Some of the specialty restaurants were a bummer but the main buffet restaurant Don Julian alone would bring me back. A plethora of options that were different every night we were there. Very friendly and helpful staff.

The pools were a bit small but enough. Hetting drinks was very quick; did not have to wait more than 2 minutes any time.

Lovely property. Access to the other 6 Riu properties in Playacar made it easy to check out other properties and determine which you’d prefer. We preferred ours because the beach area is huge. No need to get up at 6am and snag a chair. Many available even after breakfast. We enjoyed the steakhouse (for the lobster) and the Italian (for the lamb chops and starter salad). Good entertainment and if you want more then go to other Riu property within walking distance. Staff were great. We tip EVERYTIME we get service (20 pesos) and 50 pesos for our housekeeper (per day). It’s not obligatory and we understand that many may not tip. We choose to do so. The only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars is because the non smoking policy is not enforced. We had people on either side of our room smoking day and night on the patio area. If we were outside I would ask them to stop smoking and they did. There are designated smoking area so please use them. Thanks much appreciated.

The room had a lot of damage to the furniture and one of the nights the frame and molding came off the wall. The air conditioner kept leaking making the entrance a hazard when walking in. The worse part was the spa moving my appointment up 3 hours without notification. I booked a service because I went to a wedding celebration and this left me stranded without a hair appointment. At the very least they could’ve told me days before but instead waited until the morning of an hour before the appointment. When I went to go tell the front desk, they pushed off the blame to the spa. I understood that the spa may have been ran by somebody else, but if it’s in their website and in their establishment, they should be held responsible as well because they represent each other. The general manager was very dismissive not rude. He just stayed quiet and didn’t really say anything there was no resolution to the matter.

Location of the property, the beach area is very beautiful. The grounds are well maintained. The staff is very friendly and trying to make your stay personal / Thank you Fabiola and Moe/. Food was delicious. The food and atmosphere from all of the Restaurants on the property the Mexcan /La Bodega/ was above all for me. The property and rooms need mager renovation!!!! Rooms were amazing maybe 10-15 years ago, not now. We had constant problems with the room entry key. In general we had great experience

Clean rooms…staff very friendly as our 3 time back to this hotel. Food is okay but not great…..pool and beach area are excellent for the property. 2 negatives….room card system not good and needs to keep on going to front desk to reset and room plugs for electronics are worn out. Overall would recommend as a good value and the staff make it very enjoyable.

The staff at the resortamazing !! It was a birthday trip and I have never had such an amazing birthday from singing to decorating my room and the attention to detail was excellent! The steakhouse was our favorite steak lobster and shrimp. Also some our group went fishing and they cooked our catch at the steakhouse restaurant on property and it was superb ! The doorman Francisco was or favorite employee there however they were so many awesome employees!

We booked a king size bed with reservations well in advance and we got a room with 2twin size beds pushed together. Who sleeps in the crack? Looks like the strike plate on the door was recently replaced and had to be adjusted a bit because part of the wood on the door trim was broken and missing.. obviously this room was broken into to and the hotel was too cheap to replace the door and surrounding trim. Made us feel all warm and cozy for our 7 night stay. Locking the deadbolt was tricky and we had to lift and move the door to one side to get it to lock. Hotel was full and no changes could be made. The toilet area was separate and smaller than bathroom on a plane. Even my wife who is petite almost hit her knees on the door while sitting on the toilet. It’s that small and tight.. and everything is old. Rooms very outdated. Opening and closing patio door is also a treat.. screen ripped and door is warped. We will not stay there again. Staff was friendly and food was good. Beach was nice. Otherwise this would be 1 star rating at best.

Our stay at Riu Palace Mexico was truly exceptional, and the biggest reason was the outstanding staff and customer service throughout the resort.

From the moment we arrived, every team member was welcoming, attentive, and genuinely kind. The front desk staff made check-in smooth and stress-free, always ready to help with a smile. Housekeeping was impeccable—our room was spotless every day, and small thoughtful touches made us feel truly cared for.

The restaurant and bar staff deserve special recognition. They were professional, friendly, and consistently went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and satisfied. Whether it was remembering our preferences, offering recommendations, or simply making us feel valued, their dedication truly stood out.

What impressed us most was how authentic and personal the service felt. The staff didn’t just do their jobs—they made us feel like guests, not just tourists. That level of hospitality is rare and made our stay memorable.

Riu Palace Mexico is a beautiful resort, but it’s the people who make it exceptional. We would absolutely return and highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for excellent service and a genuinely welcoming experience.

Very Disappointing Stay

We stayed at Riu Palace Mexico, Playa del Carmen, expecting a 5-star all-inclusive experience, but it was extremely disappointing.

Our first room was dirty and poorly maintained — broken bathroom, heavy dust everywhere, and very old, worn furniture. We immediately requested a room change. Even after we paid extra for an upgraded room, we were told we still had to wait 24 hours before being moved.

When we were finally placed in the upgraded room the next day, the situation became even worse. That evening, after returning from dinner and turning on the lights, around 20 cockroaches ran across the room. It was absolutely disgusting. I am attaching photos and videos as proof.

I tried calling the service desk multiple times that night, but no one answered. The next morning, management again told us to wait another 24 hours, which we refused. After several hours, we were moved to a different room. By then, three of our six vacation days were lost.

The front desk staff and management were unhelpful and dismissive. When we asked for compensation, they offered a free massage, which did not address the seriousness of the issue. RIU corporate referred us to Expedia, since we booked through them, and we are still waiting for a response.

The food was mediocre and mostly tasteless, including the Christmas Eve dinner. The beach was nice, but there was no beach service, towels were old and limited to one per person.

We had a great time at Riu Palace! The staff are so welcoming. They work so hard to make your stay great! The grounds are well kept. The room was clean and beds comfortable. The food is amazing!
The buffet has a great variety each day and the food gets replenished often. My kids loved the chocolate fountain. Each day there’s a different type of chocolate in the fountain. I loved the seafood variety. We ate at the steakhouse restaurant onsite and had a delicious lobster. We ate at the Japanese restaurant and liked the food. It’s a first come, first served which worked well. We never had to wait.
There were some fun times at the pool such as the bingo games, foam party and the gymnastics show. Javi is a great server by the pool side. He remembered our names and what we like to drink.
We loved the Riu white party over at Riu Tequila across the road. Early in the evening there’s face painting and balloons.
It cost $10 US taxi to get from the playa del Carmen ferry to the Riu resort. I suggest dealing in pesos.
There is a laundry service available. You have to pay by the item so it can really add up. So we didn’t use it. There’s a lot of laundry to do with a family. Too bad there wasn’t a self serve laundry room or a pay by the bag service.
The beach was great. There’s lots of people swimming in front of the resort. The ocean is warm and has clear turquoise water. The sand is white and fluffy. I didn’t see many shells or fish.
We can’t wait to stay here again!

The priority seems to be weddings. There were three weddings during our stay of three nights. The first two the pool bar (the only seating on the property with a view of the beach) closed early afternoon to accommodate the receptions. The third wedding was later in the day. The reception was held in the middle of the property adjacent to the rooms with an ocean view. The music was very loud, the lighting reminiscent of Ibiza, was permitted until 11pm. The food was sub par compared to the Palace Rivieria Maya. We found ourselves eating there the entire time and sitting on their patio as it didn't seem to close, regardless of whether a wedding was taking place or not. On a positive note the delightful man working the main entrance was an absolute delight!

My husband was hoping to have more authentic Mexican options for breakfast.

We just stayed 7 days at the Palace Mexico. About halfway through I started looking for things I would consider negative. I sincerely have nothing negative to say. The resort is clean, the staff is incredibly nice and helpful. The beach is perfect and the buffets are varied and tasty. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are a good size. We look forward to returning.

I Love this property, it is a shame that it will be remodeled again. The Food Quality has dropped, several of the (Chef’s ????) should not be in view of the customers, no clue what they are doing. Some of the Speciality Dining restaurants get their food from the Buffet Restaurant. There is No or at least POOR quality control on the Buffet

We went during seaweed season(summer) so ocean wasn’t as clean as we would have liked but knew that coming in. I spoke to others who aren’t aware of this. Please know that if you plan on coming during the summer-the beach will have seaweed in playa & Cancun. That being said, the hotel does its best to clean it daily(I was actually expecting it to be way worse). The area on the beach has palm trees, hammocks and the waiters come and bring drinks to you. It’s actually one of the nicest beach areas I’ve been to.
The staff is great especially Patricio, Leo, all the staff at the Mexican restaurant. The staff at the buffet is great as well. Marlene is in charge of the riuland(kids area) and she is awesome. She came up to me as she saw me struggling to inflate a floatie for my kids and asked if she could help.
Some things you should know before you book: this RIU is quiet. If you plan on partying all the time at the hotel- prob not hotel for you. BUT it is directly in front of RIU tequila(cross small street) where they have white party. Also, about 20 mins from town.
Has 6 pools but they’re not huge. If you bring kids they have a small pool but it is geared towards toddlers. My kids are 9 & 12 so they are too big for this area. Wish they had slides and bigger pool for kids like at other hotels. Kids still had fun.
Hotel isn’t so big that you require a cart to get across. You can walk easily to all restaurants. Food is good. Need more entertainment.relaxing place-would come back

I recently stayed at the Riu Palace Mexico in Playa del Carmen with a group of 15, and overall, I enjoyed my experience. The resort grounds are beautiful—well-maintained and relaxing—and the staff was consistently friendly and welcoming throughout our stay.

The buffet was decent, offering a variety of options, though nothing particularly memorable. I didn’t get the chance to try the Italian restaurant, but we did dine at the steakhouse. The food there was just okay, and unfortunately, it took about an hour and a half to get our large party seated, which was frustrating.

As for the accommodations, our rooms felt a bit outdated. The bathrooms were very small, and one of the biggest annoyances was the lack of functional electrical outlets—it was a challenge charging devices at night.

Despite a few inconveniences, the overall vibe and friendly service made for a good stay. I’d recommend the resort with a few caveats, especially if traveling with a large group or needing modern room features.

I’ve stayed at the Riu in Cabo, and that property is much more updated than this location. The rooms are so old and outdated and looks like they just slapped a coat of paint on the walls. The restaurants are not good at all. The Buffett is much better, but needs more options for those who don’t eat beef or pork. My daughter encounter a battle of stomach sickness on our last day after eating a burger from the restaurant near the pools. Too many insects over the foods and some of the items seemed old. The entertainment is mediocre, and can’t definitely be improved. Gustavo, was amazing for the work outs and just his overall personality. I expected a little more.

We enjoyed almost everything about our week long stay at the Riu Palace Mexico. Excellent food and amenities, beautiful beachfront with hundreds of beach lounges. There were tons of sargassum along the shore but that has been an issue for years in Playa del Carmen for years.
The only real complaint I have is the size of the toilet area. I am 6'2\" and it's very uncomfortable to use.
Would I return to Riu Palace for another stay? Yes. All in all we had a wonderful time.

Nice property. Good service inside the hotel except the beach (just a couple of waiters and took a while to see them come back).

Beach is awesome, one of the widest beachfront areas with at least 100ft (30m) . Unfortunately seaweeds were terrible during our stay, affecting all resorts.

Food is decent for an all inclusive. The specialty restaurants are a bit too small and not too upscale, could get the same or similar food in the daily dinner buffet.

Night shows were nice, good dancers and singers. During the day not too many activities for teenagers and kids though, this property definitely falls short on that one.

Regarding room cleaning service it was outstanding with plenty of clean towels everyday!

Enjoyed my time in the hotel but I don’t think I would come back. Recommendable for couples looking for a relaxed environment, specially +55 yrs old.

When we arrived and got the room it smelled moldy and we spoke with a person at the hotel about it and we had two people come and one sprayed a scent and a maintenance to look at the ac unit and after couple days more it started again to smell I’m not one to complain but we could smell the mold and the food a lot of it was under cooked and need to improve on the food and have more authentic Mexican with taste and have some one make tortilla by hand it make things a lot better I was disappointed with food options breakfast was very good and lunch and dinner was not pleasant and the staff and service we had server by the pool he was very polite and friendly and our server for breakfast one lady she was very nice I can’t remember their names and you had some other people that just weren’t friendly at all and especially scuba carbie they will sell you whatever they want for trips and not care to speak to you again and ask about your experience the sales would not even look at us after we came back and the day later why would you have a company like that on your property it’s not customer friendly I have been going RIU for some years now Cancun, Cabo and now Playa del Carmen it’s left a bad impression on me I’m considering using another hotel but I will give another chance when we come back I hope things can change for my next visit

I've been to this property in two separate occasions in 2019 and 2022. The property has changed a lot. Everything is beautiful, but when you look at certain things again, like fans just to give a simple example, you can tell they haven't cleaned them in years.

The major problem at this Riu is the food. It is inedible. The food was so bad that my family including my kid had food poisoning which basically ruined the entired vacation.

The amenities are great, but if you can't trust the all-inclusive food and it will actually make you sick, then it doesn't matter how beautiful or how nice the administrators of this hotel are to you. They should have given us a return of our money given that that thanks to their awful food we weren't able to enjoy our stay.

I hope they can go back to how they were in terms of food. You can also tell some of the pools were dated and required attention.
