- very poor customer service from reception
- building #1 he’s extremely noisy with blaring music from the entertainment until 11 PM. After that, you hear everyone walking up the stairs talking throughout the night. Couldn’t sleep all night. Should have been warned by reception about this.
- this will hotel would not accommodate a late checkout
- deserts in coffee shop were horrible. One of the worst was the cheesecake in a red cupcake liner. The red cupcake liner died the cheesecake red. Hazardous to health.
- very difficult to get restaurant reservations. Could not try all restaurants.
- biggest downfall: there there’s a lot of seaweed on the beach and in the water. Could not enjoy the beach on this vacation. The beach is not frequently cleaned.
- reception staff was not apologetic about any complaints. I mentioned I would include this in my review and they didn’t care.
- some restaurants servers ask you to leave a positive Google review and wait for you until you do it, leading to a high Google rating for this hotel even if it is not deserved

Traveler beware: if you book a Privilege suite at Catalonia Gran Costa Mujeres, confirm what you’re getting. We paid for an upgraded room with a separate bedroom and living area, but were given a standard room facing the noisy main pool. When we questioned it, staff initially denied such rooms even existed instead of owning their mistake. Only after showing proof of our booking did they finally move us to the correct room in a quieter area.
The resort itself is clean and pleasant, but service is inconsistent and communication poor. We tried to coordinate nearby rooms with friends arriving later and kept being told to “check back,” only to be offered an upgrade for an extra $600. Food was very average, and my husband ended up with food poisoning on the last day. The beach is lovely, but by 8 a.m., most shaded chairs are “reserved” despite rules against it.
The kids’ club is also misleading—hours are limited, and only ten kids can attend unattended at once, which makes little sense for a family resort. Even the coffee shop, though a nice touch, involved 30–45 minute waits each morning.
While some staff were friendly, the overall lack of accountability and inconsistent service made the experience fall short for the price. Glad they fixed our room issue, but we don’t see ourselves booking another stay.

Great size rooms and one of the cleanliness resorts I've been too. The shows are amazing if your kids can stay up until 10 please make sure you check out the shows. Drinks at the lobby bar are top notch. Everywhere else drinks are 4 star. Food is also 4 star. Tbh we ended up going to the buffet after every restaurant. Buffet was by far the best food in the resort. Beach is beautiful!!! Pools are super cold if it's overcast and cloudy you can't swim.

The room hand a bad smell the moment I walked in. We complained about it they did nothing. Then at the end of the night first day of travel mind you, oh and I had babies with me as well.. The room had a roach our first day!! I got footage. We didn’t get compensated at all! All I heard was it’s a nature place. There’s nature then there’s down right dirty!!! Roaches come from bad sewage and bad hygiene. The room was on the first floor and it was the family Suite… next day I got a knew the next day after an argument! It was clean and okay. Service is horrible I can count on my hand the best servers was mainly Gabriel, and a few ppl on the beach, the entertainment Fabrico, David and the two girls where so excellent at entertaining.. the food wasn’t all the that. Not 5 star resort. Some staff great some just like to say 'no'. Our Room had flies and ants in the bathroom sinks, reported multiple times and could not change rooms. Elevators were broken several days and we had stroller we had to carry to 4th floor, again, was told no to changing rooms. Aggressively try to upsell you everything once there. No staff on beach. Requested partial refund from hotel through hotels.com and was denied. Absolutely not a 5 star resort. 3.5 star at best. Oh and BLoved restaurant is only for their privilege members so not sure why it's advertised.

From bad service to rude staff, stay was beautiful, facilities were outstanding however we had issues with staff/service. We couldn’t get reservations to their Japanese restaurant all 5 days booked. When made reservations at other restaurants only availability was after 9pm only for staff to hurry us up because the kitchen was closing. Room service was never delivered, couldn’t use their gym facilities because gym shoes were not worn. Saw people being kicked out of their buffet because they had swim wear on yet other guests had on swim clothes. Did not like the service at all. Definitely would not go back.

Beautiful clean rooms, great beach for swimming, always plenty of chairs, great food options. Activities on the beach and pool side, David - maker of happiness, made our trip so fun. We were in building 1 and loved being next to the activity pool. Can't say enough good things about Catalonia.

Overall, this was a great stay and we would happily return.
Pros:
Staff: 99% of the staff was attentive and professional. Exceptional service overall.
Dining: Buffet breakfast and dinner were great. Wide variety and high quality.
Entertainment: Great entertainment and activities kept the trip lively.
Cons/Only Fail:
Lunch: Buffet lunch quality was disappointing compared to breakfast and dinner.
Reservation System: The dinner reservation system was a major dissatisfier for our group. It was difficult and frustrating.
Resolution:
The Front Desk was able to help us navigate the reservation issue successfully.
The service and amenities were excellent enough to outweigh the frustration.

They did try to promote a club membership which was promoted as a quick 90min breakfast and non pushy presentation. It ended up being a pushy 2.5 hour presentation in which you can tell how the manager got upset when we continued to kindly decline.

As a family of 6 the room had no privacy to change or get dressed. 2 queen beds super uncomfortable to sleep on and I don’t think a fold out should equate to a bed especially for my teenagers. The bathrooms were worn and could use a good clean. The restaurants were good but making a reservation was hard and only had openings after 9:30. The check in process was hectic! Crowded and took forever. The drinks are not strong at all. We paid for an upgrade and were contacted the next day that a room was wasn’t available. We were offered dinner reservations at earlier times for the inconvenience when we showed up to the restaurants they had no idea what we were talking about- we had a text from the manager. Guest services helped us eventually. The shows were good but progressively became inappropriate for kids. We walked out of the ‘The Rock Show’ because it was bordering a strip show other families left as well. The food trucks, tacos, ceviche, crepes and cafe were really great! The pools were great! The beach was good could’ve used more shade areas and lounge chairs. The service by the pool was great- workers were very hospitable and nice! Workers asking to take photos was annoying!! I agreed to taking some with my daughter and thought maybe max 5 poses but they kept insisting on more poses - it was awkward. And when they’d come back around they didn’t take ‘no’ for an answer and that’s what made it annoying. Take mosquito spray!!! It was an okay stay.

Almost everything was excellent. The room was awesome, the staff were excellent and friendly, food was mostly really good, medical service and follow up was excellent. My only complaint was some of the follow up was not done, ie we were told there woul be something in our room for our anniversary and our sister’s birthday, as well as dessert with a candle for her birthday but none of those things happened. Those are minor things though. We’ll be back!

My experience at this hotel was extremely disappointing. From the moment we arrived, everything was disorganized. We did not receive the welcome drink, we had to wait a long time, and no one accompanied us or even showed us where our room was. To make it worse, it was raining and all they did was hand us an umbrella with no assistance or guidance.

The hotel itself is poorly maintained. There are areas with unfinished details, viewing points with broken glass that have not been repaired, and cups thrown around the hallways. It reflects a lack of cleanliness and attention to safety. Overall, the service from the staff was consistently poor.

The food was another huge disappointment. They advertise 16 restaurants, but we were never able to eat at any of them because everything was always “full,” and no one made the slightest effort to help with reservations or offer alternatives. The food options we did see were basic, lacking identity, and nothing like what the hotel promotes.

Entertainment was also a letdown. Their entertainment team does not provide information or engage with guests, and you rarely see anyone sharing updates or leading activities.
Service at the beach and the pool was terrible—slow, inattentive, and clearly understaffed. On top of that, some of the external restrooms were not clean, which is unacceptable for a resort at this level.

The drinks are not what is expected(the quality of the brands and cocktails )for an all inclusive even paying for the privilege bracelet also the food was not the best
Early check in paying not possible even with the rooms ready we were waiting for more than 3 hours with babies and no help until we complained after 3pm check in time
One of the access to the beach (the main) is very slippery with the sand and the material (plastic) use for the walk from our group my mom suffered a fall resulting in a fracture on the hand.

The room on the first day smelled horrible because it was freshly painted with oil based paint. The hotel was only at 40% occupancy but our room was not ready at 3pm. After running the AC in the room, it started to smell musty or mildew. When you opened the room door from the hall, the smell would hit you. Both my husband and I got sick. The buffet is extremely lack luster. This is the first resort in the area where I have been where the servers and bartenders do not know English. I understand we were in Mexico but usually the service staff is able to speak English so it made dining and ordering drinks difficult. The bartenders at the swim up bar lacked personality. It almost seemed like you were causing them an inconvenience by asking them for a drink. We were just at the Finest Costa Mujeres in May and I would gladly spend the extra money the next time to avoid the Catalonia. The money saved was not worth the terrible food and service.

I’ve visited Cancun several times and always had great experiences, but unfortunately, this stay was very disappointing from the moment we arrived.
The staff was not welcoming or helpful, and the overall attitude felt indifferent at best. We were a group of 20 people, and it felt like we were just an inconvenience rather than guests.
The food was by far the worst part — the buffet was extremely limited, repetitive, and poorly maintained. On Saturday evening, there was almost nothing left by dinner time, and several members of my family didn’t get to eat. For an all-inclusive resort, this was completely unacceptable. The à la carte restaurant was also unimpressive and lacked variety.
Drinks were just okay, but the beer was consistently warm. As for the smoking policy, when booked this resort it mentioned having a smoking area. However, smokers in our group were forced to leave the resort entirely to smoke, and the staff was unnecessarily rude about it. Overall, this was a frustrating and disappointing experience. I’ve stayed at other all-inclusives in Cancun that offered much better service, food, and hospitality. We couldn’t wait for the trip to end, which is a shame because we were looking forward to a relaxing getaway. Would not return, and I do not recommend it.

The stay was amazing. The room we picked was privileged and it gave us access to a separate dining room, beach beds and bars. The restaurant options were good, I wish there was more options for dinner. We loved the italian and the steakhouse. The spa was also amazing and we were gifted a free couple massage in our package. The hotel is very organized, staff is friendly and helpful at all the time. The room service is available 27/7 but I wish they had more options of food. The pool in our room was dirty and it had so much bugs and iguana poop. There’s iguanas everywhere so don’t be scared, we had one in our pool every day. Upon arrival we also got a bowl of fruits and champagne and chocolate. There’s bars everywhere too and the drinks are good! They serve you at the beach as well, and there’s like 2 bars and a juice bar which was really fresh and good.
I recommend people looking for transportation because the hotel is 45 minutes from the airport, and they dont offer shuttle, but the uber is cheap and the hotel is very secure while letting people in or out.
I would book this hotel again.

Overall my family & I had a great time at Catalonia. The grounds are beautiful, pools are very nice, and the hotel overall is aesthetically beautiful.

Rooms for improvement include: possible bottled water in rooms instead of a refillable glass water container — I think the water was bothering my husband’s stomach. Also, a “less sweet” mix for the drinks.

I also requested room service that never arrived. My request was simply completed out with no communication on why.

The property is pretty and well manicured. It has good food options if you can get a reservation, although I feel like it has too many Asian restaurants. I liked how the property looked very clean and new. Pool was fun but water was a bit too warm. Encountered staff that was very nice and seem to care about their job and customer service but those sore thumbs stood out by doing the opposite. If I can remember her name, Leonarda, a manager from one of the restaurants during our stay was terrible. She was at the Ayami Japanese Teppenyaki restaurant. She was rude and would speak to waiters without any concern of customers being present. Would make hand gestures like cutting her throat meaning she wanted people out of the restaurant because it was nearing closing time. An employee at the entrance was very rude. We called front desk to have someone help us out with our luggage upon check out time and after waiting over 30 minutes we decided to just walk to the lobby. Note, it was at least a 7 minute walk and elevators were not working in our building. We were on the 3rd floor. Upon entering the lobby, an employee at the front door made their way and approached us offering to help us with our luggage when in all reality we were 20-30 steps from the front main door where our transportation would pick us up. I told him, \"you should've helped us from our room to here, rather than just the last 20 steps.\" He answered rudely, \"I don't read minds, you should've called for service.\" I answered, \"I did call and waited over 30 minutes,\" he did not even apologize and just walked away. Terrible experience.

Horrible dining service.
Restaurants have no AC.
Grand caribe which is the main restaurant has a long line to get inside every day. As a customer we waited for about 20-30 minutes outside ( 90 Fahrenheit feels like 105) grand caribe food was ok but the line was not acceptable. Can you believe it ? You paid 350$ for 1 night and you wait on the line to eat . You decide not to go to that restaurant and you try the other restaurants. For example Mexican, no AC no fan. You try another one, steak house. There’s no AC. You sweat and eat. I have never seen something like this.
The best thing was the entertainment at the theater, they were very succcessful. We didn’t miss the shows at 9 pm every night.
Also the lady who was serving at the beach was great. She was smiling all the time and asking if we want something to drink. Perfect service At the beach bar.
I don’t recommend this hotel,

22 of my family members stayed for a week and it was wonderful! We had the best time. All of the staff was absolutely amazing and so kind! We went to all of the night shows and enjoyed every one! The dancers are all so talented and we got pictures with them every night! Definitely recommend staying here! Thank you for the best service and hospitality!!!

Unreliable and Unprofessional - My Reservation Was Canceled Without Notice

I’m extremely disappointed with my experience at this hotel. I booked my room well in advance and received confirmation, but when I arrived, I was told that my reservation was canceled without notifying me. No call. No email. Nothing.

The front desk staff offered no real apology or solution. When I asked to speak to the hotel manager I was told that there was no manager on duty and only the front desk manager could help me. After an hour of stopping everyone who looked like they worked there the hotel manager appeared and offered me a less than desirable option which refused until they offered me something better.

I chose this hotel based on location and decent past reviews, but clearly they have major issues with their booking system and customer service. I would not trust them again for any future stay. If you need reliability and basic courtesy, look elsewhere.

I was amazed by the beauty of this hotel. What truly made my experience unforgettable was the incredible Entertainment Team. A special thank you to Raji, Diego, Jhovanny, Fabricio, and Alan. Each of them brought so much energy, kindness, and so many smiles to my days there. They all went above and beyond to make every moment fun and memorable. Whether it was beach games, poolside activities, or evening shows, they made me feel like I was part of the Catalonia family.

Nice resort. It’s very clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful. We were disappointed that there’s not a lot to do besides the pools. They do have a kids club and a teen center but the hours are short and the teen center gets tons of activity but isn’t open all the time either. I don't understand why they wouldn't enlarge the teen center, (everyone goes there not just teens), it wouldn’t cost very much, they seem to have plenty of space and they are saving tons because I didn't see any heavy drinking going on like the other all inclusives I’ve been to.
They do have nightly shows and they were entertaining.
