
The rainforest environment is absolutely stunning and was the biggest positive surprise. The property feels very tropical, with lush greenery everywhere. We saw animals occasionally running around, which added to the experience. For anyone concerned, the animals keep their distance and are not a problem at all.

Pools & Common Areas:
The pool is excellent—large, clean, and well maintained. Some areas are close to 8 feet deep, which is great for adults but something to be aware of if you have small children. Common areas were consistently clean and well cared for.

Housekeeping & Room Comfort:
Housekeeping was excellent and came every day like clockwork. Rooms were cleaned thoroughly and quickly. Beds were comfortable. The AC and ceiling fans worked very well and kept the room cool at all times. Walls are somewhat thin, but noise was manageable overall.

Food & Drinks (Biggest Weakness):
The food is where this resort falls short for Americans.

The buffet was very disappointing—bland overall and heavily focused on pork. If you’re used to American-style poolside food like burgers, wings, chicken nuggets, or hot dogs, you will not find much of that her

Rooms was spotless clean. Room in the building #3 was super noisy 8am to 10pm because of a construction nearby. It was hard to stay in the room for relax or work during the daytime. My advice is to bring a spray against insects(mosquitoes), and afterbite medication. Staff is great, helpful and nice, no problem at all.

This is the worst all inclusive I’ve had stayed in. From the day of check in to last day we were unsatisfied. We had to move to three different rooms because of mold smells and room maintenance. This was our third time at Playa Maroma. A quiet smallish resort with great food .We love the authentic Mexican vibe and the jungle setting. Lots of wonderful seating areas though our the complex.Great coffee shop. Lots of wild life viewing. Even got to see monkeys this time around.
The only con was the misleading phone call saying that since we were repeat customers they wanted to give us complimentary massages etc. Turns out it was just a pitch for a modern twist on time share type privileges. No complimentary gifts once we turned down the pitch. Not impressed.

The hotels grounds, and many of the service staff are quite nice. That’s where it ends. All of the infrastructure, from the buildings to AC and even plumbing, seems to be failing quite miserably. This place may have been nice 10+ years ago, but i would not recommend coming here now. Front desk staff are not very helpful, you really have to complain and create a bit of a scene to get even a simple thing like for instance the lock on our door fixed, or an option to move rooms when ours would not go below 30 degrees. Our experience wasn’t isolated as we heard story after story about people’s bad experiences.

We had a wonderful week at this resort! Don't pay attention to any bad reviews! Those guests must be crabby!
This resort has a great feel... beautiful lobby, cozy sitting places sprinkled around the resort, manicured spaces, impecably clean throughout. All of the staff were friendly and welcoming. We are beach people and got to know Paola, the server in the privilege section, really well! She was so nice! Emilio, the recently hired beach/pool manager was also the best!
The food was DELISH at each restaurant. The best we've had at all of the resorts we've been to. We made the required reservations at the beginning of our stay for the whole week. Worked out seemlessly.
We would jump at the chance to return to this resort! Highly recommend!!

Great resort in jungle setting but along a very nice beach. Lots of beach loungers around pool and at beach. Never any line ups for buffet restaurant and reservations for other restaurants were easy to book. Food was good and lots of variety at Buffet. Stayed in Privileged category which is in the buildings closer to the pool and beach, and gives exclusive access to a certain area of the beach with lu gets and daybeds (free) and the beachfront Beloved restaurant, which is al la carte for all meals (it was fine but we only ate there once and preferred the Buffet restaurant). The check in desk and main buffet are a fairly long walk away from the pool and beach (about 400 metres with the 6 buildings with rooms along the path) so there can be a lot of walking. Dedicated coffee shop on site was great and had wide assortment of hot and cold drinks and many desserts. Our room was not one of the renovated rooms but it was clean and spacious. The AC unit was fairly loud but kept the room nice and cool at night. Lots of Coatis roaming around and saw one monkey. All staff were very pleasant and attentive. We would stay here again but would book a renovated room next time (they had none available to upgrade to when we stayed).

Food is great with a lot of healthy options. Great value for the price. My only problem is bed bugs. I have bites all over my legs and arms. I know it’s something hard to get rid of and most likely if one room is infected- all rooms probably as well. Unfortunately, this is the only reason I likely will not return.

Upon arrival, the lobby looked outdated with parts of the roof missing, and the buffet area had a foul odor. Thankfully, the other restaurants were excellent with great food. Our first night was difficult — the room next door had a woman with several children screaming nonstop. I called the front desk twice for help, but no one answered. I eventually went to the door myself, and while the noise briefly quieted, it soon returned. The mom appeared drunk and overwhelmed, and the children were out of control.
Overall, most of the staff were friendly and helpful, but guest services were hesitant to provide smaller bills, which was frustrating since these were meant for tipping their own employees. Scheduling dinner reservations online was also a nightmare — the system doesn’t allow changes, and adjustments require a long walk to guest services.
Another disappointment was the lack of communication about the privilege amenities. At check-in, nothing was mentioned, and I only learned days later about the privilege breakfast and dinner options, which I then missed out on. The free 30-minute massage, however, was excellent and a highlight of the stay.
In summary, while the staff (outside guest services) were wonderful, the specialty restaurants were enjoyable, and the massage was amazing, the outdated facilities, noise issues, poor communication, and frustrating reservation system left a lot to be desired.

The resort was beautiful, lots of trees everywhere and it made you feel like you were in in the rainforest. The room, even thought we paid for a romance privilege package, we did not receive all that was mentioned on the site. The room was dated and not the newer one that was mentioned we would get. I was hoping that since you were paying more for the room it would be closer and more convenient to the beach and pool area, it was not. Save your money and get the cheaper rooms, closer to the beach and pool area. The staff in the buffet area, was a hit or miss on them being friendly and/or courteous. The buffet food overall not the greatest but it was not bad either. The staff in the restaurants were superb and the food very yummy, would suggest to make reservations ahead of time and eat there whenever possible. There are 5 specialty restaurants to try. My favorite was the Japanese one. If you are wanting night life this is not the resort for you. The pool closes at 8. Which was very disappointing, since it it extremely hot during the day and it would have been nice to have it open once the suns sets. If you are traveling with small kids then yes this will be good for your family. Overall it was a pretty place with animals running all over the place, which I love. Would I go there again probably not.

The property is serene and quiet (not a party resort) which was great. Its also not a huge resort which is nice. The beach was not usable during our stay due to the Sargassum weed issue (do your research before booking anywhere in Mexico during the summer). We spent all our time in the pool which was great.
The only down side to this resort was an issue with service which was not handled well. We booked dinner at one of the restaurants the first night and when we arrived they informed us that its only for their privilege members which we were not. They couldn't tell me why their system let me book it. They offered to seat us in 2 other restaurants but only if we were willing to purchase a $50USD bottle of wine. Aside from this incident which was not great the overall stay was pleasant and I would recommend the resort.

This resort is truly 10/10. The food options are amazing, the rooms are very clean and well maintained, the beach is breathtaking, beach service is quick and everyone is so kind and always smiling. I would absolutely stay here again.

The resort does have one tiny thing I want to point out that wasn’t necessarily an issue for me but might be for other travelers. there are domestic animals on the property; monkeys and other mammals, and some reptiles including a python and other varieties of snakes that do roam free. I only point this out in the event that someone is considering this resort but has a phobia of snakes.

Every employee we came into contact with at this resort was an absolute joy! The resort is a beautiful natural habitat for animals. It was so much fun to see the different animals. The room was beautiful and the food was fabulous. The maids came everyday and stocked our fridge with beer and Pepsi products. It was so easy to get an excursion booked and the concierge had a great knowledge of them all. Everything was extremely clean and beautifully managed. The beach area is large and very enjoyable. Do be aware you have the chance of seaweed during the summer months. It didn’t put one minute’s damper on the fun and enjoyment we had. I would love to come back!

Everyone was so friendly and helpful!! The grounds were beautifully manicured. Unfortunately, there was a huge influx of red sargassum (seaweed) that they could do nothing about, but they worked sun up to sundown raking it up and disposing of it. The staff was very accommodating. The buffet was really good with lots of choices. The dinner restaurants were top notch. The snack bars and food trucks, and many drink bars were all exceptional. The pools were well maintained and clean. Lots of guest services were available as well. The wildlife at the resort was probably my favorite part!! Monkeys, coaties, birds, iguanas, and even a boa constrictor were all enjoyed! We can’t wait to return!

5/5 – A Heartfelt and Memorable Stay

Catalonia Playa Maroma – All Inclusive is a warm and welcoming resort. While it may be smaller in scale compared to some others, the genuine hospitality of the staff makes it stand out in the best way.

During our visit, we met another family who was staying for the fifth time—that says a lot about the consistent quality of service and experience.

The Kids Club team was a true highlight. They showed real care and kept the children engaged and active in the most thoughtful way. It gave us peace of mind and made the trip even more enjoyable for our entire family.

All around, a wonderful and heartfelt experience. We would absolutely return.

the beach was beautiful but the seagrass was horrible. It is not the properties fault and they were trying their best to clean it up. the hotel was very clean and the staff was great, always smiling. the downfall is all the walking! everything is far to walk and no golf carts or other transportation to help. If you are in great shape or younger would not be as much as an issue.

The rooms are very dark and outdated. When making restaurant reservations, the policy is strict- they cancel your booking if you’re more than 10 minutes late, yet they often make you wait over 15 minutes to be seated. The buffet is extremely repetitive, serving the exact same dishes every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The beach is covered in seaweed, making it unpleasant to enjoy. Bell service is also frustratingly slow—our bags took over an hour to be picked up when we were checking out. This wouldn’t normally be a big issue, but we were in Building 6, which is quite far from the main reception.

Calling the front desk was equally disappointing. They repeatedly told us someone was right outside our door, which clearly wasn’t true, causing us to run late for our airport transfer.

On top of that, the staff asked us to leave our room from 5:30 to 6:30 pm so they could decorate it. Nothing happened. The next night, they made the same request and again failed to show up. It was incredibly frustrating to be inconvenienced for no reason.

Overall, the resort felt very disorganized and poorly managed.

I had a wonderful stay at this resort! Everything was so clean and well maintained, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The food was absolutely delicious—every meal was a treat. The staff were amazing—friendly, attentive, and always ready to help with a smile.

We were lucky to have the best room, complete with our own private pool on the balcony—it was pure luxury!

I especially loved being surrounded by nature. It created such a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

We left feeling super relaxed and refreshed. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing gateway.
