- Good mix of restaurants, my favorite being Beloved with a balcony overlooking the beach, but you must be a privileged patron to eat there. Mexican of all the foods actually tasted the worst and was extremely dry.

- The general jungle theme was very fitting with lots of animals. Had no issues with mosquitoes.

- Transportation was efficient and effective. I used NexusTours for arrival and departure.

- Room service was free if using Expedia to purchase your trip.

- All employees were highly professional, respectful, and kind

- Rooms seemed a little dated, even the privileged room I was in seemed dated 5216.

- Speaking as a non-drinker, all alcoholic beverages were watered down in the different locations that had bars with one exception being the front entry bar which made good/normal drinks.

- the seaweed from the golf was extremely prevalent. They have bulldozers cleaning the beach all morning and afternoon to maintain the beach the best they can. March through October seems to be the bad month for the seaweed and when it starts to rot, it smells like rotten eggs. This is not the hotel’s fault. Just understand what you’re going into.

- Spa was a little on the expensive side with a couples 50 minute massage running $228 even with a 20% discount from Expedia. Some massages run into the $400 range. Compared to other resorts I have stayed in Turkey or Egypt this was a lower end value.

The property was beautiful with lots of greenery that you feel like you're in the jungle! Excellent food and different choices. The pool size was great, lots of room and beautiful pool. We enjoyed the shallow pools which was great for my kids. Be prepared to walk a lot. One thing we didn't like was the fact that we were on the 3rd floor and there aren't any elevators. Hopefully they improve that, when you're taking 4-5 luggages up the stairs along with the a stroller! The Japanese restaurant was our absolute favorite! The photographers were very friendly and were always offering to take pictures around the pool, in the pool, and on the beach with different props which was nice to see at the end of our trip. Also, the night shows were good and lively. Be aware, the club isn't really a club, it's more of a late night bar lol but we still brought the party! I would personally go back and hope to in the future!

I have been coming to Catalonia Playa Maroma for the past four years, and my most recent stay was in June 2026. Unfortunately, I can honestly say that things have changed for the worse.

One of the main reasons I chose Catalonia was because of the little details that made the resort special: the beautiful beach, the palm trees, the natural jungle atmosphere, and the wildlife you encounter during your morning walks.

This year, however, I noticed several disappointing changes. The Maloo juice bar by the beach is gone, the coconut cookies that used to be served every evening have disappeared, and the cute little food trucks are no longer there. Instead, there seems to be a much greater focus on upselling. Staff members approach guests multiple times a day to promote professional photos, massages, tours, and other paid services. There is also constant pressure to join the exclusive membership program, with guests being targeted individually. It almost feels as though every potential member is assigned to a concierge whose job is to encourage enrollment.

I always appreciated Catalonia because it was away from the Hotel Zone and offered a more relaxed experience without the aggressive sales tactics commonly found at other resorts. Sadly, that no longer seems to be the case.

The whole scenery of this hotel is beautiful. Booking excursions directly through the hotel is also the way to go. Also, that little snorkeling trip for $35 is definitely a good bang for a buck even if you just want to enjoy the water and float around.
The food and drinks were amazing. Haven’t had a chance to try the Japanese spot but I’ve heard great things about it. To me, the pretty much private beach was the best part. There isn’t much of a nightlife, at least for my time there but the drinking at the pool bar was definitely fun.

My experience at this resort was extremely disappointing and frustrating from the moment I arrived. On the very first day, I was forced to change rooms three separate times due to mistakes made by the resort staff. After the inconvenience of repeatedly packing and moving my belongings, I was told that the only solution was to upgrade my room, which cost me an additional $200.

What made the situation even worse was what happened at checkout. Despite already paying the $200 upgrade fee, the resort attempted to charge me another $180 for the same room upgrade along with additional resort taxes that had never been clearly explained beforehand. Waiting until a guest is ready to leave to present unexpected charges feels deceptive and unprofessional.

I will say that one of the highlights of my trip was the massage service. The massage was excellent, and the spa staff provided a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, even that positive experience was overshadowed by being heavily solicited to purchase a timeshare valued at approximately $35,000. While I understand resorts may promote ownership opportunities, the sales pressure felt excessive and took away from the vacation atmosphere.

The constant room changes, lack of communication, surprise fees, and aggressive sales tactics created unnecessary stress during what should have been a relaxing vacation. I felt as though the resort was more focused on generating additional revenue than providing quality customer service.

We had a good time but won't be back. They claim there are multiple restaurants, but one of them is for platinum members only and the other three restaurants are reservation only, and we're pretty much sold out all week. This pushes you to the buffet for every meal, which in fairness was really good, but nobody pays $500/night to eat at a buffet nightly. They have some cabs that stay on site and jack the prices way up, but you are forced to use them. After a prearranged cab driver changed the price on us, we asked for a different cab driver and they said it wasn't possible. The massive amounts of seaweed makes the beach very unswimmable, which I know isn't their fault, but the price of the resort reflects a \"beachfront resort\". We are definitely not coming back.

Overall, our stay was mixed.

The beach was not well maintained, which was disappointing. The buffet food was around 4/10, and the late-night snacks (11pm–2am) were very poor—after the first 20 minutes, there was no staff, just oily trays of fish and chicken left sitting out, along with leftover desserts from dinner.

The à la carte restaurants were good, but reservations were very hard to get. Early time slots were already booked by guests who arrived before us, so we missed most of the nightly shows (9:30 pm).

We also had an uncomfortable experience at one of the restaurants. My boyfriend and I had a reservation, and when we arrived, we were told that only outdoor tables were available and we’d have to wait for indoor seating. We agreed to wait, but after about 15 minutes, a staff member came and told me that what I was wearing didn’t meet the dress code for indoor seating and was “too much,” and that I either had to sit outside or change. What made this worse was that I had worn the exact same dress to the same restaurant two days earlier with no issue. The inconsistency and the way it was handled felt unfair and uncomfortable.

Overall, the good restaurants didn’t make up for the poor food options, beach conditions, and frustrating reservation system.

This was our third visit to this resort. The staff are very friendly and the food was great. Because of our package, we were able to eat at the à la carte restaurants every day. Manuel Molina at Steakville, where we ate twice, was one of the best. The steak I had was delicious.
We also ate three times at Momma Mia (Italian Cuisine), and each time were served by Eddie who was outstanding! William the manager and Edy the chef also were great and brought is a special dessert treat to taste. It was fantastic and we recommended it for future consideration on the menu.

Making a dinner reservation was impossible, the app didn’t work so you had to find a person and ask for a table. There were only 3 bars so lines were long for pool drinks. We would rather have spent more money for a better experience. After dinner you can hang in the lobby but nothing much going on besides a show at 9:30am.

Our stay was 3 Nigts- rooms looked clean and we needed request to change the sheets these werw clean but some dark spots ( manchas) The water in the Jacuzzi was cold and the
Water was not clear/clean.
Swimming pool’s were clean and nice.

We love it here! Small, manageable, lovely — the vegetation, the rooms, the pool (jhovan and Consuela delivering ice cream around the pool) and the beach is stunning !!! It’s more low key than some and we love that. Shout out to the staff that works so so so hard for it to feel this lovely. We are so grateful!

Genral layout of hotel and grounds was beautiful. Most staff were polite and helpful. Long line ups at bars was terrible needs more staff to man bars. Only had warm water to shower on occasion and some days not at all. No bottled water in room for first 3 days to drink and make coffee. Beach was amazing again limited staff for drink orders or none at all. In genral its a beautiful place with enormous potetial that has not been realized.

This was a really decent resort. The food and the facilities were both good. We loved that it was very natural with lots of critters and foliage.

Out room was satisfactory, definitely the right value for what we paid. Our toilet was broken but it was resolved quickly and professionally.

Unfortunately the service often left us wanting. Our service experience was extremely polarising; it was either phenomenal or poor. At check in, we were treated quite robotically by the reception staff we dealt with, often times bordering on rude. Our traveling companions on the other hand dealt with another staff member (immediately next to us) and were received warmly with lots of offers to make their stay more comfortable and enjoyable. They were offered early access to their room, which upon hearing this our staff member told us “absolutely not.” We returned to reception ten minutes later and asked the other staff member who gave us immediate access to our room. Other circumstances like this arose through the trip where one staff member would be very accommodating but another would be rude and short with us.

Also a note to avoid the staff members in the white polo shirts. They are very pushy about their Executive packages and it became a chore to try and avoid them each day.

The room was decent, but they kept pushing a membership on us the entire time, which ended up wasting a whole day in discussions. They had promised my mom a complimentary spa session just for meeting with them, even if we chose not to sign up. However, once we declined the offer, that promise wasn’t honored.

We have gone to this resort for almost 2 decades, and we are sorry to say that it is now a cheap resort that is catering to a clientele of drunk, rude people who are more interested in getting as drunk as possible and yelling at the staff! It is no longer the beautiful and calm paradise resort, but a spring breaker that is having their first beer and now wants to party! Definitely do not take your families or children to this resort. They advertise it as family friendly, but it is absolutely not! They also advertise it for honeymooners and it is not a place for honeymooners! We experienced everything from broken glass in the food at the buffet to a child pooping in the swimming pool and the staff did nothing about it. They just kept letting everyone continue to swim in the pool while the poop was being swept off to the sidewalk. A large amount of amenities that they still post on their site and include in their promotional materials are no longer at the resort. They have traded in amenities and services for their customers, and now have fancy patio furniture instead. The management also allows the guests to act incredibly rude to not only other guests, but also their staff. The staff is trying to do their job the best they can, but it is obvious that there is no joy left in their work. Expedia should absolutely not rate this as a VIP hotel! There is nothing about the hotel that is VIP.

Stayed here only because our usual resort was under renovation. Giving 2 stars mainly for the staff, who work very hard and deserve tips.

We booked VIP/Privilege through Expedia, but it was unclear what benefits were included, and it didn’t feel worth the upgrade.

The beach is nice, but there is too much shade from palm trees, so you often have to move sunbeds to find sun. Sunbeds are basic and uncomfortable for long use.

Food was disappointing overall: bland, under-seasoned, sometimes cold, with long waits at restaurants. The Steakhouse was the best à la carte option, but if you want medium-rare steak, order it well done. Mexican restaurant was below average, hibachi nothing special, and room service very limited.

Lobby is dark with uncomfortable seating; lobby bathrooms were not clean and had flushing issues. Lukewarm shower water and lack of bathroom ventilation were also problems.

Only one smoking area near the lobby, no chairs, very uncomfortable.

Staff and animation team were the highlight. Unfortunately, the resort itself did not meet expectations.

I think the differences in experience depend on if you are part of their privilege program or not, or what avenue you took to book your vacation. The privileged group had certain foods, beverages, restaurants and even tables that we weren't allowed to access. Their living quarters even looked completely different, and was what I saw more often on their website. The room, although very clean, was in okay condition, cracks in the walks and ceiling, worn out furniture and mirrors, and not really what you see in the photos. The food was very good in the main restaurant, and had better Mexican food than their Mexican restaurant. The staff were very friendly but very few went above and beyond to make sure your needs were met; simple requests like chairs at the beach were met with \"it's not possible\" and there were very few staff working around the pool and beach areas. Interestingly enough, there was not much entertainment throughout the day until the Monday we left, we wondered if it was a way to introduce new guests and then would putter out throughout the week. We have stayed at a few other all-inclusives and although we made the most of our time here, it did not live up to the others, especially within the same price range.

Hotel/Maroma beach is lovely - hotel clears seaweed if it occurs.
Rooms (3319) are a good size but lack views and are in 3 block complexes.
Only 1 large pool but so noisy, not peaceful. Hotel needs an alternative quiet area pool.
All inclusive food / drinks were ok but difficult to book themed restaurants.
This hotel is large so it is catering for the masses unless you upgrade to Privilege or Exclusive grades.
Would not advise for disabled or elderly guests - long walks from rooms to facilities.

The only good thing about the resort is the beach and we had one decent meal at the Steakhouse. The staff is trying their best, but they fail due to lack of resources and extremely poor management.
The whole resort is outdated and smelly. The furniture is old and smelly, straight from the lobby.
The rooms are in very bad condition, mine smelled like mold and sewer the whole time I was there. And so did my friends’ rooms ..and we had 7 rooms. Not one was decent.
The buffet is poorly staffed and they have ridiculous rules where they won’t let you sit with your friends even if the table is big enough, asking to accommodate bigger groups is not even possible

There are only 3 bars, one pool. And the pool is mostly for children

This was not the cheapest of resorts, so if you have the money to spend, go somewhere else!

Management needs to be changed and they need to make some serious investments in infrastructure and facilities

Unable to change our room even though he said they would try the next day .lied and chanced his story so we asked to speak to manager . The room smelled like mold and all they did was spray air freshner . The manger Rogerlio was useless at acknowledging our issues and complaints . We were stuck in the moldy room for 4 nights . Declined to refund us our money to go elsewhere . My sister had health issues and it made her cough non stop . The food was hit and miss . The dinner at Bloved was awful too salty and well done steak was red and raw. Buffet food was hot and miss . . Never go back

This is a very beautiful resort in a lush rainforest setting, but Americans should understand exactly what they’re getting before booking.

Location & Scenery:
The rainforest environment is absolutely stunning and was the biggest positive surprise. The property feels very tropical, with lush greenery everywhere. We saw animals occasionally running around, which added to the experience. For anyone concerned, the animals keep their distance and are not a problem at all.

Pools & Common Areas:
The pool is excellent—large, clean, and well maintained. Some areas are close to 8 feet deep, which is great for adults but something to be aware of if you have small children. Common areas were consistently clean and well cared for.

Housekeeping & Room Comfort:
Housekeeping was excellent and came every day like clockwork. Rooms were cleaned thoroughly and quickly. Beds were comfortable. The AC and ceiling fans worked very well and kept the room cool at all times. Walls are somewhat thin, but noise was manageable overall.

Food & Drinks (Biggest Weakness):
The food is where this resort falls short for Americans.

Rooms was spotless clean. Room in the building #3 was super noisy 8am to 10pm because of a construction nearby. It was hard to stay in the room for relax or work during the daytime. My advice is to bring a spray against insects(mosquitoes), and afterbite medication. Staff is great, helpful and nice, no problem at all.

We have been there two years ago and it was amazing that’s why we decided to go back again. This time was a disaster. Food was below average. It was the same thing every day. Room smelled like sewer no matter if you left AC on or windows open all day/night. The only good thing left on this place was the beach. Definitely not going back to this place anymore.

They are not organized and theres a lack of activities, and food options. Buffet is terrible with little options. Would never recommend this resort to anyone

This is the worst all inclusive I’ve had stayed in. From the day of check in to last day we were unsatisfied. We had to move to three different rooms because of mold smells and room maintenance. They promised they would do something for my daughter’s birthday and never did it! No activities and very limited food. Worst hotel ever.

This was our third time at Playa Maroma. A quiet smallish resort with great food .We love the authentic Mexican vibe and the jungle setting. Lots of wonderful seating areas though our the complex.Great coffee shop. Lots of wild life viewing. Even got to see monkeys this time around.
The only con was the misleading phone call saying that since we were repeat customers they wanted to give us complimentary massages etc. Turns out it was just a pitch for a modern twist on time share type privileges. No complimentary gifts once we turned down the pitch. Not impressed.

The hotels grounds, and many of the service staff are quite nice. That’s where it ends. All of the infrastructure, from the buildings to AC and even plumbing, seems to be failing quite miserably. This place may have been nice 10+ years ago, but i would not recommend coming here now. Front desk staff are not very helpful, you really have to complain and create a bit of a scene to get even a simple thing like for instance the lock on our door fixed, or an option to move rooms when ours would not go below 30 degrees. Our experience wasn’t isolated as we heard story after story about people’s bad experiences.

We had a wonderful week at this resort! Don't pay attention to any bad reviews! Those guests must be crabby!
This resort has a great feel... beautiful lobby, cozy sitting places sprinkled around the resort, manicured spaces, impecably clean throughout. All of the staff were friendly and welcoming. We are beach people and got to know Paola, the server in the privilege section, really well! She was so nice! Emilio, the recently hired beach/pool manager was also the best!
The food was DELISH at each restaurant. The best we've had at all of the resorts we've been to. We made the required reservations at the beginning of our stay for the whole week. Worked out seemlessly.
We would jump at the chance to return to this resort! Highly recommend!!

Great resort in jungle setting but along a very nice beach. Lots of beach loungers around pool and at beach. Never any line ups for buffet restaurant and reservations for other restaurants were easy to book. Food was good and lots of variety at Buffet. Stayed in Privileged category which is in the buildings closer to the pool and beach, and gives exclusive access to a certain area of the beach with lu gets and daybeds (free) and the beachfront Beloved restaurant, which is al la carte for all meals (it was fine but we only ate there once and preferred the Buffet restaurant). The check in desk and main buffet are a fairly long walk away from the pool and beach (about 400 metres with the 6 buildings with rooms along the path) so there can be a lot of walking. Dedicated coffee shop on site was great and had wide assortment of hot and cold drinks and many desserts. Our room was not one of the renovated rooms but it was clean and spacious. The AC unit was fairly loud but kept the room nice and cool at night. Lots of Coatis roaming around and saw one monkey. All staff were very pleasant and attentive. We would stay here again but would book a renovated room next time (they had none available to upgrade to when we stayed).

Very polite, amazing and helpful staff, hardworking people. Very friendly and professional. Place is a little outdated but very clean and well maintained. Small property, but very cozy. Food is great with a lot of healthy options. Great value for the price. My only problem is bed bugs. I have bites all over my legs and arms. I know it’s something hard to get rid of and most likely if one room is infected- all rooms probably as well. Unfortunately, this is the only reason I likely will not return.

Upon arrival, the lobby looked outdated with parts of the roof missing, and the buffet area had a foul odor. Thankfully, the other restaurants were excellent with great food. Our first night was difficult — the room next door had a woman with several children screaming nonstop. I called the front desk twice for help, but no one answered. I eventually went to the door myself, and while the noise briefly quieted, it soon returned. The mom appeared drunk and overwhelmed, and the children were out of control.
Overall, most of the staff were friendly and helpful, but guest services were hesitant to provide smaller bills, which was frustrating since these were meant for tipping their own employees. Scheduling dinner reservations online was also a nightmare — the system doesn’t allow changes, and adjustments require a long walk to guest services.
Another disappointment was the lack of communication about the privilege amenities. At check-in, nothing was mentioned, and I only learned days later about the privilege breakfast and dinner options, which I then missed out on. The free 30-minute massage, however, was excellent and a highlight of the stay.
In summary, while the staff (outside guest services) were wonderful, the specialty restaurants were enjoyable, and the massage was amazing, the outdated facilities, noise issues, poor communication, and frustrating reservation system left a lot to be desired.
